KB942615 - bad MS Update - help

via Add/Remove programs but MS keeps wanting to reinstall it.
I am a computer know-nothing but have followed Bob Harris' advice until
I'm stuck. I changed Windows Explorer to view system and hidden files
via tools, folder options, view, show hidden files and folders, and
unchecked hide protected operating system files.
However, when I was able to then view the files, I see one file
installed today (yes, I had reinstalled the wretch) and an uninstall
file dated 12/14/07. MS kept trying to reinstall the file, so I
reinstalled it hoping I could use Bob Harris' instructions.
Anyway, I don't know what the H I'm doing. Could someone help, please,
since I don't want to foul up my computer? Thanks.

I have no idea what "Bob Harris" advised...
On a Windows XP SP2-based computer that has certain cumulative security
updates for Internet Explorer installed, Internet Explorer 6 may stop
responding when you try to visit a Web site

OR:
Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Open notepad and put the following in it...

It's a total of THREE lines saved into a a file that is not a .txt file
(file extension of .txt) but a .REG file (file extension of .reg).
Technically - it is nothing more than a text file with a file extension that
Windows recognizes and content that it knows what to do with. I'll repeat
them - but with "line #: " in front of each line so when it wraps you know
what it shold be.
line 1: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
line 2: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_PROTECT_DECOMPRESSION_FILTER_FROM_ABORT_KB942367]
line 3: "*"=dword:00000001
It's also recommended you press enter on the last line (taking you to a
fourth line with nothing on it) before you save the document in notepad as
(save as option) (type of "all files") 'ANameYouMakeUp.reg'... Then -
simply double-click on it and when it asks - you *do* merge it into your
registry.
Microsoft may release (may already have - dunno) a repaired patch for this -
so you can just wait if you desire - although in 30 seconds - with the
advice above (also found elsewhere) you could fix your problem.

His advice was just as I outlined above, step by step.
I really appreciate your advice on how to fix this but I am not computer
savvy enough to tamper with the registry.

Microsoft will patch the patch sometime? I plan on waiting until after
Christmas, then try it again.
In my computer, properties, automatic updates tab, click "notify me but
don't automatically download or install them", apply. Then close properties
window.
Now windows update should not automatically re-install this patch, or
anything else.
However, you will see a little yellow/gold icon in the systray, reminding
you that you have not installed all possible updates. Further, you must
remember to check back each month for new updates.

Thanks, Bob - actually, that's precisely how I have my computer set up -
i.e., to notify me of updates but not install until I choose to. In
this case, it's not telling me what it's going to install - I'm just
supposed to click on "Install". Yes, that little icon is in the
systray - I just wish I had been given the option to decline to install
the patch. I'm just hoping MS finally decides to issue a patch to fix
the patch which was supposed to fix something else. Apple is beginning
to look attractive. <EG>

When you click the shield in the tray, the window that
pops up should have a "customize" button; click it.
Find your number and remove the check from it. Click
to install the rest. Then let it install the others
if there are any.
Then go to MS and set your update preferences to not
offer you that one anymore. Look for the link to
Update prefs.

Thank you!!! It has now gone. It was a cumulative patch so hopefully
MS will issue an update for that one. What a nuisance it has been.
