Hi guys, do you remember Tyrian ? It was an a awesome vertical scrolling shooter in the middle of the nineties, probably the best one of its time for PC.

In the game there were multiple ships, tons of weapons, generators and shields.
I was remembering a number of similarities with Transcendence:
- Dual weapon system: front and rear (main and launcher for transcendence)
- Special Powers (domina powers)
- Sidekicks (autons)
- Upgradable items are nearly the same as transcendence: weapons, shields, generators.
- Weapons have 11 levels (10 levels currently used in transcendence, with known exceptions)

So I decided to start to create a Tyrian mod conversion, for my own enjoyment, and I started from the most difficult part, 3D modeling!
In the past few weeks I learned some and made a couple of models with UV mapping. They are low quality but it's my first approach to 3D.

So, anyone is Interested ? ANY help will be appreciated a lot ! :D

Currently I'm trying to do some 3D models, in 3DS format.
I'm planning to convert the ships first (the most difficult and slow part, probably), then the graphics for the weapons (missiles and mines).
Coding will come later.
The Tyrian resources are freely available I collected probably all of them on dedicated websites: I already have all the FX, music, and probably all the sprites of the game. (I extracted some of them by myself using a free tool)

Help wanted:
- Modelers ?
- Rederers ? If I provide the 3DS files and the textures, can someone render them to create the transcendence ship facings ? It seems that Wings 3D is not very good as a rendering tool, and I'm not in a good mood to learn Blender :).

[EDIT]

The Mod will have:
- ships (not all, probably 5-6 just to start)
- most of the weapons with new graphics for nearly all of them. (I'm planning 100+ weapons) Plenty of new weapon configurations also.
- 20+ autons
- a dozen of reactors and shields.

Code needed:
- new code for the autons, they need to switch on/off the shooting and always stick to the sides of the playership.
- probably some new station code, new function to upgrade the installed weapon (for example: uninstalling the Level 1 Banana Blaster and installing the Level 2 Banana Blaster)

I'd be interested if I wasn't so caught up in my own ridiculous project. I still haven't rendered a single Alcurean ship in 3d :(

i see you can get screenshots, you can use those to make the ship images without even rendering in 3d, use the ez image rotator.(direct download) it can't do 1x40, however, so it's for npc ships only.

EDIT: i am having problems with this leaving jagged edges(of slightly different shades of black) around the ship, but the mother image is flawed, even after fixing it, ms-paint cannot save a clean edge on a jpeg...

if you want it in 3d, i may be able to help with the rendering, but i fear the textures may be lost when i import the model.

given a model of a tyrian ship, i would render it to a transcendence ready image.

thanks for your help, bobby. it's really appreciated. :)

if I remember correctly you are using Blender for your ships, so I'm going to install it too (at least to test if my 3DS models + bmp textures are imported without problems)
Then maybe I'm going to slowly read a manual and learn how to use it. :?

My aim is to create only "top view decent looking models". that's what we need BTW.

The screenshot I did is an actual OpeGL rendering in Wings3D, however I cannot find (or it doesn't exist) a camera function in the software, so I'm rendering a windowed view, and the size of the window will give the size of the image :?

i just tried the ez image rotator again and got a good 20 facings uship, the thrust nozzels don't work right for some unknown reason. it seems the key to a good result is using a good image to rotate, png works well.

That's a cool image, thanks ! I placed an illumination from top left to each frame in transcendence style.

However I'm going to try also Blender, and see if this time it will be nice with me (and not making me incredibly angry like last time I tried it  )

Yeah, this project is not dead, it's just me that I'm slow at learning 3D modeling!

So now I'm modeling in Wings 3D and rendering in Bryce 5.5c (because its texture features and because it's the only 3D software in which I don't get lost with the buttons)

How the Talon looks like ?

ahah, a sneaky screenshot, showing a Supercarrot Foodship9 with banana blast and Heavy Guided Mines ! (the mines are shot behind the ship and they track enemy ships, like in Tyrian)

PS: It's just a screenshot, so there is no sound, but the Banana Blast has the original Tyrian sound effect ! 8)

planned work:
draw the nortshipz, the phoenix and the stalker
draw the missiles
draw most of the sideships (autons)

decide if i have to draw the bolts of the mega cannon or use the original graphic.

here is an example of the original graphic inside transcendence, the plasma storm:
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/8782 ... estng8.jpg
it doesn't look bad, but the style is different.

start coding most of the weapons using the new (or original graphic)

think where to put the code of the upgrading system for the weapons, (probably a station.)

I did not believe that there were very many users out there that remember that particular game. When I received my second computer, back in the middle nineties, "Tyrian" was onee of the firt games that I remeber playing.

Thus I am pleased with your desire to convert it into a Transcendence format. I would like to help, but am limited in my ability. I am learning better now how to create mods, and the *.xml code format has become much easier; however, I am still having great difficulty creating facings and rendering. I have the following programs at my disposal: DAZ 3D; Blender; Alibre 3D CAD; and Luminous. I can create only the basic images in Blender, do not understand how to utilize Luminous, and I cannot fiure out how to use DAZ effectively; Alibre will take some work to understand. However, I have only had these programs a few weeks, so I am still pretty new at rendering/creation of images.

That said, if you can use me, I would be honored to give you whatsoever help I can.

Hi Darth Saber,
thanks for your support ! :D You (and everybody) are very welcome to help me in any way !

Actually I'm trying to render projectiles right now, these are the original images extracted from Tyrian (rereleased from the actual Tyrian artist and free to use)

It will be a great help if you can make some of the symmetric round projectiles.
For the asymmetric ones, we need to do all the 20 facings, so I was planning to do only 2-3 just for the first release.

And to everybody interested, here are some updated images ! :D

The Stalker is in production...

one facing can be easily transformed into 20 facings with ez image rotater.

for the projectiles at least. i think you use 20 rows and 1 column.

well, i was thinking to prepare the mesh and then render each projectile, and render 1 or 20/40 times is the same. they don't have to be good looking, just brilliant.
In particular I really cannot figure out how to make some nice lightning bolts.

however yes, for simple things ez image rotator is good :D
