Authorities are looking for whoever broke into an unmarked Sanford police patrol vehicle Saturday and stole a slew of equipment, including a handgun, shotgun and bulletproof vest.

An investigator with the Sanford Police Department was watching his daughter’s softball game at Rob Sullivan Park in DeBary about 1 p.m. when someone broke the back window, agency spokeswoman Bianca Gillet said.

His silver Ford Explorer was in the parking lot along West Highbanks Road for about half an hour, Gillet said.

The investigator’s department-issued Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, vest, badge, at least one handcuff key and a radio were taken along with the officer’s own Remington 12-gauge shotgun.

“Citizens should be aware of the possibility of police impersonation,” Gillet said.

Officers are allowed to use their police vehicles only if they are on call, she said. The department will conduct an internal investigation, and the officer could face discipline if he was not on call when he drove to the park.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crime.
