For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battle fleets cross the Daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the shining psychic manifestation of the Emperor’s will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard, the ever- vigilant Inquisition, and the Tech-Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name but a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants—and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of the thirsting gods.

Amongst your Chapter, there are few space marines as experienced and adept at fighting Xenos as you are. You have been summoned by the Captain of your company. Perhaps you were a member of the 3rd Battle Company in a codex chapter, recognized for a recent triumph against the Orks. Maybe you are a newly risen Devastator Marine, recently assigned to the 9th Company of your Chapter and distinguished yourself from among the new intake and showed unusual initiative for a new battle brother. Whatever your origin story, you’ve been summoned to fulfills your chapter’s centuries old pact with the Deathwatch and are being sent to serve for a tour. Welcome to Watch Station Erioch Space Marine. Welcome to the Deathwatch.

Characteristics, Fate Points, and Wounds: Roll them. If the characteristics you rolled up add up to lower than 90 then reroll them.
Exp: Starting 1k exp/Rank 1
Power Armour: You all start with Mk. 7 Aquila plate aka core PA and may only roll on the core rulebook for power armor history...unless you choose manmode.
Manmode: You have 2 options for manmode in this game

Option 1: You are guaranteed to have Mk. 6 Corvus armor or to roll for non Mk. 6/7 PA with all rolls on the armor table being ignored till I get you something else. PA History is decided by me via rolls and fudging of said rolls as I feel like it.
DRAWBACK: You were sent to the Deathwatch to atone for a failure. Your renown is capped at a maximum of 20 (Respected) until you wipe this stain from your honor in the eyes of the Emperor, your chapter, and the Deathwatch. You suffer a -10 situational penalty to fellowship tests with Deathwatch Marines who know of your failing (assuming they care), especially if they are members of your former chapter.

Option 2: You start with renown 20 (Respected) and were sent to the Deathwatch as an honor with the expectation that a hero such as yourself would come back to your Chapter to impart the knowledge you learn from your tour of duty.
DRAWBACK: Your original suit of armor was destroyed on the battlefield and the Chapter was unable to restore it in time for your transfer to the Deathwatch. The Deathwatch has provided you with a suit of Power Armour from the storage of the Watch Fortress Erioch. Adapting to it has been an issue since the armor is temperamental to say the least or otherwise shunned by the rest of your brothers for reasons best left unsaid. In addition to whatever suit of PA I roll for you, it will come with one of the following histories guaranteed based on a roll of 1d5.
#1 Pristine Condition, #2 Warp Taint, #3 Unknown Provenance, #4 Destroyed and Rebuilt, #5 Cannibalised

Manmode #2: Mk.5 Suit with Unknown Provenance and Pristine Condition

7/26: I'm going to heavily revise this bio, keeping the same overall story but with some work put for brevity and to better get the character across.

Brother Ariel woke to the bright lights and antiseptic smells of the Apothecarion, getting up against the constraints of thick gauze and was greeted by the sight of his captain, Master Issachar of the Guardians of the Covenant’s Ravenwing company.
“Congratulations, Ariel. You brought a traitor to justice. You should be proud.”
“What happened, sir? I remember cornering the heretic, activating my homing beacon to summon the Deathwing, and then…I’m here. How was I wounded?”
Issachar pointed upwards, “Deathwing arrived just in time and apprehended the fiend, but, one of them materialized directly on top of you. The medical serfs have had to largely rebuild your spinal column, but it’s nothing you couldn’t handle. It’s been three weeks, an they say that with another few weeks of training you’ll be back in fighting shape.” He he began to move towards the exit.
“Wait! Sir, before you go, may I make an observation? It is about the Chaos Marine we apprehended.” The captain turned back to full face Ariel, his gaze intensified, but said nothing.
“His armor. between its spikes blasphemous sigils, was an inscription I couldn’t read, but it was Dark Angel cipher. It was slightly different from our current version, but it was was in the Alphabet of lost Caliban. I’m sure of it. What could this mean? Was he…”
The captain closed his eyes for long time time. Then smiled ever so slightly.
“…It would be in my power right now to order a medium-term mind-cleanse for you. Or kill you, if I was especially paranoid. But it would be a sin to waste a good battle brother like this. So tell you what? We’ve agreed to provide Deathwatch with a battle brother, on a Watch Fortress all the way out in the Eastern Fringe. The Grand Master wants The Guardians of the Covenant to earn some honors and glory on the opposite end of the galaxy; it would be especially agreeable if we could establish our good name in the minds and annals of other Astartes chapters. We are often obscurely thought of as “the nerdy Dark Angel successors,” and that is if we are thought of at all.

