New SORP Committee Announced

14 November 2006

The Charity Commission and The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) today formally announced the membership of its new Charities SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) Committee.

The new members were recruited through open, external advertising for the first time; the result is a more diverse Committee with a broader view of the sector than ever before. It includes not only accounting experts, but also individuals with general sector experience who can bring a 'layperson's' view to the table.

The Committee has already started to look at the challenges ahead and an important programme of work over the next three years lies ahead. Agendas, papers and minutes will be available on our websites both to inform the sector of the issues and challenges faced and to give transparency to the work of the new Committee.

Andrew Hind, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission and Chair of the SORP Committee said:

"The SORP is a critical aid to charities as they seek to improve their standards of public accountability and transparency. I’m delighted to welcome all the new members of the SORP Committee. We have a Committee that is now more representative of sector, professional and indeed wider interests than ever before. This diversity of experience will prove invaluable and help ensure we communicate and engage fully with the sector as the Committee’s programme of work develops."

Kirsty Gray, OSCR’s Head of Monitoring and Investigations and Deputy Chair of SORP Committee, said:

‘OSCR welcomes its new responsibilities as joint SORP-making body with the Charity Commission. The open recruitment process has resulted in a SORP Committee with an impressive breadth of talent and experience within its membership, and we look forward to working with the Committee on financial reporting improvements in the charity sector across all jurisdictions of the UK.’

Notes

The Charities SORP - Accounting and Reporting by Charities - is a Statement of Recommended Practice, providing accounting and reporting recommendations for charities throughout the UK.  It provides an authoritative interpretation of the application of accounting standards for charities and sets specific recommendations on how to account for sector specific transactions.

The Charity Commission and OSCR are approved by the Accounting Standards Board

as the joint SORP-making body for UK charities and is charged with the recruitment of the SORP Committee and maintaining, developing and publishing the Charities SORP.

The Accounting Standards Board is the body charged with developing and issuing UK accounting standards and, as the UK standard setter, ratifies the membership of the SORP Committee.  See www.frc.org.uk/asb for further information.
