Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Bootle. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. This evening sees us in the middle of a run of there home matches after hosting Flixton here on Saturday and we have Winsford United visiting at the weekend when to be honest both clubs would rather be competing in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. It has been a disappointing and difficult period which continued on Saturday as we failed to perform for the third match in a row as we went down 5-0 here to Flixton. The visitors had a tremendous work ethic pressing and harrying the ball through out the contest and their speed on the attack caused Town problems for the duration of the match. This coupled with a spattering of below par performances in the Town line up saw us fall to our heaviest defeat of the season so far. This evening’s visitors Bootle fell to their first reverse of the season on their trip to the seaside on Saturday as Premier Division new boys AFC Blackpool secured a 1-0 victory over the Bucks. Town will know that they will have to improve if they are to secure any return from this evening’s contest. Bootle will be looking to challenge at the top end of the table this season after a disappointing start to last term saw them fail to build on their excellent return to the North West Counties League top flight • Restaurant for the 2009/10 season.

THE MILLHOUSE

Jimmy will be hoping that some of the squad who have been sidelined over the last couple of games for various reasons will be back in the fray this evening and hoping that some of the lads put the disappointment of Saturday behind them as we look to get out of the rut we find ourselves in at the moment. Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them onto victory. Enjoy the game. . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . The original Bootle Football Club was formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. In the season 1889/90, the club became a founder member of the Football Alliance and managed to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they lost to Blackburn Rovers. When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out of he league after one season, were replaced by neighbours Liverpool FC and seemingly, disappeared. Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic F.C. was formed. The team played in the Liverpool Leagues and, in 1948, were elected to the Lancashire Combination League Division 2 which they won at their first attempt. However, they struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons, withdrew and folded during the 1953/54 campaign. The current Bootle side were formed in 1953 as Langton FC, the side played at Edinburgh Park and dominated amateur football in the Liverpool area as members of the Liverpool Shipping League and subsequently the Liverpool County Combination until the mid seventies. The club was massively successful winning the County Combination on nine occasions, The Liverpool Challenge Cup three times, the Liverpool Amateur Cup three times and the George Mahon Cup six times. The club made the move to The Lancashire Combination in 1974 and finished a creditable third in their inaugural season. They followed this success but winning back to back championship in 1976 and 1977. Their final season in the Lancashire Combination saw them finish third again. In 1978 Bootle moved to Bucks Park the club joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which they won in their first season, and were promoted to the First Division. The “Bucks” spent three season in the First Division before in 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent the next ten season as a member of the First Division until disaster struck in 1992 and they were relegated to the Second Division. The rebuilt side bounced straight back finishing Runners-Up to regain their rightful pace in the top fight of the North West Counties League. In their first season back they finished in a creditable sixth place and won their first silverware for 15 years when winning the League’s Floodlit Trophy. With the onset of money entering into the equation on an even greater scale Bootle found it hard to survive and with the loss of some key personnel, were unfortunately, merely delaying the inevitable for couple of seasons. They were finally relegated into the Second Division after a four year stay. The team had finished the season in 12th place but were relegated after failing a ground grading. Bootle bounced back again at the first time of asking as they gained from Chadderton, Warrington Town and Darwen failing their ground grading and after a 7th placed finish were promoted. Their stay lasted just two season’s and after struggling in both terms they were relegated. Another two seasons passed before they were to be relegated again on ground grading and after the loss of Bucks Park they returned to the Liverpool County Combination. . . . Bootle Football Club A long and arduous trek then ensued to find a new home, whilst at the same time trying to keep the team functioning. Fifth & third place finishes whilst at the Dockers Club was promising and after a lot of hard work the club found themselves elected back in the North West Counties League in 2006. With the club now play housed at “New Bucks Park” in Vesty Road, Bootle. The first season back in the North West Counties League was one of consolidation and the team finished 10th in the 18 team division. They also re-entered the FA Vase for the first time in seven years but exited at the hands of Salford City. The 2007/8 season saw the club advance on all fronts with the club entering the FA Cup, again falling at the first hurdle in Manchester this time at Flixton. A run to the FA Vase 2nd round saw Bootle account for Padiham and AFC Emley before Winterton Rangers proved too strong for the Merseysiders. The cup runs continued as Bootle were runners up in both the Division 2 Trophy and the League Challenge Cup. In 2008/9 Bootle were crowned champions of the Division 1, beating Padiham into second place by seven points. An excellent FA Vase run saw them advance to the fourth round before being defeated by eventual winners Whitley Bay. 2009-10 saw the Bucks have a successful first term back in the top flight as they produced some good performances to secure a third placed finish in the Vodkat League, Premier Division. The side also did well in the various cup competitions with a run to the semi final of the Vodkat League, Challenge Cup, losing to eventual winners Abbey Hey. A Liverpool Senior Cup Quarter Final loss against Everton at home and reaching the FA Vase 4th Round bowing out to Norton & Stockton Ancients. Bootle started the 2010/11 season looking to build on the previous terms achievements season but after a poor start to the season plagued by injuries and inconsistent form their realistic chances of challenging the front runners was gone by the festive season and they did well to recover and finish in a respectable 6th position.

