Thousands of BBC News website users wrote to the BBC to demand the release of Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston. They signed an online petition and the names are published here.

Now that Alan has been freed by his captors, the petition has been closed. Thank you to everyone who added their name to show support for Alan Johnston.

Mr Johnston disappeared on 12 March.

There was a worldwide response to the online petition, which opened on Monday, 2 April and coincided with a full page appeal in the UK's Guardian newspaper.

We have published about 200,000 signatures.

The petition stated:

"We, the undersigned, demand the immediate release of BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston. We ask that everyone with influence on this situation increase their efforts to ensure that Alan is freed quickly and unharmed."
