Warriors news: Kevon Looney undergoes surgery to repair core muscle injury

Golden State Warriors big man Kevon Looney underwent successful surgery on Tuesday at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia to repair a core muscle injury.

Looney appeared in 20 games for the Warriors in 2019-20 before the season was suspended due to COVID-19.

Looney is expected to be ready for whenever the 2020-21 season starts. He averaged 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in an injury-ravaged 2019-20 season. The 24-year-old shot 36.7 percent from the field.

The Warriors had the worst record in the NBA before games were suspended. After going to the NBA Finals five straight years, the Dubs were humbled in 2019-20 by injuries. Stephen Curry only played in five games due to a broken left hand, while Klay Thompson was set to miss the entire year recovering from his ACL tear.

The Warriors, though, should be playoff contenders in 2020-21 since Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins will be leading the charge. The Dubs will also have a top pick in the 2020 draft, unless of course they trade it.

Looney has career NBA averages of 4.4 points and 3.7 boards. He has been with the Warriors since the 2015-16 season and has been a key role player in their frontcourt.
