Researching two ancestors, John & Alfred Thomas Hobbs, brothers from Hambleden in Buckinghamshire England who emigrated in 1869 on the Hydaspes arriving in Lyttelton on 30 Sept 1869. What happened to them after? They were both gardeners. Any help would be appreciated.

The Barclays of Australia, most in Victoria (one in Western Australia) are descendants, in name only, of George Oliver Clapcott Barclay, who was married to my grandmother, Agnes May Dobson Barclay from 1924 to 1931.
As far as I know George Oliver Clapcott Barclay had no biological children. He would have been my step-grandfather.
My grandmother Agnes Dobson Barclay has three male great grandchildren, so the name will hopefully continue here, if we are lucky.

The only information I have is that my ancestor was resident at Orari Gorge Station in 1916. He was Thomas Baldwin/Balldon, born in 1845 at Tramore, Co.Waterford, Ireland, the son of David & Bridget Baldwin.

My great-Uncle Rev Canon Harold James West Knights MA(Cantab), and his wife Violet Lillian, emigrated to NZ in 1927. He was a life-long Anglican priest. He served in Amberley, Hokitika and then at St Mary’s, Esk Valley, 1939 – 1945 during which time he was also a Canon of Christchurch Cathedral. He and his wife were buried in plots 1 d and 1 e as shown on the http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzlscant/eskcem.htm page. Their elder daughter (Louie) Margaret Knights MBE, formerly Colonel Commandant of the New Zealand Women's Royal Army Corps, died shortly after the earthquakes in 2011, her younger sister Pauline Merriman West Knights in July 2013. They lived in Fendalton, ChCh. With the unfailing help of the present incumbent of the now combined parishes Rev Indrea Alexander and Warden Jenny Murphy, the ashes of the girls were interred at the same place on 23 December 2014, and a new headstone in memory of them all, spanning both plots, blessed. The service was conducted by an old family friend, Fr Rick Loughnan, (Catholic) Vicar General of Christchurch. The new stone reads as follows

I apologise for errors foolishly made in my 1st signing of the guestbook! My ancestors, John Murfitt & Mary Ann nee Topp & family on the Strathallan, arrived Timaru 1859; Charles Baker & wife Martha nee Goater & children, on the Mary Ann arrived 1859, Christchurch. Three generations of my Smith family (males) arrived in Christchurch on the Matoaka, 1860. My grt grandfather Thomas Smith had a flour mill in Rangiora, until times grew hard. He took his large family and wife, Ellen Usley nee Murfitt to live in Timaru. I have ancestors buried in Timaru Cemetery. Times were still very hard there for all these families. Marion 2014

My Murfitt ancestors arrived on the Strathallan 1959 - the first immigrant ship to Timaru, though the Murfitt family's destination was Port Cooper and they disembarked there. My Smith ancestors who arrived in NZ on the Matoaka 1960, moved from Rangiora to Timaru when flour was undergoing change and times were hard. My Baker family, came to Christchurch on the Mary Ann 1959 and settled in Timaru. Two of the sons were boatmen, Thomas & John Baker. Their brother-in-law, Francisco Scorringi married in Riccarton, lived in Ferry Road, Christchurch, then moved to Timaru with his wife and children 1871. M J Hansen 2014

I am searching for information about my great grandfather Michael Seyb who was born 6/8/1850 in Kindenheim, Rheinland Pflaz, Germany. He came to Timaru from Germany with his brother Johann Georg Seyb. Michael met and married my great grandmother Sylvia Louise Morgan who was born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England 31/5/1864. She died in Timaru on the 8/1/1904. My grandfather Henry Michael Seyb was born in Timaru 13/6/1889. He married Marion Elizabeth Sim born 5/12/1893 in Aberlour, Moray, Scotland. I understand the Seyb’s were roading contractors in and around Timaru. My father Michael Seyb was born in Timaru in 23/5/1921.