“So Ariel, I’m volunteering you for Deathwatch, to serve as the Emperor’s weapon and our Chapter’s ambassador, separated from your brothers. This is not exile. This is not penance. I just don’t want you around here with incomplete information. If and when you return, we can talk about your future stature in the chapter.”

“Yes sir, thank you, sir.
—————
Ariel passed the few months of void travel in meditation, study, and helping the bridge crew by illuminating their void charts and empyrean atlases with decorative void whales and warp beasts in the margins. When he finally arrived at Watch Fortress Erioch, he was wearing nought but his chapter’s signature red robes and was quickly sent to get a spare suit of armor so he could be formally sworn in for his Deathwatch service. Walking alone down a musty corridor of the armory, passing many incredible suits suits of armor, he stopped at a positively immaculate suit of black Mk. 5 “Heresy” armor. It’s every surface was surface undented, it’s molecular bonding studs perfectly rounded, and it’s glossy black paint practically gleaming despite the coat of dust. But what caught Ariel’s attention was it’s chestplate. Underneath a winged sword design, In the same archaic Dark Angel script he’d seen on his last mission, it was engraved: “LEGIO 1: COHORT 13: CENTURIA 3 ‘LUTHER’S HOMEBOYS.’”

Ariel devised a plan. He snuck into the clerk’s office, and with a few deft dabs of ink obliterated the mysterious suit’s listing in the inventory in/out manifest. Now nobody would ask for it back or notice it’s absence. When his vigil was over, he’d take this armor home with him to Mortikah VII, where it could be examined by the Interrogator-Chaplains and deemed worthy of continued service, or destroyed as a stain on their honor.

But that would all have wait. What mattered now was to join a kill-team, purge some xenos scum, score some accolades. For the glory of the Guardians of the Covenant and of Lion El’Jonson, he would show these East Rim clowns and philistines how things are done in the Segmentum Pacificus.

(I was planning to use my 20 requisition points to get a heavy or storm bolter anyhow, and am open to retooling my crunch for the Ravenwing advanced specialty, since it's already part of my backstory and merely isn't fully represented mechanically (though that is part of Initiate of Secrets).)

Pyriel Tsavo

Ymgarl. 2 years of Genestealers in the dark. Death and killing all around you. Chameleonic xenos swarming up for your flesh, and you know that your brother in front of you is depending on you to watch his back, just like you must depend on the brother behind to watch yours. That's where my life truly began. Every day I give thanks that I was there. War is an anvil, adversity is a hammer; by these we are forged. I can say without ego that Ymgarl forged me into a fine blade indeed.

In there, they had all the advantages. They knew the terrain. You had no choice but to step into their ideal range; no cutting them down with bolters from outside the reach of those scything talons. They quickly learned to prioritize the brothers who carried flamers. Every genestealer you saw could be your last. One slip, one mistake, and you'd be dead before you even realized there was a claw through your hearts. The Tyranids disgust me beyond measure, but even I must admire how perfectly their creatures are formed for the art of killing. Much like we Astartes, but forged by an alien and vile mind. So how did we win? Why do I hold these perfect killers in such contempt? Because, we are more than perfect killing machines, and they are not. This is their downfall.

They live to feed and kill. We live for a higher purpose. We are the Salamanders, the Emperor's 18th Legion, forged in fire by the wisdom of Primarch Vulkan. We are to be a shining example to all humanity of the perfection to which all should aspire. Our cause is just, our way is right. Every brother who falls sells his life in service to the highest of ideals. Every genestealer sold its life only for the sake of alien hunger. And the same goes for all xenos: they strive for imperfect aims, and thus their lives and deaths are wasted. Our weapons, our armor, our bodies: these are our tools. Our faith is our weapon.

