Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Glossop North End. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Glossop North End to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. It has been a mixed bag of results since we were last here hosting Warrington Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup last Tuesday in a game where we took an early lead through Rob Hanley but then did not play well and as the game went into extra time with both teams matching each other it was a controversial decision for the second year running that cost the hosts a place in the second round. Saturday saw further cup action when we visited Colne in Vodakt League Cup action and a late goal for Graeme Mitchell ensured passage to the third round and an away tie against First Division Norton United who overcame Flixton after extra time. Tuesday evenings game at Maine Road saw Town continue what has been some poor recent form on Tuesday evening matches as we sank to a 5-0 defeat about which the least that is said the better. So on to this afternoon’s match against our visitors Glossop North End, the Hillmen had an awful start to the season and as Town were topping the table Glossop were near the foot and struggling to record results. Their form has been a lot better recently and Gary will know that the squad will need to improve today in order to gain a positive result and avenge the 6-0 reverse here last term. Congratulations must go to Ben Kay who will be presented with the Town Player Of The Month award for October after the match and will get to take his pick of the cars on offer at Johnson’s Toyota and enjoy it for a week as part of his prize. Finally welcome to the Town Juniors’ Under 7’s who will be taking part in a penalty shoot out at half time. Lets get behind the lads this evening and hopefully cheer them on to victory

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Glossop North End. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter! Our mixed bag of results have continued over the past week or so as we bowed out of the Liverpool Senior Cup to near neighbours Warrington Town after a dubious penalty late in extra time saw our visitors progress. Last Saturday the lads battled hard against a much improved Colne outfit and a single Graeme Mitchell goal with only five minutes remaining secured our progress in the Vodkat Challenge Cup. Town will now travel to Division One side Norton United sometime in the New Year. It was back down to earth with an almighty bump on Tuesday evening at Maine Road - a game that had originally been in some doubt because of heating and hot water problems at the ground, followed by some horrendous weather! What transpired was a 5-0 drubbing which left a sour taste for a few days. Gary will definitely be hoping for the lads to bounce back and put in a more determined effort against a Glossop side who admittedly didn’t start their league campaign the way they would have wished, but who have in recent weeks got back on track and will be hoping to make a push for promotion. With a free mid-week for the first time in a while our next game sees Town travel to Atherton LR next Saturday; less than twenty four hours later we make the journey to the Regional Athletics Stadium adjacent to the City of Manchester Stadium to take on a Manchester City Legends XI to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Bert Trautmann’s transfer from Town to City in October 1949. Tickets are available at today’s game (£4 Adults, £2 U16s and OAPs) and will also be available at the City ticket office throughout the week and on the day of the game. The club will be producing a commemorative programme for the game which we will hopefully have on sale at our next home game (as long as we don’t sell out!!) In Town Today . . . Glossop North End were founded in 1886 and began by playing friendly amateur matches. They played at a variety of grounds, including Pygrove, Silk Street, Water lane, and Cemetery Road before settling on North Road. The club joined the North Cheshire League in 1890, before moving to the Combination in 1894, becoming a professional club and introducing professional players. The club moved again to the Midland League in 1896 before being elected after their third application, to the Second Division of the Football League in 1898. The club won promotion in that first season, after finishing second to Manchester City, (and finishing above Newton Heath, who of course went on to become Manchester Utd). In the Summer of 1899, the club changed it’s name to Glossop FC. Sadly though, the glory didn’t last, as The Hillsmen were relegated after just the one season. They struggled to just 4 victories and finishing bottom, were relegated back to the Second Division. However they did manage a 1-0 victory at home to then Champions Aston Villa and beat another future European Champion side when they thrashed Nottingham Forest 3-0. In 1908/09, the club recorded their best FA Cup performance when they reached the quarter finals, before losing in a replay at Bristol City. However, the adventure had been financed by cotton magnate Samuel Hill-Wood, and with that industry in terminal decline (at least as far as Glossop and surrounding area was concerned) he upped sticks to London, investing his money in, and becoming