Johnson to announce retirement?

Randy Johnson, a five-time Cy Young Award winner, 10-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer, scheduled a conference call for Tuesday evening amid multiple reports that he is planning to announce his retirement.

Johnson originally planned to speak Wednesday morning to "discuss his baseball future," his agents at Octagon said in a press release Tuesday afternoon. But he later rescheduled the call so it won't conflict with Wednesday's announcement of the 2010 Hall of Fame class.

Agent Barry Meister declined to shed any insight into the pitcher's intentions.

"People can speculate all they want,'' Meister told ESPN.com.

When pressed on Johnson's plans, Meister replied, "No comment.''

Johnson, 46, has carved out a Cooperstown-caliber résumé in 22 major league seasons. He has a career record of 303-166, and ranks second in baseball history to Nolan Ryan with 4,875 career strikeouts.

In early June, Johnson pitched the San Francisco Giants to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals to become the 24th member of baseball's 300-win club. But he suffered a torn rotator cuff in early July and missed 2½ months before returning to pitch out of the bullpen for the Giants in late September. Johnson is currently a free agent.

In early December, Johnson's other agent, Alan Nero, said the pitcher was still undecided about a possible return.

"It depends whether he still has the fire and whether he wants to compete and how he feels," Nero told The Associated Press. "He's enjoying his family. In the past he was always so motivated to get back out there. Now, it gets to a point he's going to make some decisions, and I can't speak for him."

Meister conceded that it's unorthodox for a pitcher to hold a conference call to "discuss his baseball future.''

"Randy's an unorthodox guy,'' he said.
