Review
This ESL or "English as a second language" program is one of three titles in the Dummies language series (French and Spanish are also available). This two-CD set offers a workbook-like intro to the basics of the language. On the positive side, the program is straightforward, offering practice in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Twenty-four interactive lessons teach thousands of words that are useful for everyday life. Lessons are delivered via text, but are frequently accompanied by a quiz, game or recording session. Pronunciation feedback is given, but we had trouble operating this feature on two computers. Disk swapping was also a nuisance. We found the software tricky to navigate and use. Icons are non-intuitive and other features weren't working. For instance, in a question and answer exercise, we couldn't figure out how to get the software to read the questions aloud. This is a frustrating program!
