Ep. 240 - Staff Sergeant Aquilino Gonell

Ep. 240 - Staff Sergeant Aquilino Gonell

Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess.
On this our 240th episode our guest is Staff Sergeant Aquilino Gonell.
Staff Sergeant Aquilino Gonell is a Dominican immigrant, former U.S. Army soldier and Iraq War veteran. For 17 years, he was a United States Capitol Police officer and was one of four police officers who testified before the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 insurrection. He’s been featured on ABC, CBS, CNN, Telemundo, Univision and NPR, and in The New York Times, The Washington Post and El Diario. He is a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Citizens Medal.
The book he co-wrote with Susan Shapiro, “American Shield: The Immigrant Sergeant Who Defended Democracy,” was published Nov. 7 by Counterpoint Press.
A quick programming note: The interview section of this episode is about 40 minutes long, after which I'll come back to read a quick additional statement from Staff Sergeant Gonell. Then, for the last part of the episode, I'll be including Staff Sergeant Gonell's complete testimony before the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, which he delivered July 27, 2021.
After our conversation, I asked Staff Sergeant Gonell if he had any additional statements he wanted me to include in the episode. This is what he sent me:
“The book is not just about January 6. It’s about sacrifices and dedication to duty. I spent 23 years of my life as a public servant in the military and as a police officer, where I protected the country, at home and abroad, faithfully and honorably. I have overcome many obstacles, challenges and adversities. I thought I had it all figured out. Then January 6 happened. I lost my career, my health and my beliefs in American principles and values, creating a moral injury as well. I did what I signed up for and kept my oath. Yet, those same people I protected, the Republicans, tell me that what I lived through was not real or that it wasn't that bad.”
I want to quickly thank Staff Sergeant Gonell once more, along with the other United States Capitol Police officers who testified and continue to speak out.

The Rob Burgess Show

Thorough, detailed, but unhurried interviews...it's a pleasure to listen to a host who isn't rushing to responses, but rather allowing the interviews to elicit unexpected gems, though clever but objective questioning.

Live from the front lines of the Midwest is Rob Burgess. Send this man some love, and ammo—then give him your ear.

The Rob Burgess Show

Rob Burgess brings a disarming inquisitiveness along with an investigative journalist's dogged pursuit of the story to a wide range of topics, including (but not limited to) pop culture, film, the literary world, stand-up comedy, hip-hop, pop music, K-pop, rock & roll, American politics, elections, South Korean politics, the American zeitgeist (as broadly or narrowly defined as need be at any given time), the pharmaceutical industry, family farmers' issues, race relations, freedom of speech, journalism, regionalism, partisanship, parenthood, the state of policing in America, and even the best candies to eat or horror movies to watch during the Halloween season. In many cases, Bob brings a deep personal working knowledge to the issues he covers.

If you're like me, you've probably heard plenty of podcasts with a progressive bent from podcasters safely ensconced in New York City, Los Angeles, or other bastions of liberal thought and culture, and their podcasts may be great in their own right, but in Rob Burgess you find an educated and imminently reasonable voice coming out of the rural Midwest; a small town, red state, Bible-Belt liberal.

Full disclosure, it's been an honor for me to have been asked on The Rob Burgess Show numerous times, mostly to talk politics, Korea, and K-pop (roughly in that order), but I listen to every episode, even all the ones I'm not on, just as I would do if I'd never been a guest. Scoring interviews with big names straight out of the headlines, like Martin "PharmaBro" Shkreli and former-Baltimore-police-officer-turned-policing-reform-advocate Michael A. Woods Jr., each week I look forward eagerly, wondering who the next guess will be (unless it's me; then, I know!)

At any given moment, I just know that The Rob Burgess Show enjoys a smaller audience than it warrants. So if you're new to The Rob Burgess Show, or you haven't listened yet but find yourself intrigued (and, honestly, who wouldn't be?), take a look through the lengthy back-catalogue of episodes, find a guest or topic that tickles your fancy, click "Play", and just listen as the soothing sounds of Flamingosis's "Saturday Night Fever" wash over you and you embark on a conversation that is manifestly worth having.