I am searching for information about Carrie Ethel Adams, the daughter of Caroline and Samuel Adams, who was born in Waimate 26/04/1884.There seems to be a family mystery surrounding her leaving the family home due to some sort of disgrace. My Great Aunt, Amy Hammick, lived at number 21 Roxburgh Street, Christchurch 2. I am sitting reading one of her letters dated 24th August 1965. Her English record show her as having married a David Jamieson in Prescott, Lancashire in about 1906 but I cannot find any records of a Mr Hammick. I know she had either sons, or grandsons, called David, Bruce and Alan. There was also a Brian who visited Canada in 1965 after having spent 3 months on the continent. I think Bruce was a Minister.

James McCormack and Ellen Hennessy were my ggrandparents. I know little about them. Their daughter, Johanna, was my maternal grandmother, who was born in Oamaru, married in Timaru in 1894, and died in Christchurch around 1942.

FYI in relation to Sergeant Stanley Bruce Thomson KIA 12/10/1917) you raise on your website a question as to his age. For the record he was born on 31.01.1890 in Enmore NSW, to Helen Broom Thomson nee Bowie and George Thomson both of whom had had Timaru connections but had eloped (I understand) to Sydney.
So far as I know Stanley had no children but he did have a half sister Thelma Waima Austin born 15 May 1910 to HBT and her second husband Edgar Austin. I believe that Thelma married and had child/children but didn’t have the nouse at the time to keep in touch with a cousin who contacted me over forty years ago.
While my relationship to Stanley is remote (first cousin once removed) I have been intrigued by a number of aspects of ‘his’ story as I’ve researched my wider Bowie history, including with the hope of finding that cousin who contacted me when I lived in Scotland. The curiosities include
• That HBT claimed to have been divorced when she married Austin in 1909 but no record of the divorce has been found in NSW or NZ (she was divorced from Austin also, in 1939)
• I cannot find when George or HBT or SBT returned to NZ but later records put HBT in Dannevirke and Wellington, and SBT in Christchurch, Wanganui and Wellington.
• The next of kin of SBT are given as EH Bowie, his grandmother in Christchurch in the NZ Army/NZ Archives record but Mrs E Austin, his mother in Dannevirke, in the Auckland Cenotaph record
• Yet a memorial to SBT apparently is inscribed on his father’s burial plot (20 March 1929) Timaru cemetery plot 525, which suggests some sorth of continuing relationship between SBT and George.
I’m sure this is more than you need to know. For what it’s worth I might add that a first cousin of SBT still living in Carterton has a war-time diary of SBT’s. I gather the diary is full of what seems to be insignificant content and don’t’ know how it got to Kathleen (who is currently inclined to hold on to it)

A MYSTERY. CAN ANYONE HELP. My grandmother who died in 1918 was Catherine Barrett who married John Coughlan. Catherine's parents, Michael Barrett and Mary Brosnahan died within 3 months of each other in 1879 and they left 6 children aged between 2 and 10. My grandmother in turn died young and my mother did not remember her and so did not know much about her. My query is who brought up those 6 children. Maybe some viewer of this great site has a story from their family history of their ancestors taking in some of the Barrett children. I am researching the Joines family who arrived in Canterbury in 1874 from Banbury in Oxfordshire. They mostly lived in and around the Springfield/Porter’s Pass area. Thomas and Sarah Joines were the head of the family. Their sons and daughters married into the Werges, Neugeschwender, Kerr, Hughes and Lapthorn families. My grandmother, Olive, their second youngest daughter married Thomas Barnard. My particular interest in your site was the photograph of my first cousin once removed, Frank Edward Joines, on Mt Peel station. There is also mention of him elsewhere on the site. My mother had told me that he had been head shepherd on Mt Peel and this is the closest I have come to finding proof. If anyone would be willing to share anything about the Joines family, I would be very grateful and in return would share what I know. Thanks.

I have recently discovered that my great great grandfather WILLIAM WELSH was a Blacksmith at Pleasant Point.
- He arrived in NZ from Scotland and the first record I can find of him was in the Timaru Elect. Roll of 1880.
- In 1878 he married a lady called RHODA NIBLET (or maybe Nesbitt). It would appear Rhoda was a Widow when she married William.
- William and Rhoda had 8 children; sadly Archibald their eldest died aged 2 after eating matches. He is buried at Pleasant Point along with a wee 3m old sister Jane. Their other children were Cecilia Matipo, Alexander McArthur, Archibald John, Agnes, Jane Carlyle, and Hilary Greta Gypsy.
- Somewhere between 1896 and 1900 they moved to ChCh were he continued to be a Blacksmith.
- He died in 1916.
- All record of Rhoda Welsh cease about this time however I wonder if she remarried to become Rhoda Wilson, or was this her maiden name or first married name - lots of questions!
Does any one have any information about the Welsh or Niblett families of this area, when, why and how they arrived and about his occupation as a Blacksmith at Pleasant Point.
I also wonder who the witness' were at their wedding at the Presbyterian Church at Pleasant Point, namely Mary Ann Opie ?teacher and Alex MacDonald ?Baker.
I would be delighted if some gaps could be filled in and am more than happy to share information.

