As of 2014, Creative had a long history of doing educational development work in the northern states of Nigeria with USAID and various state ministries of education. More than one million children had benefited from collaborative USAID-funded efforts to strengthen state and local capacity to deliver basic education services in literacy and numeracy and provide wraparound services to vulnerable populations. Yet despite this progress, the education sector in Nigeria remained fragile and was clouded by poverty, corruption and insecurity.
Informed by its previous work in the region, Creative led a consortium of partners to package and deliver the Nigeria Education Crisis Response through a replicable, community-based approach. This presentation outlines the core elements of that non-formal education model through a detailed exploration of: its target population; an adaptive management approach which influenced all aspects of project delivery; the critical partnerships from government agencies and departments down to the school and community level; and the integration of cross-cutting themes such as gender and psycho-social support (including wraparound services).
