Salary Grade: NC05 / Salary Range: $31,688 - $55,453
 
This posting is for a Transportation Worker II position in the Durham County Maintenance Unit.    Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.  Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform variety of other assigned duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of Basic Work Zone and Traffic Control
  • Experience in one of the following:  shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
  • Experience in the operation of at least 1 piece of the following equipment:  asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, or tractor “A” boom mower
Additional Expectations:

Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employees must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employees must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Positions are subject to emergency call back.  

Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. 

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement.   Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.  

 Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