I am researching my family tree the WILSON my Great Grandfather was just 3 years old when he arrived in Timaru from Melbourne in 1854.He married Margaret Thompson in Timaru on the 19th July 1876. William Robert Wilson parents were John & Elizabeth and I can not find any information about how they arrived in Timaru. William & Margaret had 4 children born in Farlie Creek the 4 more Children born in Bulls North Island ranging from 1877 to 1896. I would appreciate any information about my family one has. John (Jock) Fraser born 9 May 1814 in Dores, Inverness, Scotland son of James Fraser and Shara Scott. He arrived in Nelson, New Zealand in November 1841 on board the "Whitby". He had three wives Margaret Robertson, Helen McEwan, and Mary Booker. He drove sheep from Nelson to the McKenzie country and laid claim to many stations in that area, namely Braemar, Ben Ohau, Black Forrest and Tasman Island before retiring to Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, New Zealand. Jock is my 3rd great grandfather should anyone have a family link I would be delighted to compare and exchange family details.

I am just updating my post / insertion from about 6 years ago. My family name is Maze and between various relatives, we have constructed a reasonably comprehensive family tree than includes many South Canterbury families and surnames.
The Maze’s lived at Milford (just north of Timaru) and from the 1900’s at Pleasant Point. They farmed two farms, “Downlandsö which used to border the cemetery and “Totara Flatsö. My grandfather was born in the cottage located at the bottom of the road to the cemetery.

Thank you for the Elsom information. I'm now on the hunt for my grandmothers isde. She was Grace Campbell-McKellar and married Howard Elsom. We think she had at least 3 brothers and a sister Mary who we belive married a gentleman named Owens. Mary had a daughter who died @ 19 and they are both buried in Timaru cementry but no mention of the husband father. Grace is buried with Howard in Timaru. Am looking for further information on William Wood, bushman, Waimate - first record I have from 1880. Became labourer in 1893 after sawmills closed. Probably from London, married to Catherine Robinson. Have been unsuccessful in finding on passenger lists but must have come to NZ between 1867 and 1880.
Son William Wood, b. London 1867, m. Elizabeth Jane Gardiner (dau. of Thomas Gardiner and Mary Anne (Annie) Souter of Kent, UK) at Waimate in 1895. Lived in Timaru and Hook before returning to Waimate. Sons Albert Edward (1897) and William Thomas. William died 1922, Elizabeth in 1964, and both are buried in Waimate Cemetery.

