PS5 India Sales: Import Data Suggests Sony Brought Fewer than 4,000 Consoles

Fewer than 4,000 PS5 consoles were imported to India in December 2020 according to recently revealed data directly from the Indian Department of Commerce. As per a Twitter account that tracks PS5 India news, this would mean that if you assume even an import valuation of Rs. 32,000 per PS5 (before duties and taxes) and even if all of the consoles imported in the month of December were PS5s, not more than around 3,900 units made it to the country.

Sources in the supply chain speaking to IGN India state that the PS5 India launch quantity is in the range of 4,000 to 5,000 units at best. This puts it squarely in line with the PS4’s launch quantity of 4,500 in 2014. Although the PS4 sold out in two weeks across online and offline retail, it’s safe to say that the PS5 would have probably sold out both online and offline when pre-orders began on January 12 before the PS5 India release date of February 2.

And while Sony has not said how many PS5s would be available in India at launch those familiar with the company’s plans tell us 12,000 to 15,000 units would have been ideal for an all-India launch across all cities.

This recently revealed information suggests that Sony’s numbers may have been a lot lower. We have reached out to Sony for comment and will update the story if we hear from the company.