chairman of Arsenal, who were elected to the top division from where they have never been relegated. Indeed his great grandson , Peter Hill-Wood is still chairman there. The club then struggled for several seasons (though it did manage it’s record attendance of 10,736 against former namesakes Preston North End in the FA Cup during the 1913-14 season), finishing bottom at the end of the 1914-15 season. With the onset of World War 1 the Football League closed down until the start of the 1919-20 season, by which time Glossop had dropped out of the League, and started the 1919-20 season in the Lancashire Combination, sharing a ground with Northern Nomads for several years. Although no longer in the illustrious big league, Glossop endured thanks to Oswald Partington MP; a former captain in the 1890’s, who reformed the club after the Great War. To this day Glossop are often cited as the smallest town in England to be home to a Football League top Division Club. After just one season, the club dropped out of the Lancashire combination and into the Manchester League of which they were champions in 1927/28, and also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions. Glossop again ceased playing during the Second World War and then rejoined the Manchester League. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949. In 1955 Glossop moved from their original League ground at North Road to the present ground; the ‘Arthur Goldthorpe Stadium’, better known as Surrey Street. Goldthorpe was a local Estate Agent who made a donation of £700 to build the stadium – over half the cost. A crowd of 2000 attended the official opening of the ground, and the improved facilities meant the club were accepted back into the Lancashire Combination. Since then they have played in the Lancashire Combination, the Manchester League and

In Town Today . . . the Cheshire League before becoming founder Members of the North West Counties League (in which they have remained since), when the Cheshire County League merged with the Lancashire combination. The Club almost went out of business in the 1990/91 season when the then Chairman sold the ground to the local Council and left the Club with huge debts thanks to criminal activity. The new Board of Directors took over in January 1991 and reconstituted the Club, reverting to the original North End name which had been abandoned back in 1898. (the name incidentally, was homage to Preston, who Samuel Hill-Wood had greatly admired). During the summer of 1992, floodlights were erected by volunteer supporters, with many of materials being donated by the local community in order that the ground could meet first division standards. In 1997 Glossop North End AFC won the Manchester Premier Cup under the guidance of Manager Syd White, beating Trafford FC at Old Trafford, and retained the title in 1998 with a 1-0 victory over Radcliffe Borough at Maine Road. When Chairman of the club in the 2000-01 season, Syd White stepped in temporarily following Mickey Boyle’s departure and again led the team to silverware, with the club winning the Derbyshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history, beating Glapwell in a two-legged final. Chris Nicholson was then appointed as manager in the summer of 2001 and instilled a superb spirit at the club again, following a few unsettled seasons, where final league positions were on a downward slide, and relegation battles had been faced before safety was secured. After two seasons, Chris had reversed this trend; the 2004/2005 season was the best for 7 years, finishing 13th, reaching a semi-final and producing the league’s highest scorer with 40 goals, Garry Kharas. Chris and assistant Steve Young introduced a number of young players from the successful league/cup winning reserve side of 2003-04 in the years that followed, and in 2006-2007 North Endhad their youngest squad for many years, and finished a creditable 9th in the NWCFL, the highest position achieved by Chris in his 6 seasons. When Nicholson announced his intention to step down at the end of the 2006/2007 season, due to his impending emigration to Australia, the club advertised the vacancy, and despite fierce competition for the job, Assistant Manager Steve Young was appointed for the start of the 2007/08 season. Steve’s appointment, along with that of his vital right hand man Terry Hincks, has seen on-field results improve dramatically, with the team finishing 7th and 5th in their two seasons at the helm.. The big day for the club in 2008/09 though was a terrific FA Vase run, which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. The club played in every round, from Preliminary onwards, leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way…none more dramatic than the 123d minute equalizer in the semi final against Chalfont St Peter. This led to a penalty shootout, in which the Hillmen seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way. Whilst the final saw a disappointing result – losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay – the run has awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town, and with promotion to the Unibond League a stated aim, and that friendly local rivalry with New Mills added to the mix, the 2009-10 season is the most eagerly anticipated since the Football League era.

