Budget Process
The Council received the Executive’s proposed budget on
September 21st. It is now in the hands of the Council and our analysts. Our analysts are scrutinizing every number for possible savings
and efficiencies.
The county budget process is simple: The Executive
presents his proposed budget to the County Council. The Council can pass the
budget as is, amend it, or rewrite its own budget.
Based
on the feedback I am receiving from our citizens, my top priority is public
safety. I have worked with our Sheriff, Ty Trenary, and will support funding
additional deputy sheriffs in the final Council budget. I will only vote for a
fiscally responsible budget for our residents!
There will be two public hearings on the budget:
October 25th at 10:30 am and 6:30 pm. The public is welcome to
comment on any and all aspects of the budget. The hearings will be held
in the council chambers on the 8th floor of the Snohomish County
Administration Bldg., 3000 Rockefeller, Everett, WA, 98201. You may also
submit comments in writing to this address or by email at Contact.Council@snoco.org. I look forward to hearing from you!
The Council is committed to working closely with the Executive and our other elected officials to develop a final budget. We are all
in this together and we are going to solve our problems together. We will come
up with the best possible outcome for Snohomish County within the financial
constraints of available funds.
We take great pride in our county fair and in all the
family friendly activities such as free entertainment at the courtyard state,
livestock shows and competition, equestrian, rodeo, arts and crafts, rides,
carnival, 4H presentations and competition, many food options (love those
scones!) and fun concerts with Christian singers King and Country, Kenny Loggins
(a very exciting concert!), country singer Josh Turner and others.
“2017 was another fantastic year for the Evergreen State
Fair with more than 325,000 happy fairgoers and several record breaking days of
attendance and revenues,” said Tom Teigen, Snohomish County Director of Parks.
“The Evergreen State Fair is a great family oriented event for our county.”
I could not agree more!
Our fair included a new “Morning of Dreams” event which
was a special early opening for people with special needs and their caregivers
so they could enjoy the fair experience in a calmer atmosphere. Vendors and exhibitors
agreed to open early to make this a truly special time for the paricipants.
There were 500 tickets available and every one was sold. Thank you to Brielle
Dodge for spearheading this great event.
Did you know:
- The fairground provides a home for the largest 4H
organization in our state with more than 7,000 members.
- Our fair is the first in the nation to move toward a goal
of zero waste, with 97 percent of the usual garbage being compostable and
recyclable. Greenest fair in the nation!
- The fair averages a net income of $800,000 per year.
These funds are re-invested in building renovations and improvements at the
fairgrounds.
Thank you to our
Parks and Recreation Deparment and our fair advisory board members: Vickie Andrew,
Marshia Armstrong, Chairman Don Ballard, Elaine Johannsen, vice-chair Tod
Johnson, Dani Kahn, Anne Lowe, Mark Mahnkey, Rick Merrill, Jerry Smith and
Kathleen Wright. Thank you for your dedication to make sure our fair was a success.
Information provided by Snohomish Health District
Residents and businesses in Snohomish County now have a simpler and safer way to participate in needle clean-up efforts. Free kits and needle disposal are available to residents and business owners cleaning up needles found in the community. The kits include a sharps container, puncture-resistant gloves, safety glasses, tongs, hand sanitizer and simple instructions for safe collection, and can be picked up from the Snohomish Health District at 3020 Rucker Avenue in Everett during normal business hours.
Used needles left in public and private places are both a nuisance and potential safety concern. Whether they’re used to inject medicines like insulin or for illegal drugs, used needles can spread diseases like Hepatitis C through accidental needle pokes. While the risk of contracting a disease from a needle-stick injury is very low, you can further reduce that risk by using the right equipment and procedures.
As a reminder, it is unlawful to dispose of needles in solid waste containers in Snohomish County. In addition to free clean-up kits, approved sharps containers can also be returned to the Health District’s Everett location during normal business hours. Please note that milk jugs, soda bottles and tin cans are not accepted sharps containers.
This program is intended for residents and business owners cleaning up used needles found in the community, not for businesses that generate used needles. Individuals using insulin shots or other similar uses should dispose of their used needles in sharps containers provided by local pharmacies or clinics.