I can't speak for my reputation, but I know it precedes me. I've heard myself called a hero; I wouldn't say that I am, but perhaps that is the nature of heroism. It began with a push, deep into Ymgarl's hives, in the last days of the campaign. They were getting desperate; as any hunter knows, the beast is most dangerous when cornered. The brother at the head of our column was a Terminator of 1st Company, a Firedrake. The Terminators were better equipped to slaughter the xenos trapped in the tunnels ahead of our advance, and it was our duty as the rearguard to defend the Terminator's vulnerable flank. I was directly behind him when he emerged into a wider chamber. He didn't even have time to warn us before the Broodlord dropped from above, impaled him through the head and began dragging his body away. I charged after him, roaring in defiance, ready to meet my end fighting this vile xenos horror, when I stopped short. The chamber was crawling with them, and more were entering in a constant stream. But that wouldn't have stopped me. No, what quenched my blind wrath was hearing the cry from the back of our column. They were surging down the tunnels behind us as well. With no other choice, we charged together into the wider chamber to maximize our firepower in both directions.

I do not know how long we were there. It felt like hours, but I know it couldn't have been more than 10 minutes. I lost sight of the Broodlord in the chaos, crouching over the Terminator's corpse, seeming pleased with itself. They came in numbers unseen since the earliest days of the invasion, when they were confident that they could swamp us in bodies. Now, it was working. Corpses piled high. Bolters ran dry, one by one, followed by bolt pistols. Chainswords hacked through so many bodies that their teeth began to strip and break. We began to be picked off, one by one. Then, one of the horrors jammed a claw into my power pack before a brother cut it off my back. My auto-senses flickered and died as my armor dropped into a low-power state. The world went dark all around me, and I heard the brother who saved me die. Something filled me, purer than rage. I felt total calm as I began to hack wildly at the darkness. At some point my hand found another chainsword. Blood splattered against me, bodies slammed into mine as they fell apart against my blades. Claws stabbed into my back, sliced across my arms, fumbled at my helmet. They could not stop me. At last, my chainsword choked on gore and was dragged away, stuck in a wounded xeno; the other was swatted from my hand by a strength far greater than the beasts I had been fighting. The Broodlord had deigned to come for me.

I cannot really tell you what happened then, in the dark. Pain. Screeching. I remember slamming my fists into its skull over and over, then finding eyes and jamming my thumbs as deep into them as I could. I remember it driving talons through my gut, carving away but unable to land a killing blow. Somehow one of those blades broke off in me, perhaps from its flailing, perhaps from my own. Somehow I got the idea that it was a sword in me, and not a fragment of xenos. Delusions from blood loss and intense stress, not uncommon, or so said the apothecary. But at the time, I was certain that I held a blade forged for me by Vulkan himself. I drove it through the thing's head. The screeching of xenos became panicked screams, and they retreated down the tunnels. At the time, I thought it was me they feared, but then the lights of reinforcements appeared.

They marveled at the wounds I'd survived. I didn't. As I said, this body is a tool. Faith is the weapon, and I wielded it that day. Once I could move, the Chapter Master called me in and told me that I was being sent to the Deathwatch. I felt... awed. To me, this is an honor beyond all others. To be sent to the Deathwatch is to be called a master xenos-killer. I will not shame my Chapter. I will be a living embodiment of what it means to be one of the Emperor's Avenging Angels. If I die here, alongside strange brothers and wearing strange armor, I will do it with honor.

I only worry that I may not fully become used to this new armor's eccentricities before I am called into combat. Every suit of power armor has a personality, but this one given to me by the Deathwatch feels... strange. Watchful, almost. Sometimes it feels like it vibrates with barely-concealed excitement, like it knows something I do not. It seems foolish to ascribe emotions to mere mechanical oddities, but something about this suit feels wrong to me. Perhaps I will ask after its history the next time it needs maintenance. A warrior must know his wargear inside and out, after all.

Liquid Dinosaur posted:

I will be apping as the guy I made for the Essergame, but only after I downgrade him and remove the termie armor etc.

Actually I'll be doing Manmode, but I'm not sure which man-mode is the "most manly." Is it the one where you've got cool Corvus armor and are disgraced, or the one where your chapter likes you but you've got completely random armor? What's even the "benefit" of manmode 2, you don't get more rank/renown points, and the drawback is you can't increase past 2 rank two at first.