Any help fleshing out the family line of Jock (John) Fraser welcomed.
In 1839 there were only about 2000 Pakeha (Europeans) in New Zealand. However the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, which saw New Zealand become a British colony, had an enormous effect on the New Zealand population. British migrants were offered a paid passage to New Zealand, and 40,000 arrived here between 1840 and 1860. Jock/John Fraser, the Great-Great-Great Grandfather of actor Russell Crowe, was one of them. He came to New Zealand about 1840 with his younger brother Hugh.
On reaching New Zealand Jock and Hugh first settled in Nelson. In 1856 Jock married Mary (nee Clarke) Booker, a young widow (37 years his junior) with babe in arms. Before her premature death in 1876 they would have 8 children.
The Fraser’s and others left Nelson (the oldest settled corner of South Island) seeking clean, free sheep country free from the taint of scab. Their search took them to the Canterbury Region, home of “Mackenzie Countryö. Mackenzie Country was one of the most celebrated pastoral areas in New Zealand. A great inland plain, noted for its pastoral richness and lakes.
About 1857 Jock took ownership of a large area (20,000 acres) in South Island from Pleasant Point to Marlborough. The Fraser brothers (Jock and Hugh) were the only highland Scots to take up sheep runs in the area. Most of the other men working the Mackenzie sheep runs were from England or low-land Scots. Jock and brother Hugh were the first to overland sheep from Nelson to Canterbury in the 1850s.
At this time the names of only two of Jock’s and Mary’s eight children are known. Daughter Jessie was born about 1858. Daughter Johanna was born in 1860 at Geraldine, and is the Great-Great Grandmother of Russell Crowe.
Jock’s brother Hugh sold their land in 1860 to Andrew Patterson and moved to North Island. In the 1860s Jock and Mary moved to Mt. Cook Station, one of Mackenzie Country’s historic sheep runs.
In May of 1876 Mary and her 18 year old daughter Jessie die within a week of each other and are buried in Pleasant Point Cemetery. Jock lived until 14 April 1893 when he died at the Timaru Hospital. His funeral notice was published in the Timaru Herald on 17 April 1893:
“FRASER - The friends of the late Mr John Fraser, are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, which will leave the Timaru Hospital at 11 o'clock this Morning, for the Pleasant Point Cemetery, which will be reached about 1 o'clock.ö
Brother Hugh’s family (after moving to the North Island) branched out of farming and ran a box factory in Eketahuna before moving to Wairoa (Hawkes Bay) and owning Willowflat Saw Mill.

Strathallan 150th Anniversary
The South Canterbury Museum will be opening its Strathallan display on the weekend of 28th November 2008. There will be an invitation only evening for Strathallan and early South Canterbury settlers descendants to preview the display and attend the launching of the book written to mark the 150th anniversary of the ships arrival.
"Timaru at Last. South Canterbury's Strathallan Immigrants" - the result of two and half years research and the help of many descendants will be available for sale. Its cover features an original painting of the Strathallan painted by Raymond Morris great grandson of J T Morris diarist, poet and artist who arrived on the Strathallan and lived in Timaru. There are sections on the voyage, biographies for 130 immigrants and runaway sailors and it also reviews some aspects of the early development of Timaru and South Canterbury and the lives of these immigrants, the founders of the town.
Descendants of Timaru pioneers wishing to attend should contact the South Canterbury Museum for details and an invitation.
The Timaru Herald will run a weekly column on Tuesdays commencing on the 30th September 2008 tracing the story of the voyage and it will include excerpts from the diaries of assisted immigrant J T Morris and cabin passenger the Reverend Charles Alabaster. Both men kept diaries on the voyage but of course viewed the daily events from quite different points of view. The column will continue each Tuesday until 13th January 2009 .
In 2009 on the weekend of the 17th of January there will be a number of activities and fireworks in the evening to mark the anniversary and details of that event will be available at a later date.

It's been a hard slog for some of the time but I have had contact with a number of very generous people who have shared their research and photographs. I have had several contacts via your website and just last week received the family story of Richard and Emma Wade. They had proved elusive and had been put in the too hard basket along with half a dozen others. It is now revealed that Richard changed his name in 1870 so no wonder I never found him!!
Also - I did reply to the lady regarding the Fishers on the Strathallan but it bounced back. There was a Fisher, a laundress with her four children and her husband was already in new Zealand. They are not her Fishers.

James and Ellen McCORMICK
My father was adopted and I have just found his mother and her family.
Looking for relatives and descendents of Josephine Catherine Margaret McCormick ( known as Kitt) who was born at Woolcombe’s Gully, Timaru in 1884. Her parents were James MCCORMICK and Ellen HENNESSY who married in on 26 Nov 1865 at St Patrick’s Chapel, Adelaide South Australia. Ellen Hennessy came out with her sisters to South Australia. At some stage the family moved to Timaru where Kitt was born. The MCCORMICK’s were a big family. James, Ellen and some of their family are buried at the Timaru cemetery.
In 1912 Josephine came to Horsham in Victoria Australia to be with her eldest brother Michael where she gave birth to a son James McCormick. James McCormack( Aussie spelling) was my father. He was left in Australia and adopted into the Horrigan Family.
Josephine MCCORMICK married Frank Spargoe NICHOLLS in Ashburton in 1917 and had 2 boys Francis Spargoe NICHOLLS and James William NICHOLLS. Unfortunately Josephine died in 1930 from asthma in Ashburton. She is buried in Ashburton. Both Frank and Jim have died as well.

