A CTSA Conversation: NIH release of RFA in December
"HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-term) Pain Effectiveness Research Network"
The NIH initiative to address the opiate use crisis is now fully engaged!
Part of the 'HEAL initiative' is a series of RFA's soliciting proposals to address pain management, with the goal of reducing the use of opiates and identifying the best non-opiate medications and other treatments for pain.
In December, an RFA will be released soliciting proposals for pragmatic randomized trials testing drugs, devices, and other interventions to better treat pain in outpatients. These will be moderate-sized trials, most likely be multi-site, and use the UG2/UG3 staged mechanism. These are NIH-wide solicitations, so they are interested in a variety of types of pain. The NIH informational notice link gives you a good idea of what they are looking for and is pasted below:
https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-NS-19-022.html
The RFA will be released around 12/18 with due dates as early as Feb. Given that we are heading into the holidays, it would be wise for investigators considering applying to begin organizing now. NC TraCS will be happy to provide technical assistance, although trials will need to be managed through an appropriate Center or Department.
Join us for a Conversation on this topic!
Wednesday, December 12th 12noon to 1:30 PM at NC TraCS.
We hope the session will provide opportunities to discuss ideas and identify collaborators. UNC can participate in multiple submissions, although any given practice is unlikely to be able to participate in more than one trial. NIH will be utilizing their Trial Innovation Network (TIN) to coordinate activities. We'll discuss those issues as well along with any other questions or ideas that come out of this conversation.
General information regarding the NIH HEAL initiative can be found at:

If you are not able to attend this session in person, you can join us by WebEx, please see information below to do that.
We will be recording the session as well.
thank you,