Also in both of these you just choose your archetype and chapter yourself, sî?

If so I'll still copy over Zebulon Ariel, tactical marine of the Dark Angels. I'll change his backstory as appropriate depending on which mode I choose.

Ok so this is the intent between the two "manmodes": Number 1 gives you whats arguably the superior suit of power armour, the Mk.6 Corvus because it gives you a +10 to agility and has auto senses that are +15 at the relatively mild penalty of 9 AP to the chest as opposed to 10. It also has an additional armour history. It also unlocks the rest of the rites of battle armours if you'd like. You'd have the option to either get a Mk4, Mk5 or Mk8 suit on a 1d3 which have various social bonuses when dealing with other space marines. Your drawback is a -10 Situational modifier when dealing with other space marines and being unable to advance past the Respected tier until you deal with the causes of your disgrace. This will negatively impact requisitions, dealings with command, other space marines in the watch fortress, whatever.

Number 2 unlocks poo poo like Storm Bolters, Plasma Weapons, Melta Weapons, Lascannons, etc for your very first mission and gives you a head start to unlocking nicer bits of wargear immediately. You get a random suit of armor and the 5 potential results that are guaranteed were picked by me because they are of dubious benefit or affect the character negatively. Warp Taint for example "rewards" you +10 permanent corruption points for its bonus of +10 to Fear Tests. Pristine Condition is a +1 to AP to all locations until you take any damage or dirty in any significant way, like wading through a swamp. You then lose that benefit and get a -3 penalty to your initiative until you can repair and clean your armor. When are you not going to get dirty, when are you not going to be hit? Cannibalised means your armor is a patchwork suit and will be a hodgepodge of APs as does destroyed and rebuilt. Your armor could be stronger in some locations than the normal suit and it can also be weaker!

Whats the more "manly option" you ask? Who the gently caress cares pick one or the other or neither?

Yes you pick your archetype and chapter.

#acolyte GM of 2013

Raimbaud the Champion

My faith in the Emperor is shaken. Though I dare not say such, the thought is in my mind. If the Emperor was just, I would be dead now. My designation of Champion is now a farce. Once I was leader of a part of a crusading company. I was not one of the Emperor's champions, but I was a Templar of renown, having fought in many battles. That is why when we conquered the world of Scolla 808 I was left behind along with five squads to establish a keep and scour the world's human population for initiates to the Chapter.

Scolla was a primitive world of warrior clans and steel armored warriors, so the traditions of the Black Templar fit right in among the populace. the taking on of initiates and the training of neophytes bore resemblance to their practices of squiring warriors. They even built huge stone fortresses akin to our keeps, though much less technologically advanced. Things went good for a year, until the Necron came.

We should have listened to their stories about monsters who lived in the wastes that kidnapped people. Time and a gain history has shown that there is some truth to such stories. Instead we wrote it off as the stories that mothers tell their children so they don't wander off in the night. This was wrong. What we found out is that the Necron had an outpost in the great desert. Every so many years they descended upon the world and took members of the population. For what we still do not know; it is not a behavior known to the Necrons. Whatever the reason, they made their trip to Scolla 808, and this time found new specimens: Us.

We immediately put out word for support, but did not know how long it would take for reinforcements to arrive. So for three months we held out against the Necron, but it was no use. Their forces were not a invasion force and their numbers small, but they had the advantage in attrition. Every time a brother Templar fell we were down one man. Every time one of their Necron fell they would teleport away, only to be seen during the next assault. First Videric, then Munderic, and then our apothecary Athalaric; our numbers dwindled. No matter how good our defenses, how well I led the men, our losses compounded. Worse, they actually managed to take nearly a dozen of the marines, typically once they had been disabled enough. They would launch long protracted sieges that we would push back, and as soon as we did, they would strike with a lightening raid before we recovered, and carry one of use away.

Finally it was down to me and a few locals trying their best to use a power sword or bolter. I knew then next attack would be the last, and I would die, or be taken. I was denied that death, as our fleet arrived in orbit. realizing they were out-numbered the Necron retreated in their ship, with their prisoners, my brothers! When troops hit the ground, I got congratulated, and recognized for my last stand, but it was all a ruse. I knew what they were really all thinking:

You should have died with your men. Templar fight until their enemy is defeated, or they fall in battle, and you did neither.

