Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Silsden. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. Tuesday evening contest here at Edge Green Street against Squires Gate was an end to end affair and it is fair to say a great advert for the North West Counties League. Town dominated the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead when Daniel Hand turned home the rebound from a Colin Quirk free kick. This was quickly followed by the visitors levelling which sparked a spell of three goals in three minutes which saw “Tom” Butorins put Town back in the lead before the visitors restored parity again the following minute. Town were to go into the interval behind as a penalty saw the visitors take the lead. The second period saw the hosts draw level quickly after the restart when Andy Gillespie netted from an acute angle but after creating a handful of great chances a combination of poor finishing, desperate defending and some inspired goalkeeping Squires Gate managed to hold firm and a deflected free kick and a late penalty saw the visitors gain all three points and leap frog over Town in the process. Whilst Town were falling to defeat against Gate at Edge Green Street this afternoon’s visitors Silsden were not too far away also falling to defeat against Atherton LR which drew Town even more into the relegation mire. Whilst the result for Town was disappointing on Tuesday the performance was much improved and there were plenty of positives which we must take into this afternoon’s contest and if we do so they we must be a good bet to take at least a share of the spoils.

The visitors will be looking to gain revenge for their exit from the League Challenge Cup at the hands of Town earlier in the season and we will be looking to avenge the 3-0 reverse here at the end of last term. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto a good result. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . The club was originally formed as Squires Gate British Legion F.C. in 1948 and played in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. In Coronation year, 1953 the club changed its name to Squires Gate F.C. and won its first honour in the leagues Rawling Sheild. In the years that followed, the ‘Gate’ added to their silverware by securing the Division One title twice in 1956/56 and 1957/58 and also the Blackwell Cup in 1958/59 and 1959/60. The club joined the Flyde District League for one season only in 1960/61, winning the Flyde Cup and reaching the final of the Bannister Cup. In 1961 they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they played for 30 years. They were promoted from The West Lancashire League Division 2 as the Champions in 1981, but apart from that title win the Division 1 Richardson Cup win in 1986/87 was the clubs only major honour of that period. The club won the Division Two title again in 1987/88 and gained promotion back to the Leagues top flight. Squires Gate’s home ground School Lane adjoins former North West Counties outfit Blackpool Wren Rovers home Bruce Park. The two grounds were fashioned out of a corporate waste tip in the late 1950’s. Leased to the clubs in 1961, originally the clubs played on two adjacent pitches with nothing more than a rope separating them. Over the years the two grounds were segregated and developed into two North West Counties League standard grounds. The club have made steady progress since being elected to they North West Counties League Division Two for the 1991/92 season. The club ended that first season in 14th place after struggling to adapt to the step up in standard. The club won the NWCFL Fair Play award for the 1993/94 season and were losing finalists in the Division Two Trophy in 1997/98. Gate struggled at the wrong end of the second division for some years before a they just missed out on promotion with a third placed finish in the 1998-99 season. The club now boasts a licensed clubhouse and three seated stands. The millennium was celebrated with the erection of floodlights and the completion of the largest stand. They won the Division Two Trophy in 2001/2 beating Bacup Borough in an exciting final and won promotion to the First Division the season after finishing 3rd in the table and accepting the promotion place left vacant by Stand Athletic who withdrew from the league. Their first season in the top flight saw them finish in a very respectable12th position. 2005/6 saw the club finish in 14th position but it was their FA Vase exploits that the Gate fans will remind you of as they advanced from the 1st qualifying round al the way to the Quarter Finals where they went down 2-0 to Hillingdon Borough who were eventual beaten finalists. 2006/7 saw Gate have a mixed for start and manager Stuart Parker was sacked after an 8NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