250 Up for Dyson . . . Club stalwart Iain Dyson ‘celebrated’ his 250th game for St Helens Town last Saturday and is pictured left with Town boss Jimmy McBride, General Manager of Johnsons Toyota Liverpool Gareth Shone and some of his family including son Luca pictured front in the yellow t-shirt (who plays for St Helens Town Juniors). Iain will now be targeting 100 goals for the club he currently stands on 88 in all competitions.

A word from the Dugout . . . Welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Premier Division game against Bootle FC Let's hope everyone connected to their club have enjoyed a safe journey getting here and enjoy the hospitality we have on offer. Saturdays result against Flixton came along without much warning, yes we had a number of players missing through injury, working, etc. But I expected us to put up a bit of a fight not roll over for them, especially once the third goal went in. The first half could easily have ended two a piece with us having a couple of chances we should have taken, but once the third goal went in we seemed to have lost all our energy and will to fight for the ball. The rest of the game became something of an embarresment and something I don't ever want to see at this club again. Back to tonight’s opponents, Bootle have made a good start to the season and are one of the favourites to take the title, although they did have a bit of a blip on Saturday losing 1-0 at AFC Blackpool. So like ourselves they will be looking to get back on track tonight. The lads owe the fans and more importantly themselves a performance tonight, so I will be looking for a positive response from the players and hopefully we can take something out of the game. See you Saturday when Winsford United will be our visitors for what will be another tough encounter.

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this final NWCFL Premier Division game of the opening month of the campaign against our friends and rivals from Bootle FC. Let’s hope their players, committee and supporters have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to today’s match officials Messrs. Hull, Direkler and Donohue along with tonight’s match sponsor Johnsons Toyota Liverpool and our match ball sponsor Artisan Ceramics. Saturday’s home rout by Flixton completed a dreadful week for Town as the lads suffered their heaviest defeat of the season. A couple of chances in each half fell to Town but it was pretty much one way traffic from the off as our visitors work rate, pressure and attacking speed saw us second best throughout. Jimmy McBride was without the services of Andy Ledger (injured), Jay Gardner (work) and Any Hansard (at a wedding) and early in the game lost Che Morgan to what looked like a nasty hamstring pull. Another negative was some of the bickering among the players - not what Jimmy, Andy or the supporters want to see. Iain Dyson celebrated (if that was possible) his 250th game for the club on Saturday and was presented with an embroidered shirt detailing his achievement prior to kick off (pictured opposite). Our main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool also presented Iain with a top of the range Toyota car for a week and a voucher for a hotel stay and evening meal. Our tough run continues with tonight’s visit of Bootle who themselves will have been disappointed with their 1-0 reverse at AFC Blackpool on Saturday - so with both teams hoping to put things right it should make for an entertaining encounter. Congratulations to our winners in the first of this season’s 100+ Club draws - Rob Smith (£130), Karl Brown (£60) and Jimmy Barratt (£20). If you’d like to take part in the September draw please see Andy Langley. A single entry will cost £5.00 per month for a chance to win one of three prizes up to £150.