Vodkat League News New Mills Look To Improve Their Facilities The opportunity to improve the facilities at New Mills AFC is being explored by Sports Solutions GB, a consultancy specialising in sports facility development projects. Sports Solutions GB has been appointed to investigate the feasibility of a proposal for New Mills AFC to become a Community Football Club, which would create new sports facilities for the local community. The team at Sports Solutions GB will investigate the potential for improving the existing facilities at the current ground, as well as opportunities for relocation to a new ground, building new community sports facilities and selling part of the existing ground for development. At this early stage, a feasibility study will be carried out to establish whether the proposed scheme is a viable project. It is increasingly important for sports clubs to become sustainable businesses in order for them to survive and grow, which is currently difficult for New Mills AFC which has an ageing artificial grass pitch and limited off-field facilities at its ground in Church Lane. The aim of the project is create a new community football hub comprising a 3rd Generation Artificial Grass Pitch, clubhouse with function and meeting rooms and associated changing facilities, for use by local schools, sports clubs, organisations and groups. Ray Coverley, Chairman of New Mills AFC, said: "This is the start of what we hope will be a very exciting time for the club. We're delighted to have the chance to investigate the opportunity for better sports facilities which would benefit the whole community. "New Mills as a whole is lacking in good quality, accessible sports and recreation facilities, and the football club is determined to fully investigate all of the options.

The team at Sports Solutions GB successfully delivered sustainable community sports facilities at Cirencester Town FC, which was Britain's first Community Football Club, and it is this experience which they will use to help New Mills AFC investigate all of the development options. Sports Solutions GB has now commenced work on the project and is currently carrying out a feasibility study, including full consultation with the local community, to ensure support should the project go ahead.

Around The Grounds Brantingham Road – Maine Road Once the very pleasant and plush surroundings of the Manchester County Football Association headquarters, Brantingham Road in Manchester’s ChorltonCum-Hardy district has seen rather a large fall from grace. The County FA have moved out to a new residence, the once lovely clubhouse has now become a space and cold place to be (and only serves 2 different alcoholic drinks in cans), and mother nature has taken its toll on the ground itself. A couple of years ago when strong storms hit the region, a whole stand was blown down here and never replaced. What remains is a covered stand with a few benches in it down one side of the pitch, although you are almost guaranteed to have your view obscured due to the number of posts holding up the roof, with a smaller covered standing area on the opposite stand. Behind the goal at the far end is an overgrown jungle of grass that is probably hiding some forms of wildlife, this has certainly seen little in the way of care as it hasn’t been that bad in previous visits. There is a canteen there selling decent pies and other refreshments, but this is really the only high point of a ground whose better days are well and truly behind it. If you are going to visit this ground then make sure you check the weather and hope to the almighty that it is going to be a dry day. Town History St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. Town History Brian Rigby. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-ofWar Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keepers jersey. Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty� was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause

He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