. . . Silsden Football Clun 0 defeat by FC United and former manager Jed Starkey has returned to take up the reigns. The club finished the season in 18th position. Andy Clarkson took up the reigns for the start of 2007/8 season and Gate reaping the rewards of his stewardship as they finished in 6th position their highest ever league position in his first term in charge of the club. In recent years, Gate's real achievements have been in developing the Club itself. Some of the former players who moved to School Road in 1960 are still around, working in various capacities, most notably Brian Addison, who has progressed from player to Linesman, to Secretary, to Chairman, and eventually to the most important job of all: groundsman. Action from Town’s Once the pitch had been re-laid some ten years ago, Brian has League Cup win at Silsden gradually turned the pitch into one of the best in the League, and with the opening of the new changing rooms a couple of years later (named after one of the Club's great stalwarts, Wilf Carr,) the ground has become unrecognisable since those early days. The complete refurbishment of the Clubhouse in 2006, with air-conditioning added the following year, and now the upgrading of the floodlights, means that Squires Gate can be rightly proud of what they have created since those far-off days playing on "the tip". 2008/9 saw the coast outfit finish in a very respectable 10th position but Clarkson left the club at the end of the season to take up a position in the AFC Fylde coaching staff. Gate appointed Russ McKenna to the hot-seat with Mark Moretti as his assistant for the 2009/10 season. The new duo did a good job of consolidating the clubs position within the Premier Division as they steered the club to a 13th placed finish. Last term has seen the club build on that finish and were one of the surprise packages in the Premier Division finishing in 9th. A Word from the Manager . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for today’s north west counties premier league game against our friends from Yorkshire Silsden AFC, let’s hope everyone connected to their club have enjoyed a safe journey here and are treated to an entertaining game of football. Tuesday’s game against Squires Gate left me feeling that the gods are against us. We created enough chances to win ten games, scored three goals, hit the post, crossbar and watched in disbelief the Squires Gate goalkeeper pull off some tremendous saves. We then go and concede two penalties and an own goal, yes they had a few chances as well but many of them came with us chasing the game. I was disappointed with one or two attitudes in the dressing room after the game and a few harsh words were exchanged between players and staff, but to be fair the vast majority of the lads are up for the fight and will be here today trying to get some points on the board. We are not that far off being a really good side, but one thing we need to do is stick together and fight for each other, we’ve proved to everyone that we can play football we just need to start doing the ugly things now. Since our trip to Silsden in the league cup they have been on a good run of form, losing only in the last minute to Atherton LR on Tuesday night, we know how the long drive can take its toll on you so it will be up to us to take the game to them today and force our intentions on them from an early stage. The players have just got to start believing in themselves and we will turn that corner and a win today would help the cause no end. Finally, on the injury front, we are still without the services of Andy Ledger, Carl Addison, Iain Dyson, Dale Newbrook, Danny Clarke and Andy Olsen, but it’s no good moaning about it we need to get on with things and grind out one or two results. On another note Che Morgan and Anthony Hansard have left the club and I would like to take the opportunity of thanking them for their efforts over the last few months. Enjoy the game PS DVDs of the Everton game are available to buy for £5 if anyone is interested.

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our friends and rivals from Silsden AFC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have enjoyed a good journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. Tuesday night saw Town’s poor run of results continue as we went down 3-5 here at Edge Green Street to Squires Gate in an end-to-end encounter. The score line was far from a true reflection of the game as we dominated our visitors for significant periods of the game and created some great chances but in Neil Beesley the Gate ’keeper we found an inspired opponent as he pulled off a string of fine stops throughout the game. The woodwork was also on hand in keeping us at bay while at the other end we suffered two penalties, the first coming 20 or so seconds after the referee and his assistant had conspired to miss a blatant corner at the other end. The second penalty appeared generous as the Squires Gate player looked to have made a meal of things and in between we also scored an own goal! Never-the-less there were lots of positives to take from the game and on another night the score line could have been reversed. I understand we may have lost the services of a couple of players which is sometimes inevitable at this point in the season. On the plus side we can hopefully look forward to the return of four or five lads from injury to boost the squad (at some point soon) Congratulations to Colin Quirk who was voted the St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ following the Squires Gate game and Daniel Hand who was belatedly presented with his award for the Runcorn Town game (both are pictured opposite with Jim McBride and Andy Langley respectively). This afternoon’s visitors had, until Tuesday evening, been on a very good run of form having recorded successive wins against Winsford United (1-0), Squires Gate (3-0) and Ashton Athletic (0-2) followed by a 4-4 draw last Saturday against Runcorn Linnets. Their fine run came to an end at Atherton LR on Tuesday evening (compounding our loss against Squires Gate) when a last minute Gareth Grant goal gave the home side a vital win. Today’s two teams have already crossed swords this season with Town winning 0-1 in the League Challenge Cup 2nd Round at the ever-impressive NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