Through your site I recently found out when my grandfather Frederick Smith Jeffery died. He was born Dundee Scotland 1888, married in 1910 and widowed 1911. He went to Timaru sometime in the 1920's(I think). He remarried and had another family - so somewhere in Timaru I have a 'half' Uncle Eric and cousins who I would really love to have contact with. I am searching for descendants of Mary Elizabeth Elliott (nee Gibson) and Daniel Elliott who married in Timaru in 1892. Their known children are Mary Bella Lydia Elliott born 1902 and Margaret who married a Traves. There are possibly other children. John McGregor, my grandfather,was born in Banffshire, [Scalan ] Scotland,in 1840,and emigrated to NZon the clippership, Chariot Of Fame, in 1862/3.
He and Harry Ford, the owner of The Grampian Station, drove a mob of several thousand sheep from Darfield to the Grampian, in the 1860s, where,as far as I can tell, John McGregor worked as a shepherd, and later, as manager.
In 1873, John then obtained a licence for a piece of land in the forks of the Cass River,and named it Glenmore, after the valley near his highland home.
In 1875,he incorporated Castle Hill Station into his holdings,and retained the name Glenmore for both stations.
In 1876 he was elected to the Mt Cook Road Board,an office he retained for many years.
In 1883 he was elected chairman of the McKenzie County Council.
In 1883 he lost a great number of sheep, due to hard winters, and slump years,
He left Glenmore in 1891, and retired to Burkes Pass.
In 1912,a Miss Roma Hope aquired Glenmore Station, and sold it in 1914 to Herbert Nalder. After his death, the station was transferred to Mrs Mary Murray,and is still in the Murray family name ,as far as I know.
Lake Alexandrina - The lake was named after Alexandrina Robinson,a sister of William and John Robinson,partners with John McGregor, in Glenmore Station.
The trout, for which the lake is famous,were liberated by John McGregor in 1881. He said the young trout were sent from Christchurch by train to Albury, and taken by coach from there to Burkes Pass, arriving about midnight. John McGregor drove straightaway to the lake, and liberated them just before dawn. Only 3 did not survive the trip.
Lake McGregor was named after John McGregor, owner of Glenmore Station.

I am looking for info on my family that lived in Pleasant Point from around 1880 to 1916. The name is Gibson and I know that Catherine the mother and Catherine the daughter and Ramsay the son are buried in the local cenetery. My ancestors arrived from County Down in Northern Ireland in the early 1860’s. John Maze arrived at Lyttelton in April 1863 aboard the “Huntressö. He then worked on Major Hornbrook’s station in South Canterbury before the arrival of his brother, Michael, in 1864.
They bought a 100 acre block of land and began farming at Milford, just outside of Timaru. They married sisters – John married Janet (also Jeanette) Brown while Michael married Sarah Brown. They then purchased a farm on the outskirts of Pleasant Point and the farm “Downlandsö remained in the Maze family for 100-years until the late 1980’s when my father’s cousin sold the farm – some 3000 acres.
My ancestors, Michael Maze and Sarah Brown, produced 11 children, one of whom was Michael Francis Maze who married a Sarah Jessop. They produced four children, Douglas, Cecil, Dorothy and June. Douglas was my grandfather and he married Flora Hutchison of Timaru.
Downlands was broken up into “lifestyleö blocks in the mid 1990’s.

I am researching George FOSTER (MY GGF) married Jane WEBSTER at Rollesby Station, Burkes Pass 1892, at this time George was the station manager.They later lived in Ruapuna and he worked at Caple? Jane WEBSTER was the daughter of Robert WEBSTER & Elisette CULLMANN (M 1872 - Timaru)Robert owned a Grocery store in Timaru 1871 - 1877, then owned a Furniture store in Barnard Street. At the time of his death in 1915 he owned the store at Washdyke. Elisette emigrated from Germany to Timaru, she was a sister of Freidrich Cullmann who owned businesses in Timaru - Baker & Boot Dealer.