I was shunned. Never given command of more Templars, I was kept on fleet duty. When the request for a deathwatch marine came I jumped at the chance, and the chapter was happy to be rid of me. It wasn't lost on anyone that these marines that the sector of space i was being sent was the same sector that Scolla 808 is in. I will use the watch to find those Necron, and find out what happened to my brothers.

Okay, haven't finished all my exp spending, since it depends on if I can do stuff. i like the idea of a Black Templar here for penance and revenge. So I have some requests needing GM approval.

1. I would like permission to purchase the Lone Survivor Deed from page 87 of Rites of battle. If I can, then I'll probably take normal armor, since I can't lead until 60 renown or recovering my fallen brothers, which is very similar to your man mode 1.
2. If not, I would request to be able to buy hatred (necrons) as an elite advance for 500 exp to fit with my backstory. If I can do that then I'll take manmode 1.
3. If you say no to both, then I guess I'll still take man mode one and just spend my remaining 600 exp as normal.

Raimburd you have Mk.8 Errant armor with the following history:.

Blood of a Battle-Brother: The blood of a squad-mate is upon this suit of power armour. Its wearer was standing
side by side with his comrade, but failed to save him. Perhaps there was nothing to be done, or perhaps the wearer was
negligent, distracted by his zeal for battle. Whatever the truth, the suit and its latest wearer make every effort to atone.
Add 1 to the Kill-team’s base Cohesion.

Zebulon gets a Mk.5 Suit with Unknown Provenance and Pristine Condition.

Brother Kheres Torias

“A young, ambitious Apothecary. Though his ideas about the relationship between iron and flesh are unusual to say the least, he burns with an unquenchable fire to demonstrate to every other Chapter that the Iron Hands are the unbreakable bulwark against the forces of Chaos.”

“Interesting beliefs for one who was on Contqual – and who by all accounts participated in the purge of exactly 33% of the remaining Imperial citizens.”

“We do what we must, Inquisitor. We of the Iron Hands know well what the taint of Chaos can do to a man. It can even infect him to the point where he will strike down a beloved brother. Brother Torias knows what must be done.”

“Still, I have to ask: How did he end up in the Apothecarium in a Chapter where Techmarines appear to be even more greatly valued than usual? I mean, since many of you are more iron than flesh, it seems to me that a Techmarine would make a better Apothecary.”

“You misunderstand. It is a common perception that, given our ties to the Adeptus Mechanicus, we hold Techmarines in the highest regard. While this is true to an extent, who is it that gives each initiate his new hand? The Apothecary. Who ministers to each battle brother as they lose their flesh? The Apothecary. Apothecaries not only safeguard the future of our chapter in our progenoids, but they build our future by performing the necessary surgeries that bring us closer to the Primarch. On the contrary, Apothecaries may be the most important brothers in our chapter. With that, let us be frank – in having him take the Apocryphon Oath, we are giving the Inquisition a mighty gift.”

“Yes, but how - or rather, why did he become an Apothecary?”

“It’s quite simple. He volunteered. As to the why, I leave that question to him.”

-Conversations between an Iron Father and Inquisitor Khell

To Brother Torias, the Xenos is not to be feared - the Xenos is to be carefully studied, dissected, understood, and ultimately dismissed in the face of the superiority of Mankind. An esteemed veteran of Contqual and a budding scholar on Tyranids, the Iron Hands allowed Brother Torias to take the Apocryphon Oath in order to further his study of Xenos so that he may return to them and upload his data to the innumerable banks of cogitators and the formidable minds of the Iron Fathers. This will help them better know how to calculate and counter the next fell blow that threatens to shake the Imperium apart. As with most Iron Hands, he is cold to many other Chapters, especially Salamanders, but none more so than the Ultramarines who are particular objects of scorn. To him, the Ultramarines only achieved the glory that they did because they never truly fought in the Heresy like many of the other Chapters, and as such were left relatively unscathed in the aftermath of the Battle of Terra.