Asda Foundation Stadium late last month. It was a game that was switched to Silsden as both ourselves and ‘landlords’ Ashton Town had been drawn at home in competition. I’ve no doubt today’s encounter will be another tight affair. The bottom three or four places in the Premier Division have now tightened with wins in the last week or so for Stone, Atherton LR and AFC Liverpool. It means that having played four more games than each of the three clubs below us we have an advantage of one, four and six points respectively over them. Everyone at the club knows what we need to do and I am sure the lads will be giving as much as possible. A repeat of Tuesday’s effort, spirit and quality of play over our remaining games will surely see us clear of danger come next May. That said we should not underestimate the task ahead of us and we have a great deal of hard work to do over the next few months. Today is the fourth 100+ Club monthly draw of the season which provides much needed funds for the club. Many thanks to all those taking part, especially the players and staff. The draw will take place in the clubhouse after the game and anyone wanting to take part should see Andy Langley for further details (or see the advert in the centre pages of today’s programme). I mentioned last week that we have welcome on board Darryl Picton who joins Town to support our commercial and sponsorship activities. Darryl is currently on the look out for match and match ball sponsors as well as programme advertisers for the remainder of the campaign. Finally, give the lads your vocal encouragement and please join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ presentations. Week take a brief break from midweek games and next Saturday we travel to Padiham for the first of four planned away fixtures in December. Our only home game during this period will see us entertain Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday 13th December, kick off 7.45pm John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

St Helens Town v Squires Gate. . . Tuesday 22nd November 2011 North West Counties League, Premier Division St Helens Town 3-5 Squires Gate Town fell to defeat this evening in a see-saw game at Edge Green Street but the score line does not tell the story of a game which they dominated only to come across a goalkeeper in inspired form and some debatable decisions from the match officials which ultimately cost them at least a share of the spoils. Town in action v Squires Gate Photos courtesy of Albert Cooper

The opening half an hour of the contest was breathless stuff with both sides seemingly unable to defend and attacking at will. The hosts had an early chance when Colin Quirk sent a corner in from the right which found Andy Gillespie and his effort from the edge of the area was turned on by Andy Flood but Neil Beesley in the Gate goal held the effort. With less than a quarter of an hour on the clock the hosts took the lead Quirk struck a free kick from the 20 yards and it deflected through the wall towards Beesley the visiting stopper parried the effort but Daniel Hand was the first to react turning the loose ball home for his third goal in his last three starts. Town looked to press home their advantage with Quirk’s cross/shot evading all in the area before Gillespie linked with Artjoms Butorins with the latter firing an effort goalwards which Beesley did well to stop. More pressure saw Hand fire an effort goalwards and which the keeper parried and this time it was a defender who reacted quickest to clear the loose ball. The visitors rallied and levelled matters on 22 minutes when a corner from the right was only half cleared and Scott Harries was on hand to fire the loose ball home. This started a frenetic period of three goals in three minutes as Town regained the lead moments later when Michael Kavanagh did well down the right wing and sent the ball to the far post where Butorins collected it beating a defender before firing a shot which took a deflection and went past Beesley in the Squires Gate goal. Again there was a quick response as Gate restored parity when Harries latched onto a through ball and looked decidedly offside before