WILLIAM MITCHELL was born 7 May 1847 Blairoch, Dumfries the natural son of Thomas Mitchell and Agnes Hewetson. [In the 1851 Census record for Carronbridge, Parish of Morton William’s mother’s name is spelt Agnas Hewitson and his name is recorded as William Hewitson.]
AMELIA ANNIE HERRING was born 1843 Wapping, Surrey. She left England on 28 August 1864 on the ‘Eastern Empire’ and arrived Lyttleton, New Zealand on 4 January 1865. She is listed as having travelled in the single women’s quarters as Amelia A Herring aged 25 years. [There is an obvious discrepancy in the age recorded and the date of birth.]
Her occupation was listed as ‘milliner’ and she travelled on Promissory Note No. 302 dated 24 August 1864.
William Mitchell and Amelia Annie Herring were married on 5 June 1866 at the Clarendon Hotel, Waihi Crossing, Geraldine New Zealand. The Marriage Entry in the records of the NZ Registrar-General’s Office describes William Mitchell as 20 years of age, a labourer and bachelor. The same record describes Amelia Annie Herring as 24 years of age, a dressmaker and a spinster. [There is a further age discrepancy in this record.]
William and Amelia Mitchell established a business selling drapery from a horse and gig for some years before moving to Ashburton. A successful drapery and clothier business developed in partnership with Henry Cranaway Turner. The Mitchell and Turner building still stands in Burnett Street, Ashburton with the initials M&T and the date 1874 prominent in the arch of the building. The size and nature of the building attests to the success of the enterprise.
Extensive land purchases, leasings and sales were undertaken by William and Amelia both in town and rural sections of Ashburton from 1879 to 1887. The electoral roll for Coleridge in 1879-80 lists William Mitchell as a leaseholder and in the Ashburton electoral roll for 1880-81 as ‘freeholder storekeeper’. In 1881 William Mitchell is described as a ‘farmer’ in Land Registry records.

The funeral notice for Amelia Annie Herring appeared in the Ashburton Guardian 28 May 1923 p4. It detailed the whereabouts/residence of her five sons at the time of her funeral – William (on a business trip to America), John T (Christchurch), Robert (Gisborne), Richard (Sumner) and Charles (Sydney, Australia).

I am researching the GARRICK family. Francis James Garrick a Christchurch solicitor owned 4215 acres at Geraldine. I think this area or part of becames "The Brothers", which I think was his sons' farm.
His son Tertius Bruce GARRICKwas born 1869, educated at Xavier College Christchurch and Lincoln College. A Pleasant Point Farmer, Chairman Levels local Council, Member Timaru Harbour Board. Buried timaru Cemetary 1/12/1941. His will left ú1000 to Plunkett Society in memory ofhis sister MAUD MABEL NEWMAN ú1000 to Cancer Research and ú5000 to Sth Canty Hospital Board and residue of his estate to his neice

My husband's grandfather,on his mother's side, Richard Campbell, worked all his working life at Timaru Herald Office. Richard & Mary Campbell and family arrived Lyttleton from Belfast on "Conflict" 1876 and settled in Timaru. My husband's mother was the daughter of Richard Jnr.
We loved Timaru and its history and had a great amount of assistance from there when writing my family tree book on

I am looking for descendants of James Farquharson and Isabella Gordon, who married in Oamaru, 1882. My grandfather, William Farquharson visited Geraldine and Ashburton in the 60's and lived in the area for a while in the 70's. He went to Weston Primary School. My G G Grandfather was Sgt E W Seager - the Police Officer who arrested the infamous sheep rustler - James McKenzie. Edward and his family were resident in Christchurch at the time however as the years have progressed the family has now moved on and only a couple of family members (that I know of) still reside in the Canterbury area. I followed Edwards footsteps and joined the NZ Police and for 4 years patrolled the MacKenzie Basin - having been stationed in Twizel. I have now left the Police (and the South Island) but still have fond memories of my days in the MacKenzie Basin and I look forward to returning there in the future. If you like the outdoor life-style and have not been to the MacKenzie Basin I recommend you make a point of visiting the area.

