Brandon Roy is most likely remembered for a potentially great NBA career that was unfortunately sidetracked by injuries. However, not a lot of people know that the Dallas Mavericks actually tried signing him in 2013.
Mavs owner Mark Cuban was interviewed during one of the team's pre-game practices by Fanatics View. He got usual questions concerning his two stars Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. Nonetheless, the question about Roy caught the Shark Tank star off-guard.
Cuban admitted that the Mavs tried to get Roy into the team. However, considering his skill set, he might have had to do some tweaks to his game.
“He could play, that’s for damn sure. It’s interesting because he wasn’t a great three-point shooter, so he would’ve had to learn how to become a better three-point shooter. But, he was so strong, he understood the game, knew how to get to spots, and could finish,” the Mavs owner furthered. “I know after he went to Minnesota for a little bit, and after that, we tried to get him. We said, let’s see if our doctors could do a better job than your doctors, and he just wasn’t ready for it.”
Roy has never played an entire NBA season due to the series of injuries he had to endure. These same injuries robbed him of the athleticism that made him a standout performer during his years at Washington.
However, that doesn't mean that Roy didn't hoop. He had solid career numbers, averaging 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists on 46 percent shooting. Everyone could see the potential he had, and it was unfortunate that his career is one of the biggest what-ifs in NBA history.
