Malaria Prevention Program Turns Ten
NetsforLife® reduces cases by 45%
 

NetsforLife®, Episcopal Relief & Development's award-winning malaria prevention and control program, celebrated its 10th year earlier this week on World Malaria Day. The program, which was piloted in Zambia in 2006, has resulted in a 45% reduction in malaria cases where NetsforLife® is active. The disease still kills one child every two minutes in sub-Saharan Africa.

Anglican Consultative Council Meets in Zambia

The 16th meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council took place in Lusaka, Zambia, April 8-19. The three elected representatives from the Episcopal Church--Rosalie Simmonds Ballentine, Bishop Ian T. Douglas and the Rev. Gay Clark Jennings--attended and participated fully.

Bishop Montgomery to be Honored  
by St. Augustine College
April 28 El Puente Gala 
 
St. Augustine College will hold its annual  El Puente Awards Gala April 28 at 6 pm at the Aragon Ballroom (1106 W. Lawrence Ave., Chicago). This year, the Rt. Rev. James W. Montgomery, Episcopal Bishop of Chicago (Retired), will receive the "El Puente Achievement Award." This recognition is given by St. Augustine College to individuals and entities that have an exemplary record of service.

16th Annual Ecumenical Sunday
May 22 at St. Mark's, Glen Ellyn 

Join Bishop Lee on Sunday, May 22 for the 16th Annual Ecumenical Prayer Service at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Glen Ellyn. There will be a 4 pm reception before the 5 pm worship service. The Rev. Dr. Larry L. Greenfield, the executive minister of the American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago, the theologian-in-residence for the Community Renewal Society and the new executive director of the Parliament of the World's Religions, will preach. All are welcome.

Opportunities for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation are scheduled each spring at
St. James Cathedral and at host congregations in our deaneries. People from any congregation and deanery are welcome to participate in any of these services.
  
If you are planning to present candidates we ask that you review these guidelines and contact the host congregation and the Bishop's Office as soon as possible (a month in advance is preferred).

Antiracism Training in July
 
The next Understanding & Analyzing Systemic Racism training offered by the Diocesan Antiracism Commission and partner organization Chicago ROAR will be July 28-30 at the Institute of Cultural Affairs in the USA.

Understanding Islam: A Two Part Series
Hosted by Trinity Episcopal Church, Wheaton 
 
Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton will host two presentations with Scott Alexander, associate professor of Islamic Studies and director of the Catholic-Muslim Studies Program at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Thursday, April 28: Islam and Muslims in the Domestic and International Context, Moving Beyond Media Sound Bites. Doors open at 6:30 pm, talk begins at 7 pm.

Thursday, May 19: Islam 2.0: The Messengers of God and the Muslim In Us All.  Doors open at 6:30 pm, talk begins at 7 pm.

Prayer and Discernment: A Quiet Day
April 30 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Evanston  

On April 30 at St. Luke's in Evanston, the Rev. Mark McIntosh will offer meditations on the resurrection appearances of Jesus as sources of refreshment in the spiritual life. McIntosh will offer talks at 9:15 am, 10 am, and 11 am, and will conclude with noontime prayer at 11:45 am. All are welcome to attend and to come and go quietly as your time permits.  
Lost Boys of Sudan Documentary & Discussion
May 12 at All Saints' Chicago  

All Saints' Episcopal Church in Chicago will host a screening of the documentary film "God Grew Tired of Us" on Thursday, May 12 at 7:30 pm. John Dau, one of the film's stars, will join the group for discussion following the film. We will also be joined by Sean Tenner from the Sudanese Community Association of Illinois.
Contemplative Leadership with Brian Taylor
May 16 - 18 at the Nicholas Center 
 
Clergy and lay leaders are invited to join the Rev. Brian C. Taylor for a Contemplative Leadership retreat. Explore a way of being contemplative that can be practiced both in solitude and action. 

Retreat time will alternate between talks given by Taylor; guided contemplation; small groups; Daily Offices, dinners out; quiet retreat time; and opportunities to meet individually with Brian. Learn more and register.

College for Congregational Development Training
July 24 - 31 at Cenacle Retreat and Conference Center
 
The College for Congregation Development, recently launched in the Diocese of Chicago, is a two year training program designed to equip congregational clergy and lay leaders with the knowledge, skills and practices needed to develop their congregations into healthier and more faithful communities.

The next training session will be July 24 - July 31 at the Cenacle Retreat and Conference Center, with the second session in the summer of 2017. Read more about this new program and email Andrea Mysen with questions.

A Celebration of Scandinavian Episcopal Life
April 30 at St. James Commons 
 
On April 30, St. James Cathedral will host a Celebration of Scandinavian Episcopal Life in Early Chicago, sponsored by the Swedish American Historical Society, the Center for Scandinavian Studies at North Park University, and the F.M. Bishop Anderson House invites the diocese to celebrate and honor the Rev. Ron Valentine & Mr. Bill Totsch as 2016 Marion Faldet Volunteers of the Year. Join Bishop Anderson House for The Art of Healing, Sunday, May 1, 6 - 9 pm at the Society For Arts (112 N. Milwaukee Ave.) The evening features cocktails, dinner, silent auction, wine pull, and Kay Lewis leading the paddle-raise for Bishop Anderson House. St. Andrew's Pentecost Dinner and Concert

Nadia Bolz-Weber
July 16 at St. Ignatius of Antioch 
 
St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church will host bestselling author and ELCA pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber on July 16. The morning session will feature an educational liturgy, in the style of Nadia's church, House for All Sinners and Saints. The afternoon session will address reaching beyond our church walls to the larger community. Individual tickets are still available. Learn more.
In Memoriam:  Patricia Drew

We are sad to report that Patricia M. Drew died on April 25 at the age of 85.
 
Drew was an active leader at Holy Comforter Church (Kenilworth), for 61 years and was honored by Episcopal Charities and Community Services last year as a life trustee.
 
Drew was also a long-time leader of the Cathedral Shelter of Chicago, now called ReVive, and received many honors for her work, including the "Heart of Gold" award from the United Way of Chicago. She served as president of the diocese's Bishop's Associates until her death. 
 
Pat is survived by her husband, Bob, and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held May 25 at Holy Comforter. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

St. Mary's Park Ridge will host New Chicago Brass, an 11-piece brass ensemble, presenting "Home Sweet Home," a showcase of original works for brass by American composers on Friday, April 29 at 7pm. Free admission. More about New Chicago Brass.

St. John's, Chicago will offer a free concert with Jesus Garcia on May 15 at 3 pm. Garcia will present outstanding piano works of classical and folkloric Mexican music. Free to all.

Grace Oak Park hosts Fiesta de Mayo, a fundraiser for their youth J2A Pilgrimage to Mexico, on Sunday, May 15 at 12:15 pm. Enjoy a catered lunch, silent auction and music from the youth choirs.