. . . Match Report and Photos advancing and firing the ball home. The teams appeared to take a well earned breather until the 40th minute with little goalmouth action of note. It was the hosts who almost took the lead for a third time when Gillespie had an effort parried from the right and it broke to Butorins whose effort was turned away by a defender. Moments later Quirk won the ball in the middle of the park and feed Gillespie on the left his cross picked out Kavanagh’s run on the front post and his deft touch looked to have turned the ball home but for a fine piece of defending which took the ball behind for what should have been a corner but the officials who were well placed had other ideas and the game was to turn on this disputed call. Immediately from the erroneously given goal kick the visitors went up the other end and were awarded a penalty kick for a challenge in the area which Louis Mayers converted to leave the hosts going into the interval behind and feeling aggrieved. Town drew level seven minutes after the restart when Gillespie chested a ball into the box down in his path before rounding the keeper and finding the net with the aid of the inside of the left hand upright from an acute angle. This revived the hosts and again they had some good chances to take the lead but Beesley was to deny them time and again. A dangerous free kick from Quirk into the area was headed away from Town skipper Michael Burns by Gate’s Daniel Monckton and from the resultant corner the keeper denied Butorins’ well executed overhead kick tipping the effort over the bar. Again the corner into the box caused danger and Burns looked to have headed the hosts into the lead but Beesley extended himself to push the ball which was heading into the top corner of the net. When the keeper was beaten the crossbar came to his aid. Butorins latched onto a ball from midfield on the left of the area and powered an effort past Beesley which smacked the crossbar and the loose ball was cleared. When your lucks out you can’t get a break and this proved to be the case a free kick on the left of the Town area saw the visitors take the lead. Christopher Bennett stepped up to send the free kick into the box and it appeared to be an easy take for Richard Cowderoy in the home goal but took a wicked deflection and found the net. Cowderoy was called into action a few minutes later when he had to react quickly to divert an effort from Harries away from goal and the loose ball was mopped up by a defender. With time beginning to be against the hosts they poured forward in an attempt to gain share of the spoils and a Quirk corner provoked a goalmouth scramble Gillespie’s initial effort was blocked and the ball broke to Butorins with the resultant shot being parried by Beesley and the loose ball being eventually cleared away to safety by the Gate defence. The visitors secured all three points with their second spot-kick off the contest on 82 minutes Mayers again getting the verdict from the spot and Town were left to rue missed chances in what was a much improved performance. Glyn Jones’ Programme Review . . . Blast from the past MARINE v ST. HELENS TOWN Lancs Combination, Division 1, Saturday 17th November 1951 As was customary in this period, with paper still in short supply, Marine published a single-sheet 4-page fold-over programme for the game in November 1951, Town’s first in the top flight following their promotion as Division 2 Champions in 1950/51. My copy is in poor condition, thanks to Royal Mail’s voracious sorting machine which tore it into two pieces but most of the printing is still legible if some of Marine’s team has been ripped apart. Town were struggling in the top division, losing this match 4-1, but that was better than Horwich RMI who, having been promoted alongside Town the previous season, lost 8-1 at home to Marine the week before. Wesley Bridge had scored 6 of those goals and he was leading scorer with 22 goals already. An advert for Barlow’s Supper Bar, 58 College Road, appeared on the front cover, together with one for the Blundellsands and Crosby Estate Office, local estate agents and auctioneers. Ashe & Nephew advertised spirits, wines and beers inside and another establishment seeking hungry patrons was the Clavier Café offering luncheons at 36 Crosby Road North, Waterloo. Waterloo and Crosby were obviously affluent areas then too, as Liverpool Savings Bank also advertised prominently, with 23 branches on Merseyside. Town were represented by: Booth, Haslam, Higgins, Doyle, Tilley, Heinekey, Garner, Tiani, Dillon, McCann and Bailey. On a level playing field CONGLETON TOWN v ST. HELENS TOWN NWCL Premier Division, Saturday, 1st October 2011 Congleton have, for many years, produced one of the best programmes in the NWCL and this season’s publication is no exception. Priced at only £1.20, it had a card cover, printed in full colour, with an idyllic scene from a local park on the front and a slot cut out to reveal the match details on page 3. Happily, there was no repeat of the error a couple of seasons ago which had Winsford United as the opposition instead of St. Helens Town! This issue ran to 48 pages, mostly printed on plain paper, but interspersed with glossy sheets featuring advertisements. The club obviously works hard to recruit advertisers, as there are a large number of local businesses featured on these pages. There were a number of pages of editorial and opinion, a wealth of statistics NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

