St. Paul's Church Newport Update--February 28, 2019

St. Paul's
Lent Begins With Ash Wednesday

With a bit of a later than usual Eastertide, the penitential season of Lent begins next Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday liturgies will be celebrated and ashes imposed at 12:05 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

This upcoming Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday.  What's often missed in the Gospel is the voice that says, "This is my Son, the one chosen, listen to him."  This announcement and command to listen implies that Jesus has something to say and something for you to hear and is speaking.

What is it that we need to hear this Lenten season?  What is it that is being said?  We will never know unless we slow down, maybe even stop, take time to simply be.  Slow down, simplify, and wait.

I look forward to seeing all of you very soon.

Shrove Tuesday Dinner on Tuesday

Our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner is Tuesday, March 5 beginning from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m in the Great Hall.  Cost is a donation of $10 for adults and children ages 4 to 10 at $5.  Come and enjoy pancakes (plain and special), sausage patties, applesauce, and drinks.  There is still time to volunteer before or after you eat.

This is always a special time of fun with friends, neighbors, and those in our community.

For more information and/or if you have not sent in a reservation, contact Dana Etter at [email protected] or phone 859-441-3397.
Deacon Tom Begins Sabbatical

Our Deacon, The Reverend Tom Runge, began a well deserved sabbatical about a week or so ago.  Many of you know that he has served St. Paul's for the last ten years and we are grateful for his continued service and also his desire to take care of himself spiritually, emotionally, and professionally.

During this time, you may hear some updates from him.  This is meant to be a time of rest, reflection, travel, and spending time with family.

Please do not contact Deacon Tom while he is away.  If you have a pastoral concern while he is away until mid May, contact the church office, Fr. Matt, or Mtr. Anisa.

Mostly, let us keep Deacon Tom in our prayers during this important time.
Guest Speaker After 10:30 Service This Sunday

You may recall that during this 175th anniversary year, we are highlighting all sorts of St. Paul's ministries and happenings.

This Sunday, after the 10:30 service, we will have a special guest speaker. Rachel DesRochers is the founder of the Incubator Kitchen Collective, a non-profit providing kitchen space, business support, and mentoring to food entrepreneurs.  Here at St. Paul's we have The Hatchery. She will talk about the history of the Hatchery as well as all the wonderful successes that have come out of it.

She will also be talking about the Good People Festival-Sunday Suppers. These are two upcoming music events that will be held here Sunday, March 24 and Sunday, June 2nd.

Hope you can stop by after church for some coffee, juice, light snacks and conversation. Look forward to seeing you.

Diocesan Convention This Saturday in Georgetown

Our annual Diocesan Convention is this Saturday, March 2 at Georgetown College's Conference Center.  The theme of this 123rd Diocesan Convention is Working Toward a Common Vision.  Please keep the St. Paul's deputation in your prayers.  They include Mtr. Anisa, Fr. Matt, Anne McBee, Stephanie Curliss, Leah Stidham, and Beth Bach.
Odds and Ends; Future Dates; Vestry Highlights

Do you like to play Euchre?  Join friends and others for some Euchre and pizza in the Great Hall on Friday, March 15 beginning at 6 p.m.  If interested email the church office at [email protected] so we can get the evening together.  You can also sign up on the sheet in the back of church.  Depending on how many people we have will determine our format and number of tables, etc.  If you have an item that could be given away as prizes for winning or door prizes, let the office or Fr. Matt know.

The big celebration of St. Paul's 175 anniversary will be Sunday, May 19 with a liturgy of celebration at both services, a visit from our Bishop, and local Newport officials with a city proclamation.  Dinner follows in the Great Hall.  We are hoping for an every member and friend in attendance Sunday including relatives, former members, and new friends.  Look for more to come.

St. Paul's is in great need of someone willing to oversee and manage our gardens on the west side of the campus.  If interested, please let Fr. Matt know.  This ministry will not be able to happen this year if no manager or managers are in place.

St. Paul's received $229.41 this quarter from the Community Rewards Program at Kroger and some additional money from the Amazon Smile Foundation.  If you have not and are able to designate your Kroger card to benefit St. Paul's, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your generosity.

At the Vestry Meeting on February 11, Fr. Matt appointed Bob Wolfzorn to serve as senior warden.  The Vestry elected Fred Gilliam to serve as junior warden.  Stephanie Curliss was elected as Vestry clerk.  We welcomed Dana Etter as she began a three year term on the Vestry.  Current members of the Vestry are Bob Wolfzorn, Fred Gilliam, Stephanie Curliss, Tim Troendle, Dana Etter, and Jim Adams.

The Vestry adopted the 2019 budget.  The budget and all financial reports are available in the church office for anyone interested.
