The Miami Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society (FES) welcomes Jose Gomez, P.E., Director of Public works at City of Miami Beach, as guest speaker for our upcoming Monthly Luncheon.

About our speaker:

Joe Gomez brings over 44 years of experience in all facets of infrastructure, including planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance. During his career he has worked in private land development, for the Florida Department of Transportation, as a consultant and most recently for the City of Miami Beach in public works.

Joe is a proud alumnus of Miami-Dade College and Florida International University. He has been a registered professional engineer since 1985 and holds certifications in Advance Maintenance of Traffic, Florida DEP Stormwater Inspector and FDOT QC Manager. He served as Adjunct
Professor at the University of Miami for the Fall/Spring 2020/21 School Year and is a member of the University’s CAE Industry Board.

Joe has been the recipient of numerous awards including:
The prestigious Jay W. Brown Award for Outstanding Leadership and Managerial Abilities (FDOT)
Outstanding Mentor Award to the PE Trainees (FDOT)
I Am MDC Outstanding Alumni (Miami-Dade College)
Certificate of Appreciation, Chair of the Jackson Health System Citizens Advisory- MiamiDade County, Board of County Commissioners
FES Engineer of the Year, Miami Chapter- 2017
FES State Fellow - 2019.

He has been a member of FES since 1996 and has served as Chapter President, State Chapter Director and currently serves as Region 7 Vice President and Chair of the State Scholarship Committee.

On July 28, 2021, Joe was unanimously confirmed by the City Commission as the Director of Public Works for the City of Miami Beach, Florida. He is responsible for the third largest Department in the City with over 360 employees in four divisions with a total capital and operating budget of approximately $600M.

Joe was born in Santo Suarez, La Habana, Cuba and has been a resident of SFL since 1961. He is the proud father of Gisselle, Melissa, Alfred and Nancy and lives in downtown Coral Gables with his wife Maggie and their two dogs, Sammy, and Ms. Lily.