Iain Dyson with Town manager Jimmy McBride & Johnsons Toyota Liverpool General Manager Gareth Shone

We’re still on the look out for sponsors, programme advertisers - please give me a call (details elsewhere in the programme) if you can assist the club in any way. Enjoy the game and please give the lads your vocal support and encouragement - see you back here on Saturday when Winsford United are the visitors in a re-arranged fixtures. Match Report & Photos . . . Saturday 27th August 2011 North West Counties League, Premier Division St Helens Town 0-5 Flixton Town stalwart Iain Dyson made his 250th appearance for the club but his occasion was ruined by a below par team performance against a lively Flixton outfit. The opening quarter of the contest was dominated by the visitors who used their excellent work rate and pace to cause the hosts plenty of problems. An early chance saw Brian Matthews deliver a corner from the left wing which Wayne Welbeck met on the front post but he could not steer his unmarked header on target as it went just over the bar. The deadlock was broken on 23 minutes when a move on the Flixton right saw the visitors afforded far too much space and time which resulted in Tom Bailey powering a drive home at the near post from 25 yards out. At the other end Town tried to bounce back when Leon Williams latched onto a defensive error which presented him with a one on one with James Jowsey in the Flixton goal he took his chance early but did not get hold of his shot and the keeper held his effort. Flixton extended their lead on 36 minutes when Matthews found space on the right after a swift move and his well struck effort was unstoppable finding the left hand corner of the net from the right of the box. Moments later at the opposite end when Karl Brown released Williams who again found himself one on one with Jowsey but the stopper again foiled the striker this time he stopped the effort with his trailing leg. The hosts were lucky to get into the interval just two goals behind as in injury time at the end of the half Welbeck drove into the box and got off a shot from close range which Dale Newbrook in the Town goal did well to keep out with a good reflex save. The second half saw the visitors dominance grow, Town had a lucky escape on 62 minutes when Ryan Marley tried his luck from 30 yards on the right the ball swerved viciously and Newbrook managed to adjust and parry the effort with the loose ball being cleared to safety. The reprieve was to be short lived as less than a minute later Matthews doubled his tally when he again found space on the left from where he fired home. The hosts almost pulled a goal back when a left wing corner was taken short to Peter Birch and he delivered into the box the dangerous cross was touched away by a defender with Dyson and Williams in attendance and broke toward Michael Burns on the far post but his header was off target. The closing stages of the contest saw the visitors add two more goals as Town went into self-destruct mode. The Jimmy McBride with Andy Flood first saw Bailey add his second and Flixton’s four after an error from Man of the Match v Flixton Newbrook presented him with a simple headed goal and rounded off the scoring when substitute Joshua Bowman collected a short headed backpass from Burns and he made no mistake firing the loose ball home to complete the rout. St Helens Town; Newbrook, Smith, Morgan (Birch 17), Glover, Flood, Burns, Frazer, Brown (Larner 70), Dyson (C) Williams (Roby 84), Addison. Subs Not Used; McKeegan, Fletcher. NWCF League News . . . A Pain in the Grass for Tommy On behalf of groundsmen everywhere, AFC Blackpool Chairman Tommy Baldwin is issuing an appeal to goalkeepers. After the usual close season graft in getting the pitch at The Mechanics ready for the start of the season, Tommy has been infuriated to see goalkeepers making marks on the pitch during the games played there so far. “During the close season we have worked very hard to maintain the facilities at our club and we strive to continually improve. This year, as all groundsmen have done, we have worked very hard on our pitch to ensure that the playing surface is good. I am sure that all groundsmen will agree that to see goalkeepers mark the areas on the six yard box and the eighteen yard box by scraping the grass off the surface is heartbreaking. These players will be the ones who complain that they have been beaten by a “bad bounce”. My response is no wonder, if they continue to dig up the pitches every time they go on them. Once the season starts, there is little growing weather left, so players have to give the groundsman a chance to give clubs pitches they can play decent football on. I have put notices on the changing room walls at our ground asking that this practice be stopped, but to no avail. If there is any groundsman out there who has beaten this practise, then could they let me know how they have done it, because I would love to hear from them. Goalkeepers must know that it is against the rules to mark goal areas in this way and that they can be reported to the referee and booked. I know match officials have a hard enough job to do, but if they could play their part in making sure the offenders are punished, I’m sure groundsmen everywhere would be very grateful. “All we are asking for is a bit of respect and sportsmanship to be shown, as I believe goalkeepers shouldn’t seek to gain an advantage by marking the goal areas in this way.” Lost History of Alsager Town Alsager Town are appealing to non-league football followers for assistance in building up the club archives once again, after many photographs and items of memorabilia were lost in the fire at the Wood Park Stadium last month. Town Press Officer John Shenton explained: “We lost a lot of items that we are looking to replace, and in particular we would like to hear from anyone who may have old team photos from the 80’s 90’s. If anyone does have any photographs that they think may be of use to us, we would be very grateful if they could either donate them or copy them for us, so that we can replace what was lost. Eventually we will have a new club house and it would be nice to have pictures from the past to hang there again.” Anyone who has items they believe would be of interest should contact John at the club. A Statement from the League Secretary It would appear that over the past week certain comments have been made on Club Forums concerning the attendance at the FA Cup tie played last Sunday between AFC Liverpool and Runcorn Linnets. In an effort to clear the matter up, the NWCFL were asked to investigate the allegations. We can now categorically state that the attendance was 299 made up of 276 paying spectators and 23 complimentary passes. The confusion was due to a mistake in the calculation of the ticket numbers. Both Clubs have accepted the findings, and I as League Secretary, am pleased the matter has been resolved. John Deal, Secretary, NWCFL NWCFL Premier Division Season 20102010-11 Programme of the Year