Although his body is slowly embracing the conclusion that many Iron Hands before him reached - becoming more machine than man - Brother Torias still puzzles over something he terms 'The Mystery of Flesh'. Accepting the teachings of Kardan Stronos, despite hailing from Clan Raukaan, Torias believes that a combination of both man and machine fused as one, united towards a single purpose, can achieve far more together than either alone. Upon arriving at the Watch Fortress, Torias had to confess that his previous armor, having been purged at Contqual out of fear for any possible taint, could not make the journey. Though his new suit is temperamental to say the least, with even the slightest bit of dirt and grime clogging key servo-motors, the gauntlets of the armor fill him with pride. Said to have belonged to a suit of Mk. 4 armor that survived Istvaan, this knowledge steels his resolve and guides his hand so that no traitor escapes his reach alive.

As a note, due to his esteemed status in the Chapter and his value as an Apothecary, Brother Torias will enter play under the effects of MANMODE #2. Besides, Iron Hands should always have access to sweet-rear end gear.

Kheres gets Mk.6 Corvus with Pristine Condition and Gauntlets of Xirion:
This suit’s armoured gloves have been replaced with a unique pair of Mk4 gauntlets (with AP
7). They are said to have been worn by one of the Space Marines in the army that fought furthest away from Terra
than any other in history—the ultimate reach of the Imperium, now long lost to aliens and warp storms. There is some
disagreement among the Adeptus Astartes as to which Legion actually holds this honour, but it is good-natured for the
most part. Regardless, the wearer is filled with all the potential and valour of the Imperium Maxima. He gains a +10
Weapon Skill bonus, plus a +5 Fellowship bonus when dealing with anyone loyal to the Imperium of Man.

The Gauntlets are pretty much my favorite roll, since Mk 4. is awesome and the fluff for those gauntlets is even better. Totally worth the lower AP, especially because TFiW can mitigate that by a lot.

Scipio Stonehands

During the defense of Calarin Minor, when his position was being overwhelmed by a force of chaos demons, Lexicanium Scipio faced a choice to seek death in battle or fulfill his objective of escorting the civilian population, including the governor and his family off-world. Seeking to have his ork and kill it too, he refused to abandon his position, dispatching the rest of his brothers to the wider defense while holding the main breach alone for 3 days of constant combat. Fully expecting to give his life for victory, Scipio distinguished himself during this action by holding the mortal defenders together through sheer force of will and eventually banishing a total of 17 daemons. When the last transport was away, his squad returned to find their librarian collapsing onto the shoulders of the last of the imperial guard contingent -- after annihilating a charge by the enemy commander and his retinue, who were driven into a frenzy by his defiance of their poisonous sorcery. The guardsmen cheered their savior as "Stonehands", for the impossible manner in which he swatted aside the flaming swords of daemons and the whirring chainblade of the arch-heretic alike.

According to Guard records, the resultant 8-month counteroffensive was greatly helped by the ferocious infighting of the heretic contingent, who were unable to present a unified strategic front in their rush to sieze control of the remainder of the host.

With this and other accolades upon his shoulders, Scipio was selected for a tour of duty with the Deathwatch at the conclusion of the campaign. The librarian was unable to resupply due to his immediate redeployment, and on arrival watchstation armsmasters determined virtually all of his equipment to be a total loss. He has kept only the force blade bequeathed to him by his master at the conclusion of his training. While the new armor he has been issued is a magnificent example of the mk.8 series, the touch of warpfire leveled against the previous wearer still clings to it. Scipio intends to purify it through word and deed, and his commitment has only hardened his resolve.

Apothecary: LuiCypher as honored Iron Hands Brother Kheres Torias
Assault: Dachshundofdoom as honored Salamander Brother Pyriel Tsavo
Librarian: wiegieman as honored Imperial Fist Brother Scipio Stonehands
Tactical: Werix as disgraced Black Templar Brother Raimburd the "Champion"

If I was to extend to 5-6 players these are the slots I would consider in order of priority
Devastator: Medium Priority, the Tactical can slug a heavy bolter and fit the role if needed while commanding the squad.
Tech Marine: Low Priority, the Salamanders Assault Marine can serve as the kill-team armorer easy enough.

