Lord Uilliam mac EoinLearn to Read Medieval Music Notation IHave you ever wanted to learn to resurrect those beautiful medieval musical manuscripts by translating them into modern music notation? Now's your chance! Working from facsimiles of the original manuscripts, this series of courses will teach you how to directly touch the music of the medieval period. This class will focus on the "modal period" of medieval music from the Notre Dame school of sacred music and the the troubadour and trouvere chansonniers (songbooks) of the 12th and 13th centuries. Feel free to bring an instrument, as we will play our transcriptions if time permits! A (very) basic familiarity with modern music notation is assumed. If you know a half note from a sixteenth note and know your alphabet from A to G, you'll be fine!1 hour230Oncesun12p-1p5

Lord Uilliam mac EoinLearn to Read Medieval Music Notation IIThis class is a continuation of "Learning to Read Medieval Music I" and assumes that you have at least a passing familiarity with medieval music notation in general and with the modal notation of the late 12th and early 13th centuries in particular. It's recommended that you take both courses to get a full understanding, but you are welcome to start here if you feel you have the background! In this course we will focus on the Franconian system of musical notation that was dominant throughout the the late 13th century, until it was replaced by the Ars Nova notation that continued until the Renaissance. As with the first course in this series, we will work from facsimiles of the original medieval manuscripts to produce polyphonic (multi-part) and instrumental dance music. A (very) basic familiarity with modern music notation is assumed. If you know a half note from a sixteenth note and know your alphabet from A to G, you'll be fine!1 hour230Oncesun1p-2p2
