Nature notes
It was just before midnight when the honking could be heard. The large skein of pink-footed geese was flying far lower than usual, and its calls bounced off the roofs of the little North Yorkshire village of Bagby. Anyone hearing these yapping and yelping sounds might easily understand why these geese used to be known as the beagles of the sky. Even the village dogs thought that the geese were fellow canines, and started barking in response — including the actual beagle who lives near the pub. In winter, pink-footed geese are gregarious and especially noisy. Having nested in Iceland, Greenland and Spitzbergen, they come south to Britain for the mild weather and food. Some winter flocks can number tens of thousands. Jonathan Tulloch

The strike lasted nearly 14 weeks.
