Investigators finger questionable culprit in Russian Pacific Fleet nuclear sub disaster
The death of 20 people aboard the Nerpa nuclear submarine, who were killed when the vessel’s fire suppression system was tripped during sea trials, is being blamed on a crew member who - according to a source close to the investigation - entered erroneous data into a temperature sensor.

Inspections of a reactor at Sweden’s Forsmark nuclear plant reveal that a quarter of its control rods are cracked
Sweden’s Vatenfall said that an inspection carried out on all control rods at its Forsmark 3 reactor revealed that 25 percent of the 197 control rods it inspected appeared to be cracked. Control rods are an essential element in controlling nuclear reaction in reactors.

Russia to nuke oil and gas fields in the Arctic
Bellona yesterday presented a new report on the projected use of nuclear energy in exploration of Russian oil and gas industry in the Arctic, a topic that has been heating the environmental community since Russian gas giant Gazprom began to drop hints about using nuclear energy to power its vast development scheme for the Shtokman oil and gas condensate field under the Barents Sea, and the nuclear industry offered up nuclear submarines and icebreakers for transport and drilling purposes.

PETERSBURG - Nikolai Kutin, head of the Russian Federal Service for Ecological, Technical and Nuclear Oversight (Rostekhnadzor) on Friday issued a decree codifying a method for nuclear oversight and assuring compliance with federal regulations for nuclear energy use, as well as setting licensing conditions for building nuclear energy installations.

It just so happened the other night that I had a dream – and I remembered it. It’s an extraordinary event, basically, because for the most part, either I don’t dream at all or I don’t remember what I’ve just dreamt about. Shortly after that, another event occurred, and a truly extraordinary one this time: A bunch of complete strangers chose our city – the city I was born in and where I live, and where my mother and my children live – they chose our city for nothing else than building a new nuclear power plant.

MOSCOW - In 2000 the Russian state organ for dealing with the environment was abolished, and late last month, the Ecological Committee of the Duma was scratched. They actually waited some time before closing the doors.

I know it may sound dubious, but the last time I attended an international summit was also in tropical East Asia, also in December (I did not get any tan then, though, and neither will I get it here in Bali). It was when the World Trade Organization (WTO) held its last ministerial conference in Hong Kong. But those are about the only apparent commonalities between the two summits.

As my muscles tense by my taxi’s slalom-driving on busy Bali roads on the way to my first UNFCCC climate summit, I am struck by the odd mix of vehicles on the road. Actually, I would go as far as saying that this mix epitomises the international climate debate between rich and poor.
