Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Jan. 19

In a vote that ended Jan. 19, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Jan. 14.

The Enquirer has mailed certificates for fall and winter winners through Dec. 15 to athletic departments. The next round will go out in mid-February.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team: Miami Valley Christian Academy – Miami Valley Christian Academy won three straight games after beating Lockland and St. Bernard-Elmwood Place.

Ohio girls basketball team: Walnut Hills – The Eagles won 39-35 at Milford on Jan. 11, extending their winning streak to a season-high three games.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Ryle – The Raiders beat Grant County 68-61 and Cooper 57-52, extending a winning streak to three games.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Bellevue – The Tigers moved to 11-4 with victories at Beechwood and at Carroll County.

Boys winter team: Elder wrestling – At the Catholic Invitational Tournament, Elder was the highest local finisher, taking third with 181 points.

Girls winter team: Mercy McAuley bowling – The Wolves handed Roger Bacon their first match loss on Jan. 9, then topped St. Ursula 2335-2257 on Jan. 11.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Bryce Curry, Lakota West – He had 23 points on 7-of-8 shooting with five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a 68-38 win over Mason Jan. 9.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Pryce Murphy, Eastern – He had games of 16 and 11 points to lead the team to two wins in league play that improved its record to 10-3.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Marissa Hunt, Seton – She came off the bench in a win over St. Ursula and posted a stat line of 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Kylie Jones, Norwood – The senior recorded her fifth double-double of the season when she grabbed 18 rebounds and scored 14 points in a win over Summit Country Day.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Caleb Eaglin, Newport Central Catholic – He had 22 points and 19 rebounds in the team’s win over Bellevue in the All “A” Classic Ninth Region tourney.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: Sophia Gibson, Notre Dame – She scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a comeback win over Simon Kenton, then scored a career-high 28 points in a 32-point win over Great Crossing.

Ohio boys bowler: Jayden Brown, Elder – The sophomore shot games of 290 and 225 in a match against La Salle. The 290 was his personal high, and the single game and 515 series are both the highest in the Greater Catholic League-South this season. The series is eighth in school history and the 290 ninth.

Ohio girls bowler: Ali Bell, Eastern – The sophomore shot games of 268 and 245 in a win over Whiteoak Jan. 11, setting personal bests for high game and series (513) and breaking her own school record for high game. She is averaging 218.9 for the season.

Northern Kentucky boys bowler: Tyler Ketron, Cooper – He shot games of 263 and 221 to lead the Jaguars to a win over St. Henry.

Northern Kentucky girls bowler: Josie Hollingsworth, Boone County – She shot a two-game series of 440 in a win over Conner.

Gymnast: Maddy Smith, Turpin – Smith finished fifth on the balance beam out of 76 gymnasts and finished 33rd on the floor event at the Worthington Kilbourne Invitational on Sunday.

Ice hockey player: Christopher Heekin, St. Xavier – The senior had a strong offensive showing this weekend at the Rasmus Memorial tournament. Heekin had a hat trick in the Bombers’ game against Anthony Wayne and then followed that up with five goals in their final game against Northview on Sunday.

Ohio boys swimmer/diver: Jaeger Ellerman, St. Xavier – He set a new Southwest Classic meet record with a time of 2:00.16 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Ohio girls swimmer/diver: Sophia Stinson, Harrison – She broke three school records at the Southwest Classic, touching the wall in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.24, swimming a time of 20:32.78 for one mile, and 5:25.76 in the 400-yard individual medley.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys swimmer/diver: Joel Klein, Boone County – He was the runner-up in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke in a quad meet.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls swimmer/diver: Claire Monahan, Notre Dame Academy – She took third place in the 500-yard freestyle at the National Catholic Championships.

Boys wrestler: Logan Dean, Bethel-Tate – At the Mason Comet Invite, Dean clinched first place at the 126-pound bracket, going 4-0 overall.

Girls wrestler: Jesse Foebar, Clermont Northeastern – The reigning state champion won the 145-pound class at the Heart of Ohio, securing the title with a pin in 1:36 in the finals.