Vodkat League News Player Of The Month Awards For October THE VODKAT LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARDS PREMIER DIVISION - ANDY SENSALE OF RAMSBOTTOM UNITED Ramsbottom's displays throughout the month of October were terrific, with the team winning five and drawing one of their eight games as well as providing great entertainment - their eight matches produced 45 goals. The attacking flair has been epitomised by the displays of the all-running, never-say-die attitude of Andy Sensale, whose work rate and endeavour have seen him score eight times during the month. His infectious attitude has rubbed off on his team-mates and been well received by the Rams faithful followers. Eight goals in eight games is a superb record, but his overall displays thoroughly deserved this excellent return. DIVISION ONE - DAVID SWARBRICK OF HOLKER OLD BOYS David's pace makes him the scourge of First Division defences. He can play wide on either side of midfield and has a mandate to roam around the pitch making him difficult to mark. He was in prolific form during the month, scoring in all of the Old Boys' games and accumulating a total of six goals over the course of the month. He was also nominated as Man of the Match by opposition clubs three times during the month. THE SAMEDAY GOALKEEPER OF THE MONTH AWARDS GLOVES SPONSORED BY PAXSPORT PREMIER DIVISION - DANNY RHEAD OF NEWCASTLE TOWN Danny did not concede a goal in five league games during the month and only conceded one in the FA Vase. He made crucial saves in matches at important times - at 1-1 in the Vase game at Bartley Green, at Bootle three minutes from the end, and twice at 1-0 v St Helens to earn Town victory in these games. His handling has been first class and his ability in sweeping up behind the defence, together with his quick throw outs and kicks, have turned defence situations into many attacks. DIVISION ONE - ROBERT HACKNEY OF LEEK CSOB Robert played in 5 of 6 matches during October, and his form was a major reason that The Old Boys secured points against top teams Barnoldswick Town, Irlam and Stone Dominoes, the latter game seeing Robert produce a Man of the Match performance. His bravery, handling and his talking to his defenders, has been a major reason for his side's run of results and present League position, and his overall play has provided his defence and the whole team with a confidence that has allowed them to perform well during the month. Fan’s Eye View Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this afternoons Vodkat, North West Counties League match against Glossop North End. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. It’s been mixed fortunes since we were all last gathered here a week and a half ago, cup week brought both success and failure whilst the league campaign took another disappointing blow. The match against Warrington Town saw another first hurdle exit in the Liverpool Senior Cup competition after a heartbreaking goal late in extra time from a penalty that should have never been awarded in the first place. In my opinion it’s a tinpot trophy with no prize money for the winners, but to put 2 hours effort into a close game and have enough chances to win it in normal time to eventually come away with nothing is heartbreaking. Although the congregation of shirtless supporters from Warrington will have helped contribute to the club making a few pounds fixture. With Town now only remaining in one cup competition, the match against Colne was an important win with the lads just scraping through courtesy of a Graeme Mitchell goal in the 84th minute, though the forward was sent off moments afterwards for supposedly kicking the Colne goalkeeper in a tussle. Town then returned to league action last Tuesday against Maine Road and a below strength squad was humiliated 0-5 in a match where they would play so badly that at points it was painful to watch. The only real moment of controversy to mention was the denied penalty when Andy Gillespie was horrendously fouled by a Maine Road player and the referee somehow saw nothing wrong with it. Town will be hoping to bounce back after losing three league games on the bounce against this afternoon’s opposition Glossop North End. They hit the headlines last season for reaching the FA Vase final at Wembley Stadium where they were comprehensively beaten by Vase specialists Whitley Bay 2-0. Town had mixed results against the Derbyshire outfit last season when they sunk to an inevitable 0-6 defeat when the club were in the depths of despair and staring relegation in the face. However the away fixture at Surrey Street was a total reverse as a revitalised and by then safe Town defeated their hosts 3-1 on a fantastic night out in the foot of the hills. This afternoon will be another tough encounter and if Town are to hit their target of finishing in the top half of the table this season, they will have to start getting back to winning ways soon. Manager Bickerstaffe wasn’t handed much of a birthday present last week when Maine Road defeated Town, he will be hoping his players can give him a bleated gift this afternoon. Once again we ask that you get behind the players, cheer them on and let them know you are behind them. Let’s get back to winning ways today lads, stand tall and play proud, we’re right behind you!