Advanced Specialties I'd be interested in particular
Kill-Marine
Ravenwing Veteran

Switchblade Switcharoo

Cadwgan remembered well the day his flesh finally failed him. He had been, as ad become common in recent years, manning the gun of one of Clan Raukaan's Predator tanks on one of the minor worlds of Contqual subsector when the vehicle was ambushed by a ragged band of cultists. Wielding missile launchers they could barely lift, the band got a single volley off before being purged, destroying Cadwgan's vehicle. Of all the crew aboard, only Cadwgan fell, only he had to be evacuated back to the battle barge to have both his fragile flesh and armour, armour that had been nearly destroyed by the tank's ammo rack detonating, repaired. It is a terrible thing, waking from the Sus-an trance only to be told that you had missed the battle, that while you slept your brothers fought and died closing a warp rift.

That those lowly cultists had accomplished what neither the Tau during the Damocles Crusade, when he had first been given the honor of carrying one of the clan's heavy weapons, nor the mechanical horrors of Bromoch, nor the World Eaters in Parathen had managed to accomplish... Cadwgan clenched his fist in rage.

But the Emperor had provided a means of redemption; The Deathwatch had called him to service, after his name was submitted so many years ago due to his actions on Bromoch. While he would never admit it, the honour of being called to service being much too great, he would have preferred to stay with his brothers, to make amends for having the ill-grace to be blown up just before the final climatic events of the purge.

As his shuttle made final approach to the watch station, Cadwgan put recent events out of his mind. It would hardly do to bring dishonour to Chapter and clan failing his duties in the Reach simply because he was annoyed by a twist of fate. The Deathwatch called, and he would answer.

#acolyte GM of 2013
I know you didn't request this, but I want to do impressions, so I am going to do so:

So my Watch begins. I have spent most of my time in prayer, but I have taken the liberty to read the dossiers on those who will form my kill-team. My thoughts follow:

Brother Torias, Iron Hands Apothecary: I am wary of this one. Based on his records he is very interested in studying the Xenos. While that make the Deathwatch the perfect assignment, I find study unnecessary; all one must do is kill the xenos. I also find it amusing that our Apothecary is an Iron Hand. I hope he isn't too eager to write off my limbs as a loss due to his Chapter's particular proclivities.

Cadwgan, Iron Hands Devastator: As if one Iron Hand was not enough we have two! By comparing his and Torias's datafiles they hail from the same clan and have fought in many of the same battles. This is good, as it brings to the group existing camaraderie that will hopefully infect the rest of us.

Pyriel Tsavo, Salamanders Assault Marine: I look forward to working with this one. While I think the Salamanders are often too soft when it comes to purging local populations, I have never worked with any of this chapter. Plus his file indicates he faced a broodlord in single combat with nothing more than a chainsword and lived. Not even many of our Sword Brethren could boast the same. I look forward to standing side by side with him while we carve down the enemies of the Emperor.

Ariel, Guardians of the Covenant Tactical Marine: Besides the fact that we are both not first founding chapters, this marine and I have nothing in common. Yes, we both share the designation of "tactical" marine, but that is more because the Deathwatch is trying to fit me in the limitations of their codex and their rules. His data file was rather limited, but that is no surprise from a descendant of the Dark Angels. Still, the aptitude tests give him high marks in leadership, which is good. I do not yet feel ready to carry the mantle of team leader, so let someone else do it.

Scipio Stonehands, Imperial Fist Librarian: As yes, of course our kill team would have a Librarian. While I have never worked with one, I don't share the out right disdain that the rest of my chapter does. From a pragmatic standpoint, for every good Librarian or astropath one thousand witches cause havoc in the imperium, so I'd rather all the witches be wiped out even if it means there would be no Librarians; but I'm not to go as far as to try and kill a Librarian in his sleep.

Plus there is the extreme irony that this Librarian is from the Imperial Fists, my chapter's progenitor chapter. He is closest to brethren here that I have. How far have the sons fallen from the father? Were he from any other first founding chapter I'd keep him at arms length, but given the connection there, I will try to be cordial. At least until the first time he pushes too hard and causes some sort of warp mishap. Then from there it will be nothing by condescension.

Since we have a devastator now, should I requisition a meltagun or plasma rifle instead of a storm bolter, for taking down big single targets? I'm trying to maximize my flexibility and tactical-ness.

