For a city that is so thoroughly identified with the arts and letters, Paris on Google Earth has been sadly lacking pointers to the homes and hangouts of the artists and writers who made it the centre of the world up to and just after the turn of the last century.

This tour goes beyond the Louvre, the Opera and former royal palaces and shows a city being rebuilt by individual creativity even as it was being refashioned by Haussman. Hopefully, now, anyone walking its streets with GE as a guide will find much more than just the Metro stops.

While the addresses given are correct, the placemarks may be slightly astray. I'd love to hear from anyone who can correct any errors.

Two of the best sources of information on the Web regarding the Paris art world are the walking tours of Jack-Travel.com, BonjourParis.com and MetropoleParis.com.

There are a bunch of Hemingway stops on this post. Most of the information came from Michael Palin's tour for PBS and the Hemingway Resource Centre.

Above is "Homage to Friends from Montparnasse", a 1962 painting by Marie Vorobieff-Stebelska (1892-1984), a Russian cubist whose nickname was Marevna, after a fairy princess, reputedly bestowed on her by Maxim Gorky. It shows a caped Amedeo Modigliani surrounded by (top row from left) Diego Rivera, Ilya Ehrenburg, Chaim Soutine, Amedeo's wife Jeanne Hébuterne, Max Jacob, gallery owner Leopold Zborowski, (bottom row) Marevna, her and Rivera's daughter Marika and Moise Kisling.

EDIT JAN 21-07: Thanks to cosentino2007 for pointing out that I had the Hotel d’Angleterre on the wrong side of Rue Jacob. That placemark has strolled over to its proper spot.
EDIT MAY 31-08: And thanks to danpeaze for providing a more accurate location for Matisse's studio in rue de Sevres.
