Kucinich third in MoveOn poll, behind Obama, Edwards

Dennis Kucinich's anti-Iraq war platform impressed enough members of the Democratic-leaning political group MoveOn.org this week for the Cleveland congressman to finish third in the organization's presidential straw poll, behind Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards

Here are the results:

Obama: 27.87%
Edwards: 24.84%
Kucinich: 17.18%
Richardson: 12.26%
Clinton: 10.70%
Biden: 6.19%
Dodd: 1.05%

MoveOn spokesman Alex Howe said that 42,882 of the group's members selected the candidate they preferred after each one spoke about Iraq during an online forum on Tuesday night. The group is planning to conduct forums on health care and energy/environmental issues this summer, and conduct straw polls afterward.

Howe said the straw poll wasn't "a random sampling and thus not scientific in that sense." Still, the results among a hardcore group of Democratic activists are a boost for Kucinich, who has been an also-ran in other polls, and a setback for early frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

Kucinich campaign manager David Bright referred questions on the poll results to Kucinich himself, who is campaigning in Iowa today. The candidate could not immediately be reached for comment.

UPDATE: Kucinich said through a spokeswoman that his MoveOn showing demonstrates grassroots support for his campaign.

"Just think what will happen when I start getting the coverage the other candidates have gotten," Kucinich said.