William Christmas(52)arrived in Milford in 1874 along with his son John (25) my great grand- and great, respectively, fathers on the ship 'Northampton into Lyttleton. William farmed at Milford and John was a storeman in Timaru living on "Town Belt"
John went bankrupt at one stage.
Living in Palmerston North, it is difficult to get down to Timaru for sufficient time to ferret out what little information there seems to be about the Christmases of Timaru.

My ancestors arrived in South Canterbury between 1862 and 1879=3 - three brothers who emmigrated from County Down in Northern Ireland.
The Maze's then set up home in Milford before settling in Pleasant Point, Temuka and Timaru. Although only Maze descendants live in the region now (rather than those bearing the Maze surname), "The Point" and the lands that originally comprised the Maze farm "Downlands" still feel like home.
My grandfather was laid to rest three years ago in the Pleasant Point cemetery. I live in England now, but still carry a piece of Pleasant Point's soul with me.
The South Canterbury Genealogy website is well put together and I sincerely hope it continues to grow.

I had no idea that my great-aunt was married in Timaru when we were in South Island in late October 2002.
It was only on our return to England did we receive her death certificate which I ordered in Australia we found she married in around 1881 in Timaru NZ. I wish we had known when we were there.
Please can anyone help me I want to trace her marriage and birth of children. Her name was Emily Clark daughter of Phillip Clark & Emily Jones from Malmesbury England. She was born in Cheltenham Gloustershire, England 1856, She married Alfred Philip Cox about 1881.
They had 3 children Walter Henry Cox born 1884, Annie Elizabeth Cox born 1886 and Alfred Edward Cox born 1889 these dates are approx. There may have been a Richard as well

Looking for information on James Farquharson and Isabella Gordon. They were my great grandparents, they lived around Timauru and were farmers. They had 6 children, James, Annabelle, William, Jean, George and another daughter whose name we dont know. The children were born between 1872 and 1896. James died in 1926, he was retired and lived in Hull st, Oamaru when he died. James was born in Mortlach, 1840-41 and Isabella was born in Abelour,1854-55 both in Banffshire, Scotland. I've recently transcribed the diaries my grandfather kept during World War 1. The first diary dates from 13 November 1915 when he left Wellington, destination Egypt and ends on February 22nd 1916.
The second diary takes up his story on April 5th 1916 as he was preparing to leave Egypt bound from France, and ultimately The Somme. This diary ends on 25 November 1916, and was received by his parents in Waimate on 21 September 1917. It is documented that on 24 August 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery and devotion to duty during the attack on Bapume. He survived the war and was discharged with the rank of Corporal on 13 May 1919.
The copies of his service record (from the NZ Army) shows that on enlistment in 1915 he was assigned to C Company, 8th Reinforcements,Canterbury Infantry Regiment. On receipt of his Military Medal he is shown as Corporal, 1st Battation Canterbury Regiment.
I'm the first to admit that I am confused battalions, regiments and companies!!
My grandad's diaries do not describe the horrors he must have endured. However my partner and I (thank you Steve! ) have been doing extensive reading and research. In particular Steve has found on the internet an account by Lt-Col. C.H. Weston entitled "Three Years with the New Zealanders". Grandad's story and Lt Col Weston's overlap in many places and has given me a much wider view of the diaries.
However....the diaries end in November 1916. I wonder if there is anyone who has details of the involvement of South Canterbury men in World War 1 who could fill in some gaps as to their movements from that date, to Bapume in August 1918, to their eventual discharge in 1919.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

I am researching my Great-great Grandfather James Gammie.
I believe he arrived on 5th September 1864 on board the "Lancashere Witch" in Timaru. I believe he owned 50 acres at Pleasant Point when it was known as "Hodsock" He was a Blacksmith at "The Levels" and was Postmaster at Pleasant Point.His daughter, Margaret, was a governess at "The Levels" in 1881-86. She met my Great grandfather Richard Marfell and left the district to marry in the North Island. Can anyone help me with my research?

My GG Grandfather arrived in Waimate in 1879 along with his wife and 9 children. His brother James a buider, built the Waimate High School and the County Council Chambers. My Grandfather Alexander was also a builder and the Undertaker he married Blanche Lane had 4 children in Waimate and then moved to Dannevirke. He spent 6 years in the Waimate Rifles and I would love to hear from anyone who has any information about this military unit.

