Why this petition matters

Started by Rachel Stewart

This semester, Vol Dining has begun utilizing styrofoam boxes and cups to offer a to-go option in our dining halls.

All around campus, trash cans are overflowing with styrofoam waste which will never biodegrade amidst an ongoing climate crisis of epic proportions for our futures. Thousands of styrofoam boxes are used each and everyday by Vol Dining. However, many campus vendors like Panda Express and Canes already use compostable boxes for their to-go options on campus.

The tremendous amount of waste produced by the decision to use styrofoam in our dining halls comes into direct conflict with goals like the Zero Waste Commitment, signed by Chancellor Plowman last year, and Vol Dining’s spring 2020 move to utilize more compostable materials.

Vol Dining should move away from styrofoam and transition to compostable materials for its to-go options as soon as possible in order to further fulfill the university's Zero Waste Commitment.

Sign this petition to put pressure on Vol Dining and Aramark to utilize compostable to-go materials as soon as possible. Let's all work together to make this happen and make our campus a greener place. #SayNoToTheFoam #MakeOrangeGreen
