About the author

Elisabeth Kendall is Senior Research Fellow in Arabic and Islamic studies at Pembroke College, University of Oxford. Her current research examines how militant jihadist groups exploit Arab cultures and local traditions. She spends significant time in the field, particularly in Yemen and Egypt. She is especially interested in jihadist propaganda; the political and emotive power of poetry; tribal representation and youth politics in Yemen; and the surge of cultural production inspired by the 'Arab spring'.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2010Very useful for anyone with a good basic knowledge of Arabic wanting to increase their useful vocabulary.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2008I have found this invaluable for understanding newspaper and television. I am still a beginner and this book allows me to find words that are just not in anything but the biggest dictionary. However, the lack of an index makes it very hard to navigate and I regularly have to thumb through it page-by-page, word-by-word, which is not ideal.