I am interested in finding any info on Richard Bruce Ward and Hannah Jane (nee Mc Pherson). Richard was born in Christchurch 12/07/1878, father William Richard and mother Elizabeth Ellen (nee Atkinson). Hannah was born in (? Mt Pleasant) Waimate on 25/07/1881 to Alexander and Elizabeth Frances (nee Cunningham). There were 3 children, Rita Johanna, Melville and Raymond. Hannah sold icecream from her back door and later on Melville helped her and they started off Ward's Icecream which I believe was the last privately owned factory. Any info on the factory, Wards or McPhersons would be wonderful.

My maternal ggrandparents Parish came out on the Cressy one of the 1st Four Ships, The Cadwalladers from Shropshire, Wolfe from Manchester and Savage from County Kerry. All settled in Canterbury.

I have relatives who lived in Geraldine, but cant find what happened to them after about 1930. I am trying to trace family of John Chapman FLEMING who was married to Gertrude May (nee Fisher). They lived in Geraldine in the 1920's where Chapman was a plumber. May died abt 1926, and I have reason to believe Chapman moved to Timaru some time after her death. They had three children that I know of Alan, Gertrude, and Winnifred (the two girls were born in Owaka).

I am trying to trace the family of Daniel Lindon, from Warwickshire, and Charlotte Allington who arrived on the Crusader arriving 31.12.1874. They 4 children on arrival, George, Edward, John, & Daniel Jnr. I believe they had another 4 children in the years following their arrival. My great grandmother, Alice LOUGH was twin sister to Lucy LOUGH who married Alfred DOBSON, at Sumner, 22 Feb 1858. Her elder sister was Mary Ann LOUGH who married Edward DOBSON in UK and then they both came out to NZ. Her brother Edwin Henry LOUGH, and her cousin Henry LOUGH and family also came.

I am interested, from anyone who may have information about Capt Caroline Frederick Scott MAUNDRELL - Captain of the barque 'Norman Morrison' died 1854 shortly after arrival in Lyttleton or his wife Elizabeth Constantia HORNBROOK. Also her brother William 1823 - 1882 & wife Margaret 1829 - 1912 HORNBROOK from the Arowhenua and Seadown properties Sth Canterbury. I am directly related to this family.

My gg grandfather was George HALL and settled in NZ in 1856 after arriving in Lyttleton with his two brothers Thomas and John. They bought land in Canterbury (as shown in your Run section), but you failed to mention that they were one of the original holders of the Balmoral Run. The HALL family were my father's maternal line - his paternal line MORTON came from Scotland to Southland in 1859 and settled in MORTON MAINS (named after my gggf) and SEAWARD DOWNS.

My NICHOLSON family arrived in 1878 and for short periods of time were in areas of South Canterbury before moving to Palmerston North, but when, I haven't been able to pin point a time line.

John & Robert Worthington were sent out to New Zealand with a guardian on the Derwentwater in 1861 to establish farms and to get away from a career in seafaring. They settled at Pleasant Point. Their father was a master mariner and in the 1830s Captain of Vessels and Trade at Port Louis. They had never done any work before coming to New Zealand for they always been looked after by servants so life was tough for them, especially when they were hard hit by the depression of the 1880s. John was very fond of riding and was noted for his dogs and horses.

I am descended from Hiram and Elizabeth Rawstorn, nee Ber(r)esford who emigrated from Stockport, Cheshire, by the barque Victory, arriving Timaru in Oct 1863. Hiram was the son of Joseph and Susannah, nee Clark.
I recently had the opportunity of visiting the area they came from, and found evidence of even older ancestors. Also met someone of the same (unusual) surname living there, although no connection has yet been made to them.
Look forward to hearing from anyone who may have this family name appearing in their family histories.

I am dead keen to hear from anyone who can help me trace descendents of Flora Campbell and William Ledgerwood, who came out to NZ from Drumraegh County Down and married in CHCH area 1871.The Ledgerwoods farmed at Highbank. I am visiting a lot of NZ sites to try to research my grandfathers family (FORSYTH). So far I have had no luck.I'm not even sure where South Canterbury is. My grandfather came from Rangiora. I did visit NZ in about 1977
staying in Christchurch. It certainly is a beautiful country.
