HRPS News & Updates

Dear HRPS Members,

Welcome to the June edition of the newsletter.  We've got a lot of events to tell you about this month, featuring the return of our in-person Walking Tours!

Due to sidewalk reconstruction in the area, we've had to change the date of our first tour - Bricks & Stones, formerly on Saturday, June 4.  The tour has been moved to Saturday, August 6, and everyone who registered for that tour by May 26 will have received an e-mail with the new date.  If you are registered, there is nothing you need to do except change the date in your calendar.

The Bricks & Stones tour is already filled to capacity, but we've got 16 others that are sure to engage you and expand your knowledge of area history.  See below for more details.

Last month we said goodbye to long time HRPS President, Carol Coleman, having completed two 3-year terms on the board.  However, she's not going anywhere; she will still be around as Immediate Past President and will continue working behind the scenes in many capacities.

We also bid goodbye to Sharon Honig-Bear who just completed her second set of 3-year terms on the board and who also promises to remain involved.  HRPS strength comes from its many dedicated longtime volunteers.  Thank you both!

Meanwhile, I am serving as Interim President until we can find someone to accept the position of President.  I just assumed the position of Chair of the City of Reno Historical Resources Commission, and cannot adequately do both jobs, so I'm hoping one of you will consider stepping up and taking on this role.  We have a great board, an administrative support person, and many resources to assist you!  Please contact me if you're interested or would like to recommend someone - paris652@nvbell.net.

HRPS Walking Tours

We are so excited to bring back in-person walking tours!  Registration for all tours is online and Free for HRPS Members, $10 for non-members.  If you see two or more walks you like, think about joining HRPS and you can attend as many as you like at no additional cost.  Individual membership is just $25/year.

Walks are conducted on Tuesday evenings at 6:00pm and Saturday mornings at 9:00am and last 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

We are limiting attendance on most tours to 25 people.  Attendees are free to wear masks if they choose, but masks will not be required.  However, that could change if state guidelines change.

Sunscreen, a hat, water, and comfortable walking shoes are all you'll need.  No dogs allowed; strollers not advised due to narrow, uneven, sidewalks or sometimes no sidewalks at all in certain parts of town.

7 Women Advocating & Working for Historic Trades

Victoria Olivier, Amy Elliott Bragg, and Emilie Evans, the three founders of Brick + Beam Detroit

The Summer 2019 issue of Preservation magazine featured eight women engaged and working in the field of hands-on preservation—also sometimes referred to as historic or preservation trades. Each profile shared the stories and journeys of remarkable artisans and advocates, whose work is integral to the protection and preservation of historic spaces across the country.

In this story, we’re spotlighting seven more women who are advocating and working for preservation trades. Their experiences as women in this field are wide and varied; they are carpenters, painters, trainers, program managers, and long-time advocates for the value and importance of preservation trades. In a field normally dominated by men, they are also a part of the broader story the National Trust is trying to share through our program Where Women Made History.
