The present study investigated the impact of psychological detachment (PD) and support by the supervisor in form of feedback and reflection (FR) on emotional exhaustion in student teachers as a consequence of high workload during their internship. We used data of 212 student teachers, assessing the intended variables during an obligatory internship of 15 weeks. The analyses revealed that PD mediated the positive effects of workload on emotional exhaustion. FR moderated the relationship between workload and PD, such that the relationship was higher under low or moderate levels of FR. When FR was high, the effect of workload on PD was not significant. Results suggest especially PD to be a useful variable for fostering well-being, while FR can impair PD.