Glyn Jones’ Programme Review . . . Blast from the Past ST. HELENS TOWN v BOOTLE – Saturday, 13th October 1979 – F A Trophy 42 years ago, Town produced an 8-page programme, priced at 10p, for the visit of near neighbours Bootle in the FA’s premier non-league competition. The notes on page 3 reveal that it was Town’s first programme “after a long absence as we follow the general trend of Cheshire League clubs who have also striven to improve their programmes.” It was Bootle’s first season in the top division of the Cheshire League, whereas Town had played at that level since leaving the Lancashire Combination in 1975. The centre pages contained the team lines, surrounded by advertisements and page 6 listed the season’s fixtures. Among the advertisers were the St. Helens Star (then a free paper in its infancy), Burtonwood Brewery “Try one after the match in the Town Social Club”, Joe Pickavance haulage contractor, Albert Anslow building contractor, A. Hill Pets & Bird Centre and Helena House Co-op Travel Service. Town went on to win the game and secure a home tie against Burscough in the next round. On a level playing field ATHERTON LR v ST. HELENS TOWN – Tuesday, 9th August 2011 Town’s opening NW Counties league game of the season was marked with a 20-page black and white publication called the “Crilly Park Review” (sadly, no mention of Father Ted) priced at just £1. A lot of effort had gone into its production, for there was an in-depth review of previous league encounters between the clubs, a message from new manager Phil Priestley, a three-page feature on the Irn Bru Scottish Second Division, a match report from the previous weekend’s game at Silsden, pen pictures of Town’s current squad and a feature on six of Town’s past players, namely Bert Trautmann, newly-appointed Congleton boss Joe Paladino, Jack Arkwright, John Connelly, Dave Bamber and Ste Pennington, all with photographs. Obviously not commercially printed and with a lack of colour, this was nevertheless a good read and a distinct improvement on recent seasons’ efforts. At this level, with modest sales figures, it is hard to see how this programme could be improved upon without a substantial price increase. The game finished in a 0-0 stalemate, before a crowd of 67. They’re in a different league HYDE FC v HINCKLEY UNITED – Monday, 22nd August 2011 Playing at step 2 in the Blue Square Bet Conference North and with massive support from Manchester City, one might have expected a rather more lavish production for the £2 cover price. 52 pages, whilst appearing substantial, proved rather disappointing as the only colour and glossy paper was restricted entirely to the cover and another 22 pages of adverts. The remaining pages were printed on plain paper with only 5 small photographs, none of which were action shots or team pictures. There were some entertaining articles, not least an account of a rare trip to Colwyn Bay – Town won an FA Cup tie there only 2 years ago, since when Bay have won two successive promotions, each via the play-offs – a review of pies across the league (no longer of any interest to this correspondent) and an all-too-brief psychoanalysis of Jose Mourinho, who has seemingly now added eye gouging to his repertoire, should all other tricks fail. With a crowd of only 323 at this high level of non-league football, no doubt affected to some extent by United’s game on Sky TV, Hyde’s recent financial problems which nearly forced the club into closure two years ago are still evidently fresh in the mind despite support from the country’s richest club who now play their Reserve team games at Ewen Fields. At all levels these days, most clubs face a struggle to make ends meet and Hyde are no exception. Happily, though, these problems were put to one side as the Tigers roared to a magnificent 4-0 victory which took them clear at the top of the table.
