Morro Bay, on California's Central Coast, is famous for the massive rock formation that guards the mouth of its natural harbor. A remnant of an ancient volcanic plug, Morro Rock--in Spanish, el Moro, the sentinel--was spotted by explorer Juan Cabrillo as early as 1542. Once sacred to Native Americans, it is now a sanctuary for peregrine falcons and other birds, near secluded dunes, a 2,300-acre national estuary known as the back bay, and eucalyptus groves that are visited each winter by monarch butterflies. With the railroad hundreds of miles away, the small fishing town with sandy streets, surrounded by cattle and dairy ranches, once depended on the sea for transportation. Now a thriving commercial district serves both residents and tourists, and its waterfront is packed with busy seafood restaurants. Kayaks, canoes, and commercial fishing boats mingle in the sparkling waters of the bay.

More History from California The elite Hollywood regulars at Ciro's included some of the most popular names in entertainment at the time, such as Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, and many more. Hot Rodding in Santa Barbara County takes the reader back in time with a collection of remarkable photographs from the earliest days of the hot rod movement. The Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 is an unparalleled disaster in the history of San Francisco. More than 4.5 square miles of San Francisco burned and crumbled into a windswept desert of desolation. Human use of Joshua Tree National Park may extend as far back in time as 10,000 years. From the early Pinto Culture to modern tribes, native peoples have lived and hunted here for centuries. In 1857, Fort Bragg was an Army post on the Mendocino Indian Reservation. Coastal California north of San Francisco had been home to the Pomo and Yuki people for thousands of years. This book picks up the story during the time of WW II--a successful era for the studio--which was followed by a decade of decline due to the rise of TV. By the 1960s, the studio teetered on the brink of bankruptcy before rebounding.

Issued in May-June, 2006, "Morro Bay (Images of America)" by Roger Castle and Gary Ream for The Historical Society of Morro Bay, is a very welcome and important addition to the limited printed information available about the history of Morro Bay, CA, a California central coast treasure. This is a must-have volume for local residents and others interested in Morro Bay history, along with the earlier classic 1982 "Morro Bay's yesterdays: Vignettes of our city's lives & times" by Dorothy Gates and Jane Bailey. Both books provide extensive historical photos not available elsewhere. While most Morro Bay historical information that is online can be found from links from the historical tab of morro-bay.com at morro-bay.com/historical, the contents of these two books exceeds what is available online. Castle and Ream pack their 128 page "Morro Bay (Images of America)" with fully annotated photos on every page. The magic of print-on-demand pioneered by their publisher arcadiapublishing.com makes for an interesting intersection of modern technology with historical content. I wish the authors had used Photoshop photo enhancement more aggressively to bring out the contrast, brightness, and sharpness of the hundreds of photos painstakingly assembled in this wonderful collection. The amount of time and effort devoted to collecting and preparing these photo treasures must have been be extensive. Thanks to the authors and The Historical Society of Morro Bay for this essential addition to my library.

My friend absolutely loves Morro Bay and I gifted her with this book for Christmas. I read it before giving it to her and found it to be thorough and had great pictures of Morro Bay as it is now and how it was in yesteryear. If you love Morro Bay, I highly recommend this book.

Lots of good photos, but some are now outdated. It would be nice to have a new edition. Still, if you live in M.B., or just visit here, you should buy this book.

I found the book full of great pictures. Lots information that

helped put together some of the stories I had heard before. It left

me wanting to learn more about some of the other long time family's.

Hope someone will put together another book.