Edit: VV good thinking. I'll get a Lascannon, some bolter upgrades, some alternate ammo, binoculars and a GPS to help with navigation, and an active camouflage tarp to hide the Rhino from enemies/us when we're trying to find it in a parking lot.

VVV Hmm, should I get a sniper rifle instead, or should I just have the lascannon and "snipe" with that? The stalker bolter is also silent for if we want to pick off a few people before going loud. The Lascannon can does 6d10+10 pen 10, but it needs to be braced, and while specific carry weight in this game doesn't matter, I feel like lugging around a a giant-rear end 70kg weapon with fat power cables going into an auxillery backpack-mounted battery as I just use a normal bolter most of the time is sort of pushing it.

Unless of course this campaign winds up being spent mostly in the tank and we're having a big Fury Road road war with the Warboss and the Ethereal, then sure we could just keep it in the back and the Devastator can shoot it too. But the Razorback already has pintle-mounted lascannons so I'm not sure anymore.

Edit again: Wait, wait. A camo-tarped Rhino could let us snipe an unsuspecting target target from out of the top or out the window then speed away.

Since we have a devastator now, should I requisition a meltagun or plasma rifle instead of a storm bolter, for taking down big single targets? I'm trying to maximize my flexibility and tactical-ness.plas

You aren't limited to basic weapons as a tactical. Tactical and indeed all space marines can use ALL THE GUNS. Have you considered a Lascannon?

I nominate myself for squad leader on the grounds that I am tied for highest fellowship, have Command, and while Raimbaud also has those those qualifications, he is probably not feeling up to lead the team right now since he's here as punishment. Once Raimbaud gets his groove back he can be squad leader if he wants.
Oh also I think it's a good idea if the squad leader isn't racist against psykers when there is a psyker in the party, at least on the first mission where they don't know each other well.

Also I'm going to build party cohesion. And make the Space Wolves pay for it.

All that poo poo except for the psykers racist stuff.

Since I'm like the only one without renown, I'm basically just going to juggle between bolter support on HVT, and aiding the assault and psyker in melee.

I'm like a half back.

Thanks for checking my post history! GenCon was cool, but apparently FFG declared that no one else could sell WH40K RPG materials at the con except them. Then they proceeded to only bring DH2e materials. This was sad, because it prevented me from acquiring hardback versions of anything good from Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, and Only War. It also saddened vendors, because they couldn't bring that stock to sell.

I'll try to make a really quick update tonight, but I won't make any promises. I'm hauling furniture from my in-laws back to our house in DC tomorrow, so at the latest I'll try to have an update Tuesday/Wednesday.

Have they fixed the problem of DH2.0 books being bound so shittily that a brand new, gingerly used copy will fall to pieces?

Yeah, they didn't even have any advertising for any 40k rpgs at their store. They were really pushing mansions of madness 2nd, weren't they? Though I didn't know about a 40k embargo.

I asked one of the FFG folks about the 40k rpgs while I demoed one of their like 5 Got games. Did not get a happy look.

I always get the feeling that the earlier 40K games or some kind of shame to them. I know for a fact there was more stuff they wanted to do with DH2e that they didn't manage to because of Grog revolt. They should just bite the bullet and use the new dice system that they made for the Star Wars RPG and for the third edition of WHFRP.

Also if it matters I vote for the Razorback. Flying vessel here is just asking to get shot down. I haven't really decided on oath yet; probably Astartes, I'd vote knowledge but that only gives us half of the targets on this mission.

I asked a bunch of vendors if they had any 40k RPG books in stock and more than one of them told me that FFG had a 40k RPG embargo in place. They also mentioned that they were going to raise a complaint next year because many people were going around asking after them, meaning that there was at least some demand for them.

It looked like Chimera broke embargo and had some of the books, but they were mostly the setting and adventure splatbooks. Nothing good like First Founding, Rites of Battle, or any of the Black Crusade Tomes.

It is known that RPGs are not easy cash cows and a lot of bigger companies are probably diverging away from them, Fantasy Flight included. I'd love to see a smaller RPG company like Pelgrane or even Chaosium (since the WH40k RPG system could arguably be considered somewhat derivative of the BRPG engine) take over the license and produce a 2nd edition.
