Winners and losers from the MLB Winter Meetings

So, now that the Winter Meetings have concluded, a blockbuster trade has gone down, Barry Bonds announced his retirement, and a few free agents were signed, we can start to look at winners and losers from the week in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The New York Yankees are clear winners in all this; they got younger, more athletic, and added a guy in Curtis Granderson that might hit 40 home runs, and steal 30 bases regardless of his fallings against left handed pitching may be. While Granderson’s contract was a little to large for the Detroit Tigers, but he is not even amongst the top ten paid Yankees. The Detroit Tigers also appear to be big winners here. They traded two all stars from 2009, for four players who may make a big impact on their roster in 2010. They also saved around 30 million in payroll over the next few years.

Other winners include whoever may be a free agent closer. Brandon Lyon signed a three year 15 million dollar deal with the Houston Astros, and that is very good news for the agents of Jose Valverde, fellow former Tiger Fernando Rodney, Mike Gonzales, and JJ Putz. The Milwaukee Brewers also appear to be winners, even though they may have overpaid for P Randy Wolf. The Brewers had the worst rotation in baseball last year and the addition of Wolf will surely help them improve there. Honorable mention to the Baltimore Orioles for taking a few steps towards improving their club as well.

Now there are a few clear losers in all of this. The Los Angeles Angels lost their leadoff hitter in Chone Figgins, and that was the player they needed to keep. The San Diego Padres are also losers since they may not be able to afford to resign one of their starters because he may be worth three million dollars. The Chicago Cubs also lost since they could not dump Milton Bradley and his huge contract. However the biggest loser here is Johnny Damon, with the addition of Granderson the Yankees can now make Damon a take it or leave it offer on the bottom end of what he is worth.
