I don't really HAVE alternate interpretations of the charactesr, but I'll throw in another vote for the umbrella.

Primary interpretations count too. This is a situation in which sticking as close to canon as humanly possible is considered an alternate interpretation.

Orin and Okuu in a highschool Alternate Universe!

I figured I might as well outsource this one completely if I'm already drawing a picture for it and all. A picture that really gave me more trouble than it should have, but oh well. Hey, guess what! HAVE SOME MUSIC!

Oh, so I guess the next character's up? Alright then.

I think someone mentioned Kyouko back there, so Kyouko it is! Just give me a little to prepare!

We can't do Kyouko because the game's not out yet. What if she's the midboss for every other character in the game? What if she's the midboss to Shou and Byakuren, who make a surprise comeback as a tag-team combo? What if she asks you to mercy-kill mind controlled Murasa who is the Extra boss and her secret lover/alternate timeline self?

We can't know, thus our discussion would be flawed until the next round. And, well, I don't know if I could handle that, emotionally speaking. We have to patient here and not push things forward too fast. It's important for the girl to be ready for something special like an alternate character interpretation. Especially for her first time.

Plus, again, like I said, we tried "discuss a character right when the game comes out" with Hatate. It failed pretty hard. Why would we do any better before the game's even out?

Write-up:
The Japanese use a lot of umbrellas. You can buy extremely cheap ones at any street corner in case of an emergency. An umbrella comes and goes, and it goes especially quickly if the wind gets too strong. Or maybe the owner simply forgets it somewhere, having more important things in mind. And maybe no one picks it up again because the color does not appeal to them.

Once upon a time, there was such an umbrella. And when time and time again, it was ignored for what it was, the winds swept it far, far away, to the land over the rainbow. And there, it became a youkai. Kogasa was born.

As her backstory, Kogasa is either the most endearingly sad creature if you are an empathic person, and completely ridiculous if you are not. She owes her entire existence to the fact that she was forgotten and ignored, but she doesn't let that get to her. Kogasa's purpose in life is to scare and surprise people, and that is what she'll do! Even if she's horrible at actually being scary, she'll still do her best! And maybe, just maybe, she can make some actual friends that way... What do you mean, that's not how making friends works?

Needless to say, the fandom has latched on to Kogasa as the most "moe" character so far, and although she's facing a strong rival in that category now, it's quite clear after her third appearance over the course of two games that she's also captured the heart of the series' creator himself. Right now, she appears to live in the Myouren Temple cemetery... Has she also been accepted as part of the Myouren Crew? Has she finally gained real friends? And more importantly: Does her new locale mean that she can actually scare people now? The jury is still out on this one, but chances are better than ever.

Boo!

Relations:

  • Yoshika (the cemetery is not big enough for the two of them)
  • Sanae (?!)
  • Nue (???!)
  • the whole Byakuren crew (...!)

According to ZUN, graveyards are the sites of wacky hijinks far more often than they are of horror. So don't count on much scaring. But definitely wacky hijinks.

ACTUALLY

Official profile time!

A youkai umbrella that wanders around the sky above the temple. She found her place in the cemetery, and found herself living in the cemetery most of the time. This is because while humans that are rarely surprised in the middle of the road, they are easily scared when they are in the cemetery. You finally did it. Amazing.

This is ZUN's description of the stage theme though:

Cemeteries in games tend to act as stages for comic relief, rather than horror, in my mind. It's not like they have to be serious places. And so, I made this piece a little more comical than frightening. It's not very nostalgic (to me).

Overview: Kogasa is quite beloved by the fandom for one reason. She is the new Youkai moe. What does that mean. We find her to be more adorable than anyone else in the series. Generally speaking, we did back during the UFO days.

Power: To surprise people. She's done pretty good, what with that EX mid-boss thing. She moved the the graveyard to surprise people easier. Does that make her part of the UFO crew now. It is their graveyard. I guess it doesn't matter now. Yoshika's master and her scurvy band of pirates (I may have romanticized that) have taken over, and a friendly zombie is always much scarier than a frightening umbrella. Isn't it sad Kogasa? I think it's sad.

Danmaku:

1. Umbrellas, because she's an umbrella. So she uses umbrella danmaku. Yeah.

2. Spirals. NO OBVIOUS REFERENCES TO SPIRAL POWER.

3.Double rainbow all the way cross the sky, yeah, yeah, SO INTENSE! Shares with everyone's favorite Chinese guard, right? Wait do I have to specify Meiling now?

Music: A bit too cheerful to be epic, yet fun to listen to. One of my favorites as well, to be honest.

Well, that's not directly a description of the stage. But either way, I think the thing is that Kogasa does manage to legitimately scare people now! Except it's also hilarious to watch. For anyone but the scared party, that is.

Tatara~World Walker

An umbrella is meant to go places. Wherever there may be light drizzle or heavy downpour, an umbrella will travel. So, the umbrella youkai travels to all such places...and some places where rain will never fall. She is, after all, a surprise youkai. She can't be too predictable.

You'll find her in the Underground, trying to spook the drunken oni. You'll find her in the Netherworld, talking to real-life ghosts to improve her skills. You'll find her in the bushes next to the Moriya Shrine, plotting her next move against her green-haired nemesis. You'll find her on the Moon, stirring up trouble in the perfect kingdom. You'll find her in Mahoyiga, trying to out-surprise the gap hag. And failing.

Always plucky and never down, Kogasa travels the world, scaring humans and living life. Sure, she's currently found a home in the Myouren Cemetary, but it won't be long before the wanderlust strikes her again.

—-

This interpretation is mostly because of Zudak. In a certain Touhou RP, Zudak played Tatara as...well, as if she was competent as her job. Ridiculously competent. She had teleporting powers and could do or say anything in any way as long as it would be surprising. I took the elements that didn't put Tatara on the same level at Yukarin and applied them to regular Tatara.

So basically the same way people like to bullshit their way into their Chaotic Stupid characters in Dungeons and Dragons doing whatever they want. "I can do X because it would be unexpected, and therefore chaotic."

[up][up][up] never watched. all I know is it's an anime (which is in fact the priamry reason I haven't) and people consider it awesome. (Probably not on the level that Doctor Who has been recently, but... Still not enough to counteract he whole anime thing.)

anyway, I think Kogasa might have a home of her own (she could just "work" at the graveyard you're talking about. A youkai "working" WOULD be surprising, consideirng most get by on their abilities and nothing more.)
