WHEATLAND CEMETERY

Located approximately one mile west of the town of Wheatland, on Wheatland-Rio Oso Road off of Hwy 65. Going past the high school on the left, there will be a couple of turns in the road. At the stop sign, turn left and the cemetery is on the right.

There are over 2,000 listings at this cemetery. This is an active cemetery, meaning that burials are still taking place. As of November 1, 2008, the listings are current with all known recorded burials. This is the only accurate and complete list of burials available, and has truly been a labor of love. These records have been compiled, transcribed and formatted by Kathy Sedler.

Notes on my transcription: Some abbreviations are used for brevity. Blank areas denote information not provided. Although efforts have been made to insure accurate transcription, misspelling and errors may arise from information contained in the source documents. I am attempting to confirm dates as I go, by referencing the WCD ledger, California Death Index, and the tombstones. Until this list is complete, there may still be some errors.

Abbreviations used in my transcription: c/o = child of, d: died in, d/o = daughter of, f/o = father of, h/o = husband of, m/o = mother of, n/o = native of, s/o = son of, w/o = wife of.

I have included a column which indicates if there has been a tombstone photo taken for that individual.

This list is by no means complete, nor can the accuracy of it as yet be verified. There were apparently three different times that the records were burned – 1870’s, 1898, and 1949. At this time, verification of exact burial may be non-existent in many cases. Where differing locations have been noted in sources, those will be included in this work.

Blanks in the location columns indicate that those persons are missing from the on-site records. (- - - ) indicates that the person is listed as being buried here, but with no known location of burial.

This cemetery list will be further verified by re-walking the grounds and attempting to validate the on-site records – or correct them as appropriate. Also, I am looking up obituaries or newspaper entries for those with missing or incomplete dates of burial.

March 23, 2005 Legal Announcement - regarding abandonment of plots in Wheatland Cemetery. This announcement is to help the cemetery district to ascertain which plots may be no longer needed, or the persons have been buried elsewhere and can release the plot(s) back to the district.

You may use the following as a guide to locate the burials of individuals. This is only a general map of areas. When referring to the index, the numbers given below are BLOCK numbers. The top row is toward the back of the cemetery, whereas the bottom row of this graph is toward the road, or front of the cemetery.

Explanation regarding plot locations: Some persons are written twice in the cemetery burial book with two different plots. These are noted as seen in both entries. There are also some entries that do not have a plot location noted. They were either blank in the burial book or are obituaries I have found which are not listed at all in the burial book at the cemetery.

Wheatland Cemetery District was formed Oct. 5, 1937. The oldest stone I have found to date is 1861.
