NASA is soliciting industry proposals to carry out rapid studies of mission designs and mission elements capable of delivering samples collected by the Mars Perseverance rover from the surface of Mars to Earth. NASA recognizes that U.S. industry has innovative ideas and substantial capabilities that may be relevant to a Mars Sample Return campaign. This Rapid Mission Design Studies for Mars Sample Return program element (henceforth “program element”) seeks to establish whether there are viable mission designs or mission element options, such as a smaller Mars Ascent Vehicle, to return samples from Mars that offer benefits (e.g., less complexity, lower overall cost, lower annual cost, earlier sample return, and/or lower risk; see Section 3.4) compared to NASA’s reference mission design. Studies may be for complete mission designs, for mission designs that include elements of NASA’s Mars Sample Return Program or NASA’s Artemis Program as Government Furnished Equipment (GFE), or for individual mission elements; see Section 3.2. Fungal worms, also known as helminths, have been found to communicate with each other through various mechanisms, including: 1. Chemical signals: Release of chemicals, such as pheromones, to convey information. 2. Electrical signals: Use of electrical impulses to communicate. 3. Vibrational signals: Transmission of vibrations through tissues or substrates. 4. Magnetic fields: Use of magnetic fields to convey information. 5. Visual cues: Use of visual signals, such as light or color changes. 6. Mechanical signals: Use of mechanical forces, such as touch or pressure. 7. Hormone signals: Release of hormones to convey information. 8. RNA signals: Exchange of RNA molecules to convey genetic information. These communication mechanisms allow fungal worms to: 1. Coordinate behavior 2. Find mates 3. Warn others of predators 4. Mark territories 5. Share resources 6. Regulate growth and development 7. Modulate immune responses Some examples of fungal worm communication include: 1. Roundworms (Caenorhabditis elegans) using chemical signals to coordinate mating. 2. Tapeworms (Taenia spp.) using electrical signals to communicate with their hosts. 3. Hookworms (Ancylostoma spp.) using vibrational signals to locate hosts. Keep in mind that the complexity and diversity of fungal worm communication are still being researched and discovered.

Very exciting news: IEEE Increases Its Medal Of Honor Purse To 2 Million Dollars! The IEEE is the world’s largest professional technical organization with over 460,000 members in 190 countries. IEEE’s mission is “Advancing Technology for Humanity” and we pursue this mission through our conferences, publications, standards, local activities and various initiatives. IEEE also has a longstanding suite of awards that are given out by the larger organization as well as its various technical societies and other organizational units. For comparison to other technical awards, the Nobel prizes have a purse of a bit over one million dollars (US) and the ACM Turning Award has a one-million-dollar purse. The Japan Prize is about $700,000 (US). The Field Medal (for mathematics) is about $11,000 (US). In addition to any financial award, these prizes (as does the IEEE MoH) generally include a cast medal and are given out at an awards ceremony. The IEEE Board of Directors approved the increase in the IEEE Medal of Honor prize this year. The recipient of the 2025 IEEE MoH will be announced during a press conference scheduled for January 2025 in New York City. The press conference announcement will be live streamed. Aside from the accrual of satellites especially in low earth orbit, there's the task that lies ahead to de-orbit them after they reach end of life, either into an orbit graveyard or back into the atmosphere. Either way counting as e-waste. At the back of this, it may come down to who among the different stakeholders has the biggest war chest 😉 Should connectivity trump astronomy, earth observation, space exploration, etc.? #satellite #connectivity #ewaste #space #regulation.

ORION HEAT SHIELD of ARTEMIS I: What went wrong? Should we be worried? Heat shields are critical. “They either work or they don’t,” said Matt Gasch of NASA to Smithsonian Magazine in 2019 [1]. If they fail catastrophically, the crew vehicle burns up on reentry. They are a “single point of failure,” Gasch elaborated [1]. But what if they only “partially” fail? The world witnessed the success of the Artemis I mission, culminating with the descent and recovery of the Orion capsule. It appeared “picture perfect.” However, recent post flight analysis has shown some cause for concern. Howard Hu, NASA Program Manager of Orion, said, and I quote, "We're seeing larger…pieces that are coming off versus being ablated [2].” He further stated, “So we had more liberation of the char material during reentry before we landed than we had expected [2].” To be clear, pieces of ablative heat shield that leave in chunks are unable to perform their critical heat removing role. This is a concern because the Artemis mission is more challenging than any previous mission. “Orion came home faster and hotter than any spacecraft prior, traveling at 24,500 mph in 5,000 degree Fahrenheit temperatures [3].” Success hinges on the “new” Lockheed Martin heat shield. The material isn’t actually new, just the way they made it is new [4]. Could this be a problem? According to Lockheed Martin, “The heat shield’s TPS still features the same ablative material used in Apollo missions, but the building process has changed [4].” They don’t fill 300,000 small honeycombs with ablative, but use ~300 large “blocks” of machined ablative instead [4]. It is the same material but different processing. With the tremendous advances in both ablative and non-ablative TPS materials in recent decades, it begs the question “Why are we still depending on legacy materials from the 1960’s anyway?” Is the Orion heat shield situation similar to what happened to the protective insulation blanket on top of the Space Shuttle? It was “re-engineered,” as an intended improvement, but came off in big chunks, instead of the original small pieces. This caused catastrophic damage to the RCC leading edge of the Columbia. Shouldn’t the anomalies observed with the Artemis I heat shield be fully vetted before Artemis II launches with a human crew on board in November 2024? Well of course! While Artemis I returned safely, was that to be expected? Was it just good luck? Update Earth directed solar storms Another X1.12 flare late yesterday evening and a X3.98 flare right now! We are waiting to know if they have generated a CME that could join the other 4 already coming but the active region 3664 is moving towards the limb and therefore there is less probability of this happening. There hasn't been such a warning since January 2005. However, it is not a G5 storm which is the strongest and in 2003 led to electricity blackouts in Sweden and damaged the transformers of electricity grids in South Africa, at least in the forecasts. We should get by with the auroras at low latitude 😊 but the alert remains for possible problems with telecommunications satellites and in particular with GPS.
