Small and portable!
5 out of 5 stars
Small and portable!
I originally purchased this to use with my Macbook Pro. I loved it so much that when my Mom got a new Macbook Pro for her birthday I got this for her too. We both love it! It is so small, much different than the external drives I am used to from the past. I still have an old one connected to an older computer that is at least 3 times the size of this one and it needs to be plugged into an outlet. This one doesn't need to be plugged into an outlet. It transfers files very fast. It is formatted to work with a Windows computer out of the box. However setting it up to work with a Mac is very easy using the following steps: ● Plug My Passport into your Mac with the provided USB cable ● Open Disk Utility ● Select this hard drive on the left side list of drives ● In the center area click on Erase ● Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) ● Type what you want to name the drive ● Click Erase. I recommend this drive if you've got a Macbook or a Windows computer and are looking for an external drive that's easy to take along with you, although it's just as good if sitting on a desk. Either way, I love this external drive!!

This backup drive does exactly what it says. No complaints, Perfectly satisfied, though it may not be as fast as advertised on some systems, including mine.

On my computer, which is a 2014 era 1.86Ghz ASUS with 4Gb Ram, the process is a bit slow, even on a USB 3.0 slot. I used the included software to backup about 45 Gigs of documents, photos, and music for an initial trial. It took about 90 minutes for 45 Gigs. That's about 1 Gig per two minutes, far from what some users report at 5 Gigs per second. This was on a USB 3.0 slot. So, just to warn you ahead of time, it may be pretty slow on low performance computers. Especially for large back ups.

You can schedule backups hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly automatically, and the backup software that is included in this drive will update any information you've saved on your computer's hard drive in that span of time. This is really convenient for me as a writer. I don't have to manually back up my files anymore. If I've been working on a long file like a book for over a month, I can back up my whole document on the first backup, and then it will back up just the part I've written since the last backup, in subsequent backups. For instance, I did my second backup today, and it was just 13 Megs of information that I've added since my initial 45 Gig first backup. This second backup took about 40 minutes total. Backing up information can be done in the background if you want to work on other things while it is taking place, which makes the included software convenient. Just click one button for each subsequent backup, or if you have the Western Digital drive attached, it will backup at the specified hour, day, week, or month that you want to backup, automatically, with no click of a button..

You can initially choose which file paths and folders you want to backup. You don't have to back up your computer's whole hard drive in automatic backups. In my case, I chose just Documents, Photos, and Music.

As other users have hinted, the files are backed up on the Western Digital drive in a special file format with different file extensions than the source file on your hard drive. They appear in a "bin" folder on the Western Digital hard drive. Though not that obvious, they are still easy to find. Restoring backed up data is basically one click of a button as well, using the software included. I have not tried restoring data as yet.

However, if you would rather back up your files manually and exactly as they are on your computer's hard drive (same file names and extensions, etc.), you can do so just as easily as with any other USB drive. Simply copy the files directly to the Western Digital hard drive using your Windows File Explorer, like you would with any USB drive. Just out of curiosity, I copied my 45 Gigs of files manually a second time, not using the Western Digital backup software, but Windows file explorer instead. The process was painless and easy since Western Digital drive is formatted in NTFS, just like most computer hard drives. It only took 2 minutes for my computer to copy 45 Gigs of files directly to the Western Digital drive using Windows copy feature rather than Western Digital's software. This was on a USB 3.0 slot.

So, it easy to use this drive with the included software, or just as a supplemental hard drive saving to it like you would any USB drive.

Works as advertised and expected. Perfect for what I need to store and backup all my movies, music, documents, pictures.... It comes with 18" USB 2.0/3.0 compatible data cable and works flawlessly right out of box, no driver, no software, no special setup required to run. This hard drive is USB powered from your PC or devices connected to so there is no AC cord/adapter required. Also I like its 3 year warranty, much longer warranty than 1 year warranty I typically get for other similar products.

It works great with all of my devices I did tested with...Xbox, Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows XP, Macbook. It won't work on smart phones nor tablets. This is not a solid state drive (SSD) if you are looking for one. It also comes with the software to password protect and auto backup your files on this external hard drive. There is a protective case you can buy to protect this device but it is not included with the purchase.

I bought this drive hoping to back up my entire computer to it, which worked absolutely perfectly. I own a Mac, and while the packaging stated Windows 10, It worked perfectly well after a simple reformatting (This is also stated in the "Features and Details" section of the product).

In terms of aesthetics, the drive stays fairly slim, but is completely composed of plastic. The plastic is not horrible, it's really nice actually, but I still would have preferred a different build material, one that would protect the internals more. I did purchase an add-on case, so I think that takes care of the problem.

I do not have too much experience with backup drives as I usually don't take the way of caution and instead decide to trust my computer's SSD, but with this drive I am happy to say the switch has been fast and easy. I think it was well worth the asking price compared to other options, especially for a name brand like WD. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a simple USB backup drive.

Dead simple to use, very compact to make it portable...it's really a good drive. I don't even notice it's in my bag, and the fact that it runs entirely off USB means no additional (and bulky) power supply. I have to confess to being surprised at how inexpensive mass storage has become...1 TB is really quite a bit of space at this price point.

Installation is so easy as to be trivial - on a Windows 7 machine, I just plugged it in...the drive was recognized immediately and ready to go in about 2 minutes. Data transfer is speedy enough to support watching movies.

My major nit is all the crap that is on the drive. Frankly, I'm not going to use something like this for automatic backups...for me this is a portable drive, not really something that's going to be plugged in all the time. I didn't need nor want any of the applications on the drive, so I just deleted them all.

Anyway, a good drive, especially for the money. I like it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great portable external hard drive
Reviewed in Canada on January 4, 2017
I purchased this as a backup storage companion to the data on my desktop and have been extremely pleased with it.

This external drive is very compact and only requires a single USB slot to power it. This means that you can pretty much plug and play it with any computer in the world. Speeds are as good as any internal hard drive and when reading/copying larger files, the sequential read speeds of 110MB/s are much faster than the USB 3.0 flash drives that I have lying around.

In addition, for those using Apple computers, I would recommend you format it to exFAT to allow writes to it. exFAT can be written to by both Windows and Apple computers, but the standard NTFS file system that the drive comes with will only allow Windows systems to write to the drive as Apple computers do not natively support it without third party software.

Not much more to be said. It works, and it works well.

El disco duro llegó en impecables condiciones y con toda su documentación. Lo recomiendo mucho por el precio ya que en otras tiendas se puede comprar por casi el doble y los tiempos de entrega son muy buenos.

Bought this as a backup drive for my son's Dell XPS. Worked like a charm.

Originally bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB. The Dell wouldn't even recognize it, and then it would show up after 2 or 3 minutes in "Computer", but then the backup program wouldn't see it. Tried to run Seagate diagnostic tools - they could detect the device but couldn't run any tests - all would FAIL after a few minutes. Plugged the Seagate into my Mac - no problems. Formatted it for OSX and now its golden.

Thought the problem might somehow be the Dell (made no sense since every other device worked on that USB bus) so ordered the WD drive. Didn't use the WD software - just Win10 backup. Piece of cake.

    Goo figure.
