Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Sept. 1

In a vote that ended Sept. 1, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Aug. 27.

Fall winners will receive certificates through the athletic departments about midway through the season. The remaining certificates will be mailed at the end of the season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners for the first ballot of the 2023-2024 high school sports season.

Ohio football team: Sycamore – The Aviators entered Friday with a 12-game losing streak, which was snapped with a 24-21 win at Fairfield.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team: Newport – Newport took down Holmes 48-6, getting the first win over Holmes since 2019.

Boys fall team: Bethel-Tate soccer – Bethel-Tate improved to 3-0 with the 4-0 win at Williamsburg on Aug. 24. All three victories on the season have been by shutout.

Girls fall team: Conner soccer – Conner picked up five more wins, including three in the Smoky Mountain Cup in Tennessee, to improve to 9-1-1 on the season.

Ohio boys cross country: Brayden Dill, Western Brown – He won the Wilmington Invitational in 17:37.90 and was one of four Broncos in the top 10.

Ohio girls cross country: Samantha Erbach, Waynesville – She opened her cross-country season by winning the Northmont Invitational in a time of 18:33.31.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross-country: Tiger Bartlett, Ryle – The senior won the boys varsity blue race at the Moeller Primetime Invitational in a time of 15:44.60.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross-country: Abigail Carnes, Notre Dame – The freshman opened her high school career with an eighth-place finish in 21:35.10 at the Grant County Invitational.

Ohio big-school football: Lukas Roddy, Lebanon – He had six catches for 133 yards and a touchdown in Lebanon’s 34-29 loss to Milford.

Ohio small-school football: Brady Young, New Richmond – He threw for 393 yards and six touchdowns in the Lions’ 54-39 loss to Williamsburg.

Northern Kentucky football: Isaiah Johnson, Cooper – He caught seven passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Henry Clay.

Field hockey: Madden Phelps, Indian Hill ‒ The midfielder/team captain always puts in hard work and encourages her teammates to always play their best. She leads by example as she works hard to make sure her whole team stays connected- to continue to keep strong by encouraging communication and support on and off the field. Her defense helped Indian Hill preserve a shutout in the 1-0 win over Oakwood last week.

Boys golf: Nicholas Colwell, West Clermont – Colwell was the match medalist with a 38 as West Clermont edged McNicholas 167-168.

Girls golf: Jayden Ramler, Boone County – The freshman shot a 40 at Boone Links to earn medalist against Newport Central Catholic.

Ohio big-school boys soccer: Brayden Pierson, Lebanon – He posted seven saves in a 1-0 shutout win over Milford to open ECC play.

Ohio small-school boys soccer: Drew Adams, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy – He had three goals and contributed two assists in a 9-2 win over Goshen which was the Eagles’ first win of the season.

Ohio big-school girls soccer: Peyton Smith, Milford – The senior had two goals apiece in wins over Sycamore and Beavercreek after getting an assist in Milford’s 5-2 win over Lebanon in their ECC league opener.

Ohio small-school girls soccer: Cameron Souders, Taylor – The senior scored two goals in the Yellowjackets’ 4-0 win over Talawanda which was their second win in as many games.

Northern Kentucky boys soccer: David Courtney, Boone County – He had four saves in a shutout win for the Rebels, 1-0 over St. Henry, the Rebels’ second win over the Crusaders in three seasons.

Northern Kentucky girls soccer: Ally Welch, Conner – She leads all of Kentucky with six shutouts in the first rankings released by the KHSAA on Aug. 28.

Girls singles tennis player: Lucy Glassmeyer, Mariemont – She is off to a 6-1 start for the Warriors in second singles.

Girls doubles tennis team: Mannat Patel/Tessa Sangermano, Anderson – They won a tight decision (6-3, 6-3) over Kings during a 3-2 match win by the Raptors, the team’s only ECC win this season.

Ohio big-school volleyball: Mya White, Lebanon – She posted two double-doubles with 17 kills and 14 digs against Milford, and 23 kills and 19 digs against Anderson.

Ohio small-school volleyball: Grace Louden, Deer Park – She had 13 aces and 11 digs in a win over New Miami.

Northern Kentucky volleyball: Lily Hamburg, Conner – The senior complied 40 kills, 16 blocks and five aces as the Cougars went 4-1 at the Thoroughbred Smash in Lafayette.

Boys water polo: Ernie Manders, Walnut Hills – He scored five goals and two assists in two losses last week to Mason (19-7) and Princeton (15-6). He also had 12 drawn ejections.

Girls water polo: Janessa Hopkins, Milford – She had five goals and four steals in action over the weekend at the Napoleon Invitational.
