Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
This session will examine recent research on teacher shortages and the inequitable distribution of teachers in relation to policy and practice initiatives designed to address these issues more effectively than has often been the case in the past. The symposium will highlight knowledge leading to action by presenting research providing national and state level data and projections on growing teacher shortages that disproportionately affect our most disadvantaged students, and research that suggests how solutions can be achieved. It will also describe the work that is being done by researchers who are collaborating with policymakers and educators to use this knowledge base to create smarter, sustainable solutions. A panel of researchers and educational policy leaders will discuss policy and practice changes that have occurred as a result of the research, efforts that are underway, and the additional research and policy work needed to support actions that will lead to lasting solutions to the inequitable distribution of qualified teachers.
