|
|
| posted on Friday, August 22, 2008
|
|
It was an unforgettable moment when, on September 15, 1987, he played
his guitar for Pope John Paul II in Los Angeles. Born without arms, he
performed a touching song entitled Never Be The Same. When the Pope
approached him from the stage to kiss him in appreciation, it seemed to
reflect the sentiments of the entire country.

| The Girl In The Window
|
|
| posted on Thursday, August 07, 2008

First he saw the girl's eyes: dark and wide, unfocused, unblinking. She wasn't looking at him so much as through him. She lay on a torn, moldy mattress on the floor. She was curled on her
side, long legs tucked into her emaciated chest. Her ribs and
collarbone jutted out; one skinny arm was slung over her face; her
black hair was matted, crawling with lice. Insect bites, rashes and
sores pocked her skin. Though she looked old enough to be in school,
she was naked -- except for a swollen diaper. "The pile of dirty diapers in that room must have been 4 feet high,"
the detective said. "The glass in the window had been broken, and that
child was just lying there, surrounded by her own excrement and bugs."

What would you do if you couldn't forget anything in your life? For
most of us, our memories fade as we age, and only the occasional song,
smell or photo will take us back to a particular time and place. But
for the woman formerly known to the world as simply "A.J.," her memory
is so powerful that it dominates her life. She sat down with ABC News'
Diane Sawyer recently to reveal herself publicly in the hopes that
others with unusual memories like hers will come forward and be studied.

| How David Blaine Held His Breath 17 Minutes
|
|
| posted on Monday, May 05, 2008
|
|
For most non-medical people, the term "apnea" is most familiar when
coupled with the word "sleep," and refers to a dangerous condition in
which people inadvertently stop breathing while asleep. But the word
literally means a temporary cessation of breathing and it is practiced
(on purpose) around the world by an international community of extreme
athletes -- a brotherhood that now includes magician and stuntman David
Blaine. On the set of The Oprah Winfrey Show on April 30, Blaine broke
the world record by holding his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds --
proving that just how temporary apnea can be is a question of training,
endurance and will.

She was 47 and dying from a disease called primary pulmonary
hypertension when, in 1988, she had a pioneering heartlung transplant
in America. She was given the organs of an 18-year-old boy who had been killed in a motorcycle accident near his home in Maine. Claire, a former professional dancer, then made an astonishing
discovery: she seemed to be acquiring the characteristics, and
cravings, of the donor.

| The Emergence of 'The Higher We'
|
|
| posted on Thursday, April 03, 2008
|
|
There are two discussions I wanted to be sure all of you had a chance
to listen to. Both conversations revolve around an emerging topic
called "The Higher We". Coined by Andrew Cohen, the term "The Higher
We" refers to what Cohen believes (and I agree) is the next stage of
our individual and collective development. It is "an experience of
shared consciousness that emerges when people come together beyond ego
and narcissism, and points to a radically new way to live and relate to
one another".
