The Importance of Mathematical Competencies: When and for Whom Do They Matter?

Abstract
Mathematics presents global challenges for students, impacting their college admissions, STEM pursuits, and overall quality of life. Understanding diverse skills and characteristics related to mathematics throughout development is essential for optimizing students’ learning outcomes in Algebra and beyond. In this symposium, we explore the importance of specific mathematical competencies that prepare students for success in mathematics. We specifically investigate students’ knowledge of fractions, decimals, and other pre-algebraic skills, students’ perceptions of instruction aimed to bolster these skills, and individual and contextual differences in learning opportunities. By discussing competencies across students’ development and within a variety of populations, our session will provide foundational knowledge for future research aimed at bolstering these competencies.
