MEDIA ADVISORY

KDE Commissioner Jason E. Glass to read at Summer Boost program in Bullitt County on June 15

Who:

  • Jason E. Glass, Commissioner of Education and Chief Learner, Kentucky Department of Education (KDE)
  • Toni Konz Tatman, Chief Communications Officer, KDE
  • Cathy Gallagher, KDE summer food service partner

What:

The Summer Boost: Reading and Mathematics Program is a partnership between KDE, the Summer Food Service Program and the Children’s Reading Foundation.

The program promotes family engagement in reading and math by giving away free books and fun items – such as wristbands, bookmarks and magnets – intended to motivate and remind families to read at least 20 minutes every day.

Education Commissioner Jason E. Glass will join two summer boost sessions in Bullitt County on June 15 as a guest reader.

Children may lose up to three months of literacy and numeracy skills during summer break when they are not given an opportunity to practice what they learned during the school year. While it is always important to keep children and students engaged in summer reading and mathematics, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought more visibility to the need for accelerated learning.

All Kentucky families can visit the Summer Support webpages for more information and resources to encourage students and families to make learning a part of daily summer routines in communities across Kentucky.

When:

There will be two separate reading sessions taking place on Wednesday, June 15 between 12 and 1:30 p.m. ET.

Where:

Session one: Hillview Community Center, 298 Prairie Drive, Louisville 40229, from 12 to 12:20 p.m. ET.

Session two: Northside Apartments, 260 Northside Avenue, Shepherdsville 40165, Tables near building 336, from 1:10 to 1:30 p.m. ET.
