This action was initiated on the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, on whose land the University of Sydney also sits, and is endorsed by supporters located on the unceded lands of displaced peoples around Australia and the world. Through a recent report in the Sydney Morning Herald (6 May), we understand that the University of Sydney is undertaking a restructure of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences aimed at cost-savings, and that one proposal under consideration is to axe so-called “small” departments such as Theatre and Performance Studies.

As members of the Australian performance community, arts practitioners, fellow educators, and supporters of the arts, we, the undersigned, are shocked and dismayed to learn that this is an option even being considered. We strongly oppose this proposal as short-sighted and damaging to the University’s reputation as a leader in arts education globally and devastating for the performance community specifically.

One of the lead signatories to this letter, Wesley Enoch, recently wrote in The Conversation that “the arts, universities, public broadcasting and the relationship with First Nations people are at the frontier of the new and big ideas we need to embrace—and fund—to build an Australia we can be proud of.” To this, we add: Australia’s first university should be leading this mission. Indeed, the University of Sydney’s stated core values include “courage and creativity”, qualities that have been evident throughout the history of your Department of Theatre and Performance Studies.

Beginning in 1973 as the Theatre Workshop, growing into the Centre—now Department—of Theatre and Performance Studies in 1985, TaPS was one of the first programs of its kind worldwide, and a leader in the southern hemisphere. Over nearly four decades, the department has become a globally recognised centre for the study of performance, an eminent hub of interdisciplinary teaching and research, a training ground for many notable performance makers, producers, teachers and researchers, and a generator of community and industry partnerships. Today, the department is a stand-out in the Asia-Pacific region, drawing together students and professionals alike in a search to understand that most ephemeral experience: live performance.

Moreover, the department’s Rex Cramphorn Studio is an invaluable resource linking the University of Sydney to community impact and innovation. Since the studio opened in 1994, two thousand theatre and performance practitioners have been supported to make new Australian work and engage in creative research—so many of the key stages and arts festivals in Australia have housed productions seeded and developed in the Rex Studio, making it an important part of the pipeline for the Australian performance industry and demonstrating the University’s potential for far-reaching impact into the community. Through decades-long relationships with Performance Space, Griffin, Moogahlin Performing Arts, Belvoir, v1.0, Sydney Festival, PYT Fairfield, Sydney Front, Monkey Baa, de Quincey Co, the opera Project, Theatre Kantanka, Sydney Opera House, and countless individual artists, TaPS has helped to delight, challenge and entertain tens of thousands of audience members around Australia, from small children to our Elders.

We acknowledge that Australian universities currently find themselves in a challenging funding environment, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainty about its longer-term effects on future income.

Nevertheless, the University of Sydney is, by any measure, a very wealthy institution. It has many options for saving on costs other than the default strategy of simply excising departments like DTaPS or other, whole disciplines in arts, humanities and social sciences. Indeed, the savings from cutting DTaPS would be trivial compared to the value of what would be lost.

We therefore call on the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (Professor Annamarie Jagose), the Vice-Chancellor (Professor Stephen Garton) and the Chancellor of the University of Sydney (Belinda Hutchinson AC) to commit to retaining the discipline of Theatre and Performance Studies.

Anything less would amount to a failure of imagination, undermining the reputation of the University of Sydney as a nursery for art and culture.