Executive Programme Sponsors Season 20112011-12

. . . Programme Review continued including fixtures, results, teams and scorers, up to date league tables and some entertaining pen pictures of current players: for instance, the reader could discover that Joshua Bennett’s nickname was “Josh” and Jim Kelly was known to his team-mates as “Jimmy.” On a sad note, there was a valedictory piece from longserving club secretary Ken Mead who was retiring after 17 years in that position at the end of the game. We all wish him well. They’re in a different league CURZON ASHTON v WOODLEY SPORTS Doodson Sport Cup, 2nd Round, Monday, 14th November 2011 This was a Second Round league cup clash between two clubs who play in the Evo-Stik League One North, the level immediately above the NWCL Premier Division. Like fellow Tamesiders Hyde and Stalybridge Celtic, Curzon are blazing a trail at the top of their league and near neighbours Woodley lay in sixth place when the teams met at the Tameside Stadium earlier this month. Both clubs fielded slightly weakened teams and Woodley thoroughly deserved their 3-0 win, having dominated virtually the whole of the game, on a cold evening before just 65 spectators. It was, in fact, Curzon’s second defeat in the competition, having lost their First Round tie at Mossley, after which they were reinstated after Mossley were found to have fielded an ineligible player. The programme for the game, priced at £1.50, was the usual 56-page issue, printed on glossy paper throughout with a number of pages of advertising in full colour. There was a wealth of statistics, including detailed pen pictures and club histories for both sides, an informative and entertaining read for the neutral fan, together with match reports for first team, ladies and youth teams and a feature on the reserves. There were several articles of Non-League News from the Evo-Stik and Blue Square leagues, both of which are well represented in the Tameside area and, for a Monday fixture, I was pleased to note that all the results and league tables were up to date following the weekend games. One article in particular updated the reader on the progress of Guernsey FC, who are runaway leaders in their debut season in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Division One (Step 5). The article noted that top scorer Ross Allen, 31 goals, had netted nearly twice as many as the entire Feltham team, who the Channel Islanders beat 2-0 in their latest match. This was a very good production, the only negative point being the embarrassing mis-spelling of the sponsor’s name on the front cover. GLYN JONES

NWCF League News . . . Good News For Cotto League management committee member John Cotton got the news he had been waiting for this week - he has been given the all clear following his treatment over the past couple of years for cancer. It's been a long haul for Cotto, but he has always remained upbeat and positive throughout difficult times. "I said right at the start that I wouldn't let this beat me, and I was determined to fight it", he said. "It was great news to hear that I have been given the all clear and it just proves the saying together we can beat cancer. Two years ago, soon after I’d been diagnosed, my grandson Mitchell was asked what he wanted on his birthday, and he asked for two things - for Newcastle Town to win the league and me to get better. Not a bad double, I think I will ask him to do my lottery numbers from now on. I'd like to thank everyone for their good wishes and support while I've been having treatment, it has been really appreciated. Now I think it’s time for “The General” to make a full return to football – watch this space." Everyone has now been warned…… Maine Road…..There are still a number of replica away shirts available for purchase at the club, priced at £25. The shirts are sponsored by “Didsbury Blues” and are in the traditional Manchester City away kit style of red and black stripes with a round collar. There are large and extra large sizes available, and anyone interested in acquiring one should contact 07599 472598. Atherton Collieries……Colls Secretary Emil Anderson has pointed out that Joe Fielding deserves a mention for his scoring exploits against Holker Old Boys on 12th November. Prior to the game, Joe had scored just twice in 60 appearances for Colls, but turned the form book upside down by scoring four times in the opening 50 minutes of the against the Cumbrians. Padiham…..Young ball boy Adam Beattie showed his support for the club by sponsoring the match ball for the Storks’ FA Vase tie against Askern Villa, using the wages he had saved up from his ball boy duties. Secretary Alan Smith explained: “Adam’s dad made a donation to the club at our D-Day event against AFC Liverpool on 12th November, and he told me that Adam also wanted to help the club. I believe he had been putting the money he got for being a ball boy at our games to one side, and he decided to give it back to the club by sponsoring the match ball. It’s a great gesture by him and very much appreciated”. Glossop North End…..Press Officer Jonathan Haggart had a memorable day out travelling up to Billingham Town on Saturday for the Hillmens’ tie in the FA Vase. It wasn't just the rollercoaster nature of North End’s 4-2 victory - from two up to two all in the second half - that was out of the ordinary, but what he saw on the way to the game was certainly something he'd never seen before. Jonathan explains: “I'd come off the M60 to join the M62 and at the traffic lights I suddenly stopped a conversation dead, rubbed my eyes and said 'has that bloke in front got a parrot on his shoulder?'". “Sure enough, in the car in front of us, the driver had an exotic bird, that must have been at least a foot tall, let loose about his car, perching on the driver's clavicle. We sped up to catch it for a look, and I'm pleased I had passengers, as otherwise no-one would have believed me. I'm also glad I was stationary when I saw the parrot, as I might have crashed otherwise!" NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year
