I think there is a much simpler solution for restoring lost desktop.icons:
/usr/share/applications
contains all of them. Just drag any to the desktop. Icon picture can be set by rightclicking on the desktop symbol, line "File..." Set Icon, then choose one out of a number of icon folders in

There is easy and there is correct as in returning things to the same state as they were originally.
In my prior post I gave the proper method to Restore Desktop Icon but I see that despite my best efforts to create an accurate resource for those who are new to Puppy Linux some people have still not made use of it.
If you doubt the accuracy of my article then right click any desktop icon in any version of Puppy Linux and click “Show Location” then compare that with my article at the Puppy Linux FAQ.
Don't doubt your expertise puppyite,
and yes, "Show Location" leads to your mentioned folder.
Yet, /usr/share/applications works in Puppy 432, which I am writing from right now.
If all Puppy stuff were as consistant as your FAQ pages, wouldn't that be something? As things are, every version is a source of new surprises.
Still Puppy Linux FAQ is a wonderful source of knowledge about Puppy; it beats the diy frickling by far...

Barry Kauler’s site (developer of Puppy Linux) say’s 4.3.1 is most recent version.
Puppy 4.3.2 is an experimental Puppy version written by Barry K.
It Is mentioned in his blog as to what he was trying to do.
The link for download is ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distribu...-experimental1
Have fun!!

Hey, 8-bit,...thanks for that link! I'm on slow dialup,...so downloading is gonna take some time. BTW,..I use Puppy 4.3.0...and the "/usr/share/applications" drag-n-drop seems to work OK. If I need an icon picture,..I have some pics in a file I keep. I just edit the desktop icon,..and "set-icon" with one of my own saved pics.
let's not be so nit pickingly accurate.
You certainly are the most experienced puppyite in this post (at least). Yet Puppy is everything but a 150% accurate system. That's the charm of it, among other features.
So, to set things right. I said: I am writing from 432, not that the OP was writing or should be writing from 432.
Now I am writing from 431, because I wanted to see if your statement was correct. My 431 is a frugal install on a Linux partition with grub.
I can drag any application from /usr/share/applications to the desktop and open it from there! So can magikraven, obviously.
Yours is the correct way, mine is a short and dirty way. So why not, if it works?

I find nothing charming about inaccuracy. Puppy Linux is the best OS period. If I did not believe this I wouldn’t waste one minute telling people that it is. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t tell someone that Puppy Linux is superior to all other operating systems. Accuracy is an asset. Were I not to strive for accuracy I doubt Puppy Linux FAQ would receive 1000+ hits per day.
I do not have time to read Barry’s blog. It it pointless to confuse people by referencing an experimental version of Puppy Linux either in this forum or on the Puppy Linux FAQ. If and when 4.3.2 becomes the official release, then I will post a download link to it on the Puppy Linux FAQ Download Page.
