Does it work with Ubuntu?

Nope. :-/ I got one of these because my laptop's integrated card does not work well with Linux. This little guy did not do any better. Searching internet and frittering away many hours trying things, I find that Ubuntu (12.04 anyway) still has pretty miserable support for wifi adapters. I've resorted to running an Ethernet cable to my desk, and booting to windows if I'm somewhere that I can't get a wired connection. There is probably some backport / build-your-own driver / NDISWrapper based solution, but I gave up.

Compatible with Vista and XP? Do any of these have more 'power' as far as distance from the modem?

Yes compatible with 7(x86,x64),Vista(x86,x64), XP(x86,x64). As far as power, they receive the signal very well with 3-5 bars through a two story building.

hey, does it function for a mac as well...?

Im not sure. I purchased it for windows 8.
