Unearthed ... St Paul's
remains have been found
PAUL was born a Jew named Saul in 10AD in Turkey. He was alive at the same time as Jesus but the pair never met.
AFTER Christs death he heard Jesuss voice on the road to Damascus, saying: “Saul, why do you persecute me?” He became a Christian and changed his name.
PAUL then dedicated his life to spreading the word of Christ.
HIS famous epistles feature in the New Testament.
OPPONENTS saw Paul as a troublemaker and in AD60 he was beheaded in Rome.
Vatican archaeologists yesterday revealed they had reached an ancient marble sarcophagus believed to contain the Apostles remains.
It is deep beneath the altar of the church of St Paul Outside the Walls.
Vatican expert Giorgio Filippi made the find after a five year investigation.
He lifted stones in the floor ? below an old marble plaque saying “Paul Apostle Martyr” ? and discovered long-forgotten underground chambers and tunnels.
He also found three vertical holes leading down to the lid of the sarcophagus, which is thought to have been buried in 390AD as the church was built.
The holes were made so worshippers could lower devotional items to the tomb.
