    If you liked Brokeback Mountain, you will love this book. The description on the back cover describes it as a 'gay romance', but don't let that fool you. This is no harlequin-esque piece of drivel. It is indeed a historical romance between two men, but there's much more to it. It's not too often you find yourself caring so much for characters that you can't sleep at night for want of reading more.     If you like masterfully written books with characters you care about and, in addition, like books with gay characters, you must read The Phoenix by Ruth Sims!. Even if you don't normally like historical fiction, you'll like this book. I haven't read many books in which the secondary characters are almost as interesting as the protagonists, but it's true in this case, and the protagonists are wonderful.