Match Report Tuesday 3rd November: Vodkat League Premier Division Maine Road 5-0 St Helens Town St Helens Town continued their awful midweek form as they sank to their worst defeat of the season on a miserable night in Manchester. Early signs were not good as the hosts started at a high tempo and spurned an early opening when Steven Hibbert shot wide of the right hand upright when well placed. Maine Road broke the deadlock on 4 minutes when they attacked down the left and the ball eventually found it’s way to Liam Beckford on the far post who looked to be in an offside position as he poked the ball home but the effort was allowed to stand. Town dominated the next half an hour of action as they pressed forward to try and level matters. On the quarter of an hour mark Phil Mitchell collected the loose ball from an Andy Gillespie challenge advanced and shot just wide of the left hand upright from the right edge of the area. Gillespie then beat his marker and squared for Rob Hanley in a dangerous position but an excellent challenge from Josh Gittings averted the danger. On 22 minutes John Elias linked with Ben Kay on the edge of the box but his effort was deflected over the bar by defender Gittings. Further pressure saw Mitchell send a right wing corner into the box which Luke Faulkner rose highest to meet but could not hit the target. Mitchell was next to threaten as his speculative effort from the right of the area was parried and pushed back into play but just evaded Hanley centrally. Mike Scully did well on the left wing, cut inside and tried his luck, the shot was pushed away and Gillespie was just unable to gather the rebound. Scully was again in the action a few minutes later when he beat his man on the left and squared the ball into the 6 yard box but Gittings cleared the ball over the bar. A Town corner on 32 minutes almost saw the scores levelled when Mitchell turned a half clearance back into the box from the right and it broke to Mike Fargher 8 yards out his shot had Town fans celebrating as it ruffled the net but it had gone the wrong side of the upright and disappointment was quickly to follow the glee. A long range effort from Elias was parried by Andy Jones in the home goal before the hosts against the run of play almost doubled their advantage. Stephen Cheetham found space 20 yards out from the Town goal and his effort had the keeper beaten but struck the right hand post before rolling across the face of goal and being cleared. Town started the second half in a similar vein with plenty of possession but were to be rocked on 57 minutes when a right wing corner found Beckford on the far post and he applied the finish to make it 2-0. The poor night continued for the visitors on 62 minutes when Andy Gillespie got into to box and was scythed down by two defenders one from each side neither of whom got anywhere near the ball but the well placed referee surprisingly did not see any infringement. Hanley was next to be denied by the home stopper as his cushioned volley from an excellent free kick was pushed wide of the right hand post. With time running out Town showed a glimpse of the side they were 12 months ago, with heads going down and goals flying in as the latter stage of play saw Maine Road add three goals to their total. First Beckford delivered a cross from the right which evaded Woods and Hibbert headed home before Rob Brocklehurst’s speculative effort from the left beat Woods and found its way into the right hand corner of the net. Beckford rounded off an awful night for the visitors when he collected a through ball deep in added on time and shot home from the right of the area. Town will know they have to improve if they want to stay in the top half of the table as the season wears on and will be looking forward to the Tuesday evening games dropping off at the start of the next month as we have a poor record on Tuesday’s in comparison to weekend fixtures. In Other News...... Stamford Youngster to Return to Brazil Seth Burkett has been given the opportunity of a lifetime after an end of season tour with Stamford AFC Youth Team. The left back will travel to Brazil on November 15th to spend 6 months playing football for Sorriso Esporte Club. As part of his itinerary he will compete in the Copa Sao Paulo competing against teams such as Corinthians. He will also be given the chance to play in the senior team when the Campeonato Matogrossense state tournament begins in January. The 18 year old said, 'I cannot wait to go out to Brazil. The tournament with Stamford was unreal, a great experience with massive crowds, active media interest and quality football. It will be hard to adapt to the heat and language barrier, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. ’ `I can’t thank Anderson da Silva and Stamford AFC enough.' The opportunity came about through da Silva, who also arranged Stamford u18's end of season tour to Salvador. Seth, who recently completed A-Levels at Arthur Mellows Village College, has played for Stamford for the last 2 and a half seasons after youth team manager Guy Walton persuaded him to sign from Kettering Town. Seth's opportunity is just one of a number of exciting new developments at The Daniels. Seth made his first team debut for the Daniels against Carlton in September 2008 and has made twelve appearances to date in the senior ranks. He was also a regular member of the Lincolnshire County FA youth squad last season.
Race Leaves Hallam Hallam have announced the departure of first team manager Wilf Race. He informed the club of his intention to resign from his position with immediate effect after the 3-1 home defeat against Pickering Town on Saturday. The loss left the Sandygate side in the bottom three of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division. Race took over during the close season and faced a major rebuilding job after the departure of most of last season's squad. And, despite the club's lowly league position, they did enjoy some success in both the FA Cup and FA Vase this season. The club have placed on record their thanks for Race's efforts and wish him all the best for the future. Assistant manager Kenny Geelan, aided by Stuart Lowe, will be in charge for the foreseeable future. Geelan has previous management experience with Alfreton Town Reserves and Staveley.

