1. Resilient Wind
- As part of the Biden-Harris administration’s goal of deploying 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy by 2030, offshore wind development on the East Coast is moving forward. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland stated that “offshore wind presents solutions for addressing climate change with a clean, reliable, domestic energy resource while providing good-paying jobs.” This session provides an update on these exciting offshore wind projects and future opportunities for the A/E community.
2. Resilient Water
- Climate change presents a challenge to our local cities in providing safe and resilient infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and recovery. Flood mitigation measures are being explored which are generally supported by residents but funding is a constraint. As shown by Old Dominion University’s Dragas Center of Economic Analysis and Policy and Institute for Coastal Adaptation & Research study for the City of Virginia Beach, the cost of doing nothing is staggering. Findings of the study showed that without additional flood mitigation projects, annualized losses from flooding are projected to grow from about $75 million to $350 million by 2060. This session showcases economic impacts, resiliency initiatives of Hampton Roads cities, and emergency management preparedness and recovery strategies. Next steps and future projects showcase potential contractor support needs.
3. Resilient Military - Mission Assurance
- Understanding and considering climate change in military planning and project implementation is key to maintaining the military mission. This requires integrating environmental and operational sustainability efforts and mitigating impacts from sea level rise and extreme weather events that are occurring at an increasing rate. This session highlights climate change adaptation and resilience projects conducted by DoD in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast with the goal to become more resilient.