All Our Yesterdays St. Helens Town AFC – Hall of Fame: John Connelly John Connelly began playing for St. Helens Town in 1956. Born John Michael Connelly at Clock Face on 18th July 1938, he was an apprentice joiner at Clock Face colliery and joined the club from St. Theresa’s FC, Sutton Manor, at the same time as John Quinn. Scouts from Burnley came to Hoghton Road in November 1956 to watch another player, but Connelly had an outstanding game and was immediately offered a trial at Turf Moor. He went on to make his debut against Leeds United at Elland Road on 11th March 1957. John went on to gain a regular first team place at Burnley in 1958/59 and the following season, won a Football League Championship medal at Turf Moor. Burnley were at the peak of the game in those days and played in the European Cup in 1960/61 and were beaten FA Cup finalists and Championship runners-up in 1961/62 season. A right winger blessed with great speed, he could also play on the left and was a prolific goal scorer, getting 20 in the 1959/60 Championship season from 34 games. In all, Connelly scored 105 goals in 265 Burnley appearances, before he was transferred for £56,000 in April 1964 to Manchester United, where he teamed up with former St. Helens Town prodigy Bill Foulkes. He won his second Championship medal at Old Trafford in the 1964/65 season. John scored 35 goals in 113 appearances with United before transferring to Blackburn Rovers for £40,000 at the start of the 1966/67 season, finishing his career with Bury in 1973. John Connelly was an England regular between 1959 and 1966, earning 20 caps and scoring 7 goals. He was also capped by the Football League. His international debut came against Wales in Cardiff on 17th October 1959 and he was a squad member in England’s 1962 and 1966 World Cup finals campaigns. Indeed, John played in England’s 1966 opener against Uruguay, but after a 0-0 draw, Alf Ramsey left him out for the remaining games. Belatedly, however, he was presented with his World Cup Winners medal by Gordon Brown in June this year. In retirement from football, John operated a successful fish and chip business with several outlets in Lancashire. He lives near Burnley, at Barrowford, but has two brothers who still reside at Clock Face. Saints Alive . . . A doctor in a small town is approached by the president of the local Women’s Institute, and asked to deliver a lecture on any subject of his choosing at a forthcoming meeting. Being interested in relationships, he suggests a talk on sex in modern society, but asks the president not to mention it to his wife as he knows she would be embarrassed by him addressing a totally female audience on such matters. “But your wife is a member of the WI and will probably attend the meeting,” she says. “We can get round that problem,” says the doctor. “She is going to London for the day next Tuesday, to meet an old friend, do some shopping, and see a show. She’ll be on her way at the crack of dawn and won’t be back home until well after midnight. If you plan the meeting for that day and don’t mention the subject of my lecture in your notices, she will never know.” The president agrees to this, and arrangements are soon finalised. The following Tuesday, the doctor rises to find his wife already up, and just about to set off for her day in London. At the front door, she kisses her husband goodbye, then looks back and says, “By the way, dear, I’m told you’re giving a lecture to the WI today. What subject are you covering?” Somewhat taken aback, the doctor thinks quickly and uses the first idea that comes into his head. “It’s about sailing,” he blurts out. His wife looks more than a little surprised but, not wanting to risk the chance of missing her train, she simply shrugs and continues on her way. Later that day, the doctor duly delivers his lecture to the WI and is congratulated on his contribution to an excellent afternoon. In the evening, he retires to bed well before his wife returns from her excursion, and rises bright and early the following morning. His wife treats herself to a couple of extra hours in bed and, by the time she emerges, the doctor has left the house for the weekly round of his patients. She consumes a hearty breakfast, then decides to do a little shopping. She hasn’t been out and about for long when she meets a smart woman of passing acquaintance, who stops her for a quick chat. “My dear, I did so enjoy your husband’s lecture at the WI yesterday,” says the woman, enthusiastically. “It was well constructed, informative, and entertaining”, she continues. “It is obvious he has a deep knowledge about the subject, and tremendous enthusiasm.” The doctor’s wife gives the woman the same surprised expression she had momentarily flashed toward her husband the previous morning. “Well, I’m absolutely amazed at that,” she says, unaware of the true subject of her husband’s lecture. “As far as I can recall he’s only ever done it twice. The first time he was sick, and the second time his hat blew off.”
